An Eccentric Hot Jupiter Orbiting the Subgiant HD 185269

We report the detection of a Jupiter-mass planet in a 6.838 day orbit around the 1.28 solar mass subgiant HD 185269. The eccentricity of HD 185269b (e = 0.30) is unusually large compared to other planets within 0.1 AU of their stars. Photometric observations demonstrate that the star is constant to +/-0.0001 mag on the radial velocity period, strengthening our interpretation of a planetary companion. This planet was detected as part of our radial velocity survey of evolved stars located on the subgiant branch of the H-R diagram--also known as the Hertzsprung Gap. These stars, which have masses between 1.2 and 2.5 solar masses, play an important role in the investigation of the frequency of extrasolar planets as a function of stellar mass.Comment: 18 pages, 4 figures, 3 tables, ApJ in press (scheduled for Dec 2006, v652n2

Evaluation of Sweet Grain Sorghum Silage for Dairy Cows as an Alternative to Irrigated Maize Silage

Under European dairy cattle rearing conditions, whole plant maize silage is the main part of the dairy cow\u27s diet especially during the winter season. Nevertheless maize production can be limited in some areas because summer rainfall is insufficient and so irrigation is necessary. Grain sorghum hybrids, and especially sweet sorghum types, are potentially of great interest to avoid this water consumption (Lemaire et al., 1996, Legarto, 2000). For this reason we evaluated in 2003 the benefits and limits of a sweet grain sorghum silage for dairy milk production, compared to an irrigated maize silage. Produtividade, fertilidade do solo e estado nutricional de clones de guaranazeiro cultivados com fontes orgânicas de nutrientes.

RESUMO: O guaraná [Paullinia cupana var. sorbilis (Mart.) Ducke] é um dos produtos agrícolas mais importantes no Estado do Amazonas, sendo necessário implantar um sistema de produção de baixo impacto ambiental e econômico, visando principalmente ao pequeno produtor da região. Para isso, foi realizado um experimento com três clones de guaranazeiro (CMU 871, CMU 300 e CMU 612) cultivados em condições de campo em Manaus, Estado do Amazonas, sobre Latossolo Amarelo Distrófico (Oxisol) com 696 g kg-1 de argila. O delineamento experimental utilizado foi o confundimentos 33 com uma repetição. Os tratamentos estudados foram: carvão vegetal (0; 800; 1600 kg ha-1), esterco de galinha (0; 2720; 5440 kg ha-1) e farinha de ossos e carne (0; 80; 160 kg ha-1). Foram avaliados os seguintes aspectos: a produtividade, a fertilidade do solo e o estado nutricional. O clone CMU 871 mostrou-se mais promissor para o cultivo dentro do sistema utilizado. Nos três clones, as maiores produções de guaraná foram obtidas com o uso de 1600 kg ha-1 de carvão vegetal, 2720 kg ha?1 de esterco de galinha e 160 kg ha-1 de farinha de ossos e carne. Nas condições edafoclimáticas estudadas, a quantidade aplicada em cobertura de carvão vegetal não influenciou a fertilidade do solo e o estado nutricional do guaranazeiro. ABSTRACT: Guarana [Paullinia cupana var. sorbilis (Mart.) Ducke] is one of the most important crops in the State of Amazonas, Brazil. Despite its importance, there is lack of information regarding alternative cropping systems that could lower environmental impacts while improving the economic development of smallholders in the region. This study was carried out using a 3 × 3 experimental design with one replicate. Three rates of charcoal (0; 800; and 1600 kg ha-1), chicken manure (0; 2720; and 5440 kg ha?1), and meat and bone meal (0; 80; and 160 kg ha-1) were applied on three guarana clones (CMU 871, CMU 300 and CMU 612) grown under field conditions in a soil classified as dystrophic Yellow Latosol (Oxisol) with 780 g kg-1 of clay. The yield, soil fertility and nutritional status of the CMU 871, CMU 300, and CMU 612 guarana clones were evaluated. The clone CMU 871 presented the highest potential for cultivation in the system used. For all the three clones e valuated, the highest yield was obtained with the use of 2720 kg ha-1 of chicken manure, 160 kg ha?1 of meat and bone meal, and 1600 kg ha-1 of charcoal per year. For the soil and climatic conditions where the experiment was carried out, the amount of charcoal spread did not affect the soil fertility and nutritional status of guarana plants

Estabelecimento de pastagens cultivadas, em area de chapada, na microrregiao de Valenca do Piaui.

Com base nas observacoes efetuadas, podem ser enumerados varios pontos importantes quando do estabelecimento de pastagem cultivada: 1) Controle da vegetacao arbustiva nao desejavel atraves do desmatamento com grade pesada, a uma profundidade adequada. Apos o desmatamento, uma ou duas gradagens com grade hidraulica sao necessarias para diminuir a presenca das invasoras herbaceas que pode, tambem prejudicar o estabelecimento das forrageiras. 2) Face a baixa fertilidade do solo deve ser feitas uma adubacao com fosforo e potassio para permitir o melhor estabelecimento da pastagem plantada. Aconselha-se que a distribuicao dos adubos sejam feitas em linhas, de modo a aumentar o seu aproveitamento pelas plantas e diminuir a fixacao pelo solo. 3)Alem destes cuidados, ainda ha que se considerar a quantidade e distribuicao das chuvas como fator decisivo quando da implantacao de uma pastagem.bitstream/item/95759/1/CT110001.pd
