Mombasa's Swahili-Based 'Coasti Slang' in a Super-Diverse Space: Languages in Contact on the Beach

The Kenyan coast, already linguistically super-diverse, has witnessed the emergence of a new coastal language practice, 'Coasti Slang', which arose under conditions of 'partial acquisition' (cf. Lipski, 2002) of German as a Swahili-based genderized style among male multilingual sex workers. It was later adopted by others, who began to manipulate this language variety and expand their repertoires, turning the new style into a business language spoken along the waterfront. As it is currently used, Coasti Slang allows 'beach boys', beach vendors, hotel workers, sex workers and fishermen to deliberately conceal certain aspects of their communications for business purposes while integrating acquired terms from tourist languages (e.g., German, French, Italian) into this new fluid practice. Words from coastal Bantu languages have also entered the language, broadening the community of practice. Today, this language practice draws on speakers' indexical linguistic biographies, reflecting globalized creativity. Coasti Slang is thus neither a youth language nor merely a secret language, but a mobile and fluid practice that involves linguistic manipulation, originally linked to the gendered performance of linguistic masculinity among 'beach boys', and from then on increasingly used in coastal petty trade. The present paper is the first to shed light on the use of linguistic strategies in Coasti Slang, speakers' acquisition patterns and repertoires, the surrounding linguistic landscapes along the Kenyan coast, and the continued spread of this variety among speakers of all genders and professions

Speaking with a Difference: Border Thinking in Rufumbira

The present study approaches variation in Rufumbira, a Bantu language of southwestern Uganda and a variety of Kinyarwanda (JD60) from the angle of variationist sociolinguistics and postcolonial linguistics. By analyzing 'border thinking' in Rufumbira, the thesis intends to give a sociohistorical overview of the emergence of the language and likewise aims at discussing the most salient structural differences between Rufumbira and (standardized) Kinyarwanda. Apart from phonological and morphosyntactic divergence, the main focus lies on the social meaning of linguistic variation across and within the border triangle of Uganda, Rwanda and DR Congo, taking alternative approaches into account on how to conceptualize the colonial and geographical as well as linguistic and cultural boundaries in this contact zone

Exposé zur Ausstellung NORMALIMINALITIES An exhibition of artefacts from various Souths and Norths Ausstellungskonzept Die Ausstellung NORMALIMINALITIES: An exhibition of artefacts from various southes wurde während der Tagung des Global South Studies Center am 7-9 Juni 2017 im Seminargebäude aufgebaut. Die Ausstellung fand sowohl im Foyer als auch in den Toilettenräumen statt, wodurch sie mit etablierten Konzepten von Musealität brach und (zwangsläufig) von dem größten Teil des Tagungspublikums besucht wurde. Die Ausstellung thematisiert die kritische Reflexion etablierter Konzepte – wie (Global) South vs. (Global) North – vor dem Hintergrund aktueller Forschungen zu AkteurInnen und Verortungen in Arenen des globalen Massentourismus und der mit ihm verbundenen Migrationen und Identitätskonstruktionen; insbesondere wird der Ort „Malle/Ballermann“ in seiner Relevanz für diese Debatten vorgestellt. Unter anderem produziert die Ausstellung eine Einsicht in Vieldeutigkeiten (anstelle von „Klarheit“) und die Vielfalt von Perspektiven, in denen der Süden abhängig vom Standpunkt des Betrachters unterschiedliche Definitions- und Wahrnehmungsmöglichkeiten offeriert. Dabei wird versucht sich von der Festlegung, was an diesem Ort den Norden und den Süden definiert zu distanzieren und die Besucher der Ausstellung diese Einordnung selbst entscheiden zu lassen. Ebenso überlässt die Ausstellung dem Besucher die Einschätzung eines Objekts als „normal“ oder „liminal“ und öffnet so den Raum für kontroverse Diskussionen sowohl in Bezug auf die Anstößigkeit als auch in Bezug auf die relative Ausgrenzung derartiger Orte aus der wissenschaftlichen Diskussion. Liminalität und Transgression sollen als situativ, kontextabhängig und perspektivisch erkannt werden. Die Ausstellung bringt Northener und Southener auf eine Ebene an einem Ort, der für keinen der Akteure eine Heimat darstellt, an dem jedoch die reziproke Abhängigkeit und die daraus entstehende Interaktion grundlegend sind, um das Konstrukt Ballermann in Funktion zu halten. Die Dokumentation des Widerspruchs von oft absurden Inszenierungen als alltäglicher Routine wird vervollständigt durch die Einbeziehung einer kritischen Selbstreflexion und -darstellung der an dem Projekt beteiligten WissenschaftlerInnen und ihrer Präsenz in diesem Widerspruchskonstrukt. Hierbei soll auch der Raum für einen empathischen Disput des Bedürfnisses der Aufrechterhaltung solcher Arenen geschaffen werden. Das heißt, diese Ausstellung findet ihre Begründung bereits darin, dass „wir“ den Ort Ballermann geschaffen haben: rückblickend will niemand zugeben, dass er dort war, und niemand will sich damit akademisch beschäftigen (weil es liminal, tabu und peinlich ist). Dennoch wird konsequent aufrecht erhalten, was genau die Widersprüchlichkeit des Ortes ausmacht

В результате проведенного анализа определен характер связей, а также характеристики, определяющие нагрузку ЛЭП, и их динамика. Исследована связь величин активных и реактивных мощностей при согласованных и встречных перетоках. Установлены достаточные статистические выборки, с приемлемой точностью описывающие процесс в целом
