South-Siberian mountain mires: Perspectives on a potentially vulnerable remote source of biodiversity
Changes in climate, land-use and pollution are having disproportionate impacts on ecosystems and biodiversity of arctic and mountain ecosystems. While these impacts are well-documented for many areas of the Arctic and alpine regions, some isolated and inaccessible mountain areas are poorly studied. Furthermore, even in well-studied regions, assessments of biodiversity and species to environmental change are biased towards vascular plants and cryptogams, particularly bryophytes are far less represented. This paper aims to document the environments of the remove and inaccessible Altai-Sayan mountain mires and particularly their bryofloras where threatened specias exist and species new to the regional flora are still being found. As these mountain mires are relatively inaccessible, changes in drivers of change ad their ecosystem and biodiversity impacts have not been monitored. However, the remoteness of the mires has so far protected them and their species. In this study, we describe the mires, their bryophyte species and the expected impacts of environmental stressors to bring attention to the urgency of documenting change and conserving these pristine ecosystems

[Genome-wide association study of testes development indicators in roosters (Gallus gallus L.)] Полногеномные ассоциативные исследования показателей развития семенников у петухов (Gallus gallus L.)
Reproductive ability is one of the main indicators of the male breeding value that depends primarily on the functional state of testes cells. Male fertility is defined by complex physiological processes affecting the formation of mature germ cells, i.e., spermatozoa in the process of spermatogenesis. The forming and accumulation of germ cells occur in the seminiferous tubules of the testes, therefore the gonad development can serve as an indicator characterizing spermatogenesis and the reproductive potential of males. A number of studies on farm animals, including poultry, have shown the genetic determinacy of this trait, with identification of respective single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) and genes determining the male gonad growth and development. In the present investigation, a genome-wide association study (GWAS) of the testes development parameters in roosters (Gallus gallus L.) of the F2 resource population were conducted. For the first time, new significant SNPs and candidate genes (р < 1.05½104) determining gonad growth and development in roosters were identified. The aim of the research was to seek SNPs and identify genes associated with testes growth parameters in roosters. The object of the study were F2 roosters from a model resource population (n = 115) that was obtained by interbreeding two breeds, Russian White and White Cornish. DNA was extracted from feather pulp using a commercial kit DNK Extran-2 (OOO NPF Sintol, Russia) in accordance with the manufacturer’s protocol. Genotyping was carried out using the medium-density Illumina Chicken 60K SNP iSelect BeadChip chip. At the age of 63 days, the experimental birds were slaughtered and the mass and morphometric indices of testes (length and thickness) were examined. Based on the obtained genotypic and phenotypic data, the GWAS analysis was performed in F2 resource population roosters using PLINK 1.9 software. The examined population was characterized by a high coefficient of variation in the measured indices, 96.1 % for the testes mass and 39.1 % for the linear measurements. The mass and linear measurements of the left testis were 5-14 % higher (р 0.05) compared to the right testis. The GWAS analysis revealed 36 significant SNPs (р < 1.05½104) associated with testes growth and development parameters in 63-day-old cockerels, in particular with the mass, length and thickness of the testes, 3, 26 and 7 SNPs, respectively. SNPs were localized on chromosomes GGA1, GGA3, GGA6, GGA7, GGA12, GGA15, and GGA18. A total of 156 genes were identified in the regions of the detected SNPs, including 16 genes that coincided with the positions of these SNPs. In particular, the latter were one gene (WNT7A) associated with the testis mass, 13 genes (LHFPL1, GALNT3, TMEM198, CACNA2D3, CCDC66, CACNA1D, DENND6A, CELSR3, WNT7A, IP6K2, ERC2, ABHD6, and DEPDC5) associated with the testis length, and three genes (ESR1, POLE, and RNFT2) associated with the testis thickness. These data can be used in genomic selection of roosters aimed at increasing their reproductive potential

The Perceived Impact of COVID-19 on Student Well-Being and the Mediating Role of the University Support: Evidence From France, Germany, Russia, and the UK
The rapid and unplanned change to teaching and learning in the online format brought by COVID-19 has likely impacted many, if not all, aspects of university students' lives worldwide. To contribute to the investigation of this change, this study focuses on the impact of the pandemic on student well-being, which has been found to be as important to student lifelong success as their academic achievement. Student well-being has been linked to their engagement and performance in curricular, co-curricular, and extracurricular activities, intrinsic motivation, satisfaction, meaning making, and mental health. The purpose of this study was to examine how student perceptions of their degree completion and future job prospects during the pandemic impact their well-being and what role university support plays in this relationship. We used the conservation of resources theory to frame our study and to develop five hypotheses that were later tested via structural equation modeling. Data were collected from 2,707 university students in France, Germany, Russia, and UK via an online survey. The results showed that university support provided by instructors and administration plays a mediating role in the relationship between the perceived impact of COVID-19 on degree completion and future job prospects and levels of student well-being. Student well-being is decreased by their concerns for their degree completion but not by their concerns for future job prospects. In turn, concerns for future job prospects affect student well-being over time. These results suggest that in a “new normal,” universities could increase student well-being by making support to student studies a priority, especially for undergraduates. Also, universities should be aware of the students' changing emotional responses to crisis and ensure visibility and accessibility of student support.Peer reviewe
Развитие социологического знания и изменение структуры раздела «60.5 Социология» в Библиотечно-библиографической классификации
There is substantiated the necessity to change the section “60.5 Sociology” in the schedules of the domestic Library bibliographical classification, due to the development of sociological knowledge in the recent decades. Based on the analysis of causes, forms and the nature of changes of sociological knowledge, there is proposed a new version of schedules. Comparative analysis of the previous and proposed versions of the LBC schedules, the analysis of a large mass of the latest literature on sociology allows to point out the increasing multi-paradigmality, interdisciplinarity and historicity of the sociological knowledge. It poses a number of problems to the classifiers on the reflection of these features in the LBC schedules and distributing the literature by sectors of socio-humanitarian knowledge. Some examples of solutions to these problems are proposed in this work.
