We analyze how a larger presence of female evaluators affects committee decision-making using information on 100,000 applications to associate and full professorships in Italy and Spain. These applications were assessed by 8,000 randomly selected evaluators. A larger number of women in evaluation committees does not increase either the quantity or the quality of female candidates who qualify. Information from individual voting reports suggests that female evaluators are not significantly more favorable toward female candidates. At the same time, male evaluators become less favorable toward female candidates as soon as a female evaluator joins the committee

Required to implement methodologies for rehabilitation processes that fully solve the structural and functional pavement weaknesses and thus, provide service life again the pavement structure. This paper aims to socialize pavement rehabilitation technique Rubblizing, which consists of f the existing concrete slab to turn this into a high modulus granular base. In turn presents results for structural evaluation by FWD for a real project, in terms of AASHTO 1993 structural coefficien

Do gender quotas pass the test? Evidence from academic evaluations

Abstract This papers studies how the presence of women in academic committees affects the chances of success of male and female candidates. We use evidence from Italy, where candidates to Full and Associate Professor positions are required to qualify in a nation-wide evaluation known as Abilitazione Scientifica Nazionale. This evaluation was conducted between 2012 and 2014 in 184 academic disciplines and it attracted around 70,000 applications. In each field, committee members were selected from the pool of professors that had volunteered for the task using a random lottery. We estimate the causal effect of committees' gender composition on candidates' chances of success exploiting the existence of this system of random assignment. In a five-member committee, each additional female evaluator decreases by 2 percentage points the success rate of female candidates relative to male candidates. Information from 274,000 individual evaluation reports shows that, in mixed-gender committees, male and female evaluators are equally biased against female candidates, suggesting that the presence of women in the committee affects the voting behavior of male evaluators

    Diary thesis of Software Engineer

    No full text
The diary-based thesis explains, observes, and analyses the everyday responsibilities of a software engineer employed by a multinational software company. The thesis covers daily observation and weekly analysis entries covering eight weeks of work from September 11, 2023, to November 10, 2023. The entries include the everyday activities of a software engineer and a reflection on challenges and knowledge gained throughout the course of work. The introduction provides an overview of the author's background and role, the purpose and extent of the thesis, the diary's methodology and resources, and the thesis's practical and ethical considerations. The chapter also outlines the primary competencies and areas of improvement for the author over the course of the eight weeks. More information on the author's initial situations as a software engineer is provided in the description of the initial situation chapter. The chapter covers the current work and skills of the author, the stakeholders and interaction situations that the author faces, and the areas and skills that the author wants to develop for the future. The chapter gives a thorough summary of the author's experience and qualifications as a software engineer, as well as the background and environment in which the author works. The diary part of the thesis records the daily tasks that the author performs as a software engineer. It also analyses the tasks every week to identify the challenges, learnings, and improvements that the author experiences during the eight-week period. The diary part provides a detailed and reflective account of the author's work and skills as a software engineer. This discussion chapter describes the growth and accomplishments of the author as a software engineer throughout the eight-week observation period. The chapter compares the initial situation with the insights gained from the diary entries, highlighting the areas and skills that the author improved, the particular approaches and methodologies discovered, and the challenges and learnings that the author encountered. The chapter covers the technical and non-technical aspects of software engineering and concludes with the author's plans for continuous learning and improvement in the field of software engineering. This thesis might be useful for anyone who is interested in learning more about the everyday tasks, responsibilities, and challenges of a software engineer in a multinational software company. The thesis might be useful for aspiring or current software engineers who want to improve their professional performance and development, as well as for researchers or educators who want to understand the real-life aspects of software engineering

We provide an alternative explanation for this discontinuity. Using linked employer-employee data from Finland, we show that the discontinuity emerges as a result of equalization and convergence of earnings in coworking couples, and it is associated with an increase in the relative earnings of women, rather than a decrease as predicted by the norm.Peer reviewe
