    Heroes or villains? Migrant essential workers and combined hostilities of Covid-19 and Brexit

    Villainised in populist discourses, migrant workers - especially those doing essential work - gained some positive attention in the context of Covid-19. Considered to be heroes and being clapped for weekly has however been short-lived against the increasingly hostile immigration politics of the UK. How have the combined hostilities of Brexit and the pandemic affected migrant workers from Eastern Europe? Were they heroes just for one day? We look at the case of Poles who constitute one of the UK’s largest foreign-born populations

    While studies have demonstrated substantial differences in beta2-adrenergic agonist enantiomer pharmacology, enantioselective disposition of long-acting beta2-adrenergic ligand racemic (rac)-formoterol in blood is unexplored after inhaled therapy given analytical challenges. Furthermore, information on enantioselective disposition and partitioning of beta2 -adrenergic agonist in skeletal muscle is absent despite its promising data on muscle anabolism in humans. Using a sensitive UPLC-MS/MS (ultra-high performance liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry) assay, we determined disposition of (R,R)-formoterol and (S,S)-formoterol in plasma and skeletal muscle samples from 11 non-asthmatic men who had inhaled rac-formoterol at therapeutic doses (2×27 μg). Mean (SD) concentrations of (R,R)- and (S,S)-formoterol in plasma and in muscle biopsies of the vastus lateralis 1 h after inhalation of formoterol were 31 (15) and 45 (18) pg×mL-1 for (R,R)-formoterol and (S,S)-formoterol, respectively, in plasma, and 0.56 (0.32) and 0.51 (0.29) pg×mgwet wt-1, respectively, in muscle. Formoterol exhibited different enantioselective disposition in plasma and muscle (p R,R):(S,S)-formoterol ratio was lower than 0 [-0.17(0.07), p R,R):(S,S)-formoterol ratio was slightly higher than 0 [0.04(0.07), p R,R):(S,S)-formoterol ratio in muscle was related to muscle fibre-type composition. Furthermore, formoterol induced an approximately two-fold increase in muscle p-PKASer/thr phosphorylation (p 2 -adrenergic response. Collectively, these findings suggest that formoterol exhibits modest enantioselective disposition in plasma after inhaled therapy in humans, which appear related to a greater (R,R)-enantiomer disposition in skeletal muscle that may be dependent on fibre-type composition

    Probing microwave fields and enabling in-situ experiments in a transmission electron microscope.

    A technique is presented whereby the performance of a microwave device is evaluated by mapping local field distributions using Lorentz transmission electron microscopy (L-TEM). We demonstrate the method by measuring the polarisation state of the electromagnetic fields produced by a microstrip waveguide as a function of its gigahertz operating frequency. The forward and backward propagating electromagnetic fields produced by the waveguide, in a specimen-free experiment, exert Lorentz forces on the propagating electron beam. Importantly, in addition to the mapping of dynamic fields, this novel method allows detection of effects of microwave fields on specimens, such as observing ferromagnetic materials at resonance

    ‘They made bets that I’d die’: impacts of COVID-19 on Polish essential workers in the UK

    The Covid-19 pandemic exposed the UK’s socio-economic dependence on a chronically insecure migrant essential workforce. While risking their lives to offset the devastating effects of the pandemic, many migrant workers found themselves in precarious professional and personal circumstances (e.g. temporary zero-hours contracts, work exploitation, limited access to health and social services). This article explores the health, social, economic, and cultural impacts of the pandemic on migrant essential workers in the UK. It focuses on one of the largest non-British nationalities, the Polish community, who – while employed across a range of roles and sectors – are overrepresented in lower-paid essential jobs. The article discusses variegated and interconnected impacts of the pandemic on these workers. It illustrates how Covid-19 affects them in very uneven and sometimes contrasting ways depending on their individual positionalities. Methodologically, the article draws upon 1105 responses to an online survey, 40 interviews with Polish essential workers in the UK and 10 expert interviews with key stakeholders providing support to migrant workers in the country. It is based on the first major research project investigating lived experiences of migrant essential workers in the context of the Covid-19 pandemic funded by the UK Economic and Social Research Council

    Characterising citizenship: race, criminalisation and the extension of internal borders

    Citizenship in the UK has in recent times been explicitly framed as a privilege not a right, granted selectively and withdrawn from some. There are several criteria that assist the government in distinguishing those deserving of British citizenship from those undeserving, one of the key ones being ‘character’. The ‘bad character’ criterion can apply for multiple reasons from inconsistencies in immigration paperwork to direct or indirect political associations with a range of disavowed political groups. Although not new, ‘bad character’ has become a principle reason for citizenship refusals in recent years, though has received little academic scrutiny. By bringing together quantitative and qualitative data on citizenship refusals, the article maps the scale of this measure, outlining what it means and to whom it applies. It argues that the ‘bad character’ criterion operates as a racialised exclusionary mechanism that constitutes a new set of amorphous restrictions upon the lives of non-white denizens