Genome-wide association study reveals the genetic architecture of growth and meat production traits in a chicken F2 resource population
Background/Objectives: For genomic selection to enhance the efficiency of broiler production, finding SNPs and candidate genes that define the manifestation of main selected traits is essential. We conducted a genome-wide association study (GWAS) for growth and meat productivity traits of roosters from a chicken F2 resource population (n = 152). Methods: The population was obtained by crossing two breeds with contrasting phenotypes for performance indicators, i.e., Russian White (slow-growing) and Cornish White (fast-growing). The birds were genotyped using the Illumina Chicken 60K SNP iSelect BeadChip. After LD filtering of the data, 54,188 SNPs were employed for the GWAS analysis that allowed us to reveal significant specific associations for phenotypic traits of interest and economic importance. Results: At the threshold value of p < 9.2 × 10−7, 83 SNPs associated with body weight at the age of 28, 42, and 63 days were identified, as well as 171 SNPs associated with meat qualities (average daily gain, slaughter yield, and dressed carcass weight and its components). Moreover, 34 SNPs were associated with a group of three or more traits, including 15 SNPs significant for a group of growth traits and 5 SNPs for a group of meat productivity indicators. Relevant to these detected SNPs, nine prioritized candidate genes associated with the studied traits were revealed, including WNT2, DEPTOR, PPA2, UNC80, DDX51, PAPPA, SSC4D, PTPRU, and TLK2. Conclusions: The found SNPs and candidate genes can serve as genetic markers for growth and meat performance characteristics in chicken breeding in order to achieve genetic improvement in broiler production
Association of lipid profile parameters, atherogenic index of plasma, anthropometric parameters with the severity of the COVID-19 course in Novosibirsk women
Background: Our study aimed to assess the relationship between the parameters of the lipid profile, atherogenic index of plasma (AIP), anthropometry influence with the severity of the new coronavirus infection COVID-19 in women. Material and methods. The study design was a cross-sectional study. The research included 138 women aged 29–82 years who had undergone a new coronavirus infection COVID-19 at least two months ago. Participants were divided into three groups by severity of infection: mild (n = 61), moderate (n = 70) and severe (n = 7). Body mass index, waistline and hip circumference, waistline circumference to hip circumference index, total cholesterol, triglycerides, HDL, LDL, AIP were calculated. Statistical processing of the obtained results was carried out using the SPSS software package (version 20.0) using the Mann-Whitney test, univariate logistic regression analysis, Pearson chi-squared test. Results. The levels of HDL-cholesterol were significantly lower in group 3 compared with the level of HDL-cholesterol in women in group 2 (p2-3 = 0.046). BMI was higher in the moderately severe group compared to the mild one (26.32 [23.305; 30.4] versus 28.78 [24.72; 34.77], p1-2 = 0.026). Hip circumference was higher in patients with severe COVID-19 than in patients with mild course (104 [98; 112] versus 114 [109.5; 126], p1-3 = 0.039), AIP was higher in women with severe course compared to women with moderate and mild course (p1-3 = 0.043, p2-3 = 0.04). The results of the logistic regression analysis showed that the moderate course of COVID-19 is associated with BMI (OR = 1.09, 95 % CI 1.019–1.166, p1-2 = 0.012), and the severe course with WC (OR = 1.041, 95 % CI 1.001–1.084, p1-3 = 0.046), AIP value ≥ 0.11 (OR = 13.824, 95 % CI 1.505–126.964, p1-3 = 0.02; OR = 11,579, 95 % CI 1,266–105,219, p2-3 = 0.03) and HDL level < 40 mg/dl (OR = 14,750, 95 % CI 2,317–93,906, p1-3 = 0.004; OR = 8,000, 95 % CI 1,313– 48,538, p1-3 = 0.024). Conclusion. Patients from the group with moderate and severe course of the new coronavirus infection have higher body mass index, hip circumference, AIP, lower HDL values. The chance of a moderate course of COVID-19 is associated with an increased BMI value, and a severe course with WC, AIP ≥ 0.11 and HDL level < 40 mg/dl
