Activities and Stabilities of Au-Modified Stepped-Pt Single-Crystal Electrodes as Model Cathode Catalysts in Polymer Electrolyte Fuel Cells

    No full text
The purpose of this study is to test the concept of protecting vulnerable sites on cathode catalysts in polymer electrolyte fuel cells. Pt single-crystal surfaces were modified by depositing Au atoms selectively on (100) step sites and their electrocatalytic activities for oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) and stabilities against potential cycles were examined. The ORR activities were raised by 70% by the Au modifications, and this rise in the activity was ascribed to enhanced local ORR activities on Pt(111) terraces by the surface Au atoms. The Au modifications also stabilized the Pt surfaces against potential cycles by protecting the low-coordinated (100) step sites from surface reorganizations. Thus, the surface modification by selective Au depositions on vulnerable sites is a promising method to enhance both the ORR activity and durability of the catalysts

Catalytic Cycle Employing a TEMPO–Anion Complex to Obtain a Secondary Mg–O2 Battery

Nonaqueous Mg–O2 batteries are suitable only as primary cells because MgO precipitates formed during discharging are not decomposed electrochemically at ambient temperatures. To address this problem, the present study examined the ability of the 2,2,6,6-tetramethylpiperidine-oxyl (TEMPO)–anion complex to catalyze the decomposition of MgO. It was determined that this complex was capable of chemically decomposing MgO at 60 °C. A catalytic cycle for the realization of a rechargeable Mg–O2 electrode was designed by combining the decomposition of MgO via the TEMPO–anion complex and the TEMPO–redox couple. This work also demonstrates that a nonaqueous Mg–O2 battery incorporating acrylate polymer having TEMPO side units in the cathode shows evidence of being rechargeable

Anode Material Associated with Polymeric Networking of Triflate Ions Formed on Mg

We have examined anode materials with anions as an ion transport species to solve metal deposition in rechargeable batteries intrinsically. Mg deposition-dissolution tests were conducted using some ionic liquid electrolytes at 60 °C, and a new electrochemical reaction was observed in addition to Mg deposition and dissolution in an electrolyte of Mg(CF3SO3)2 and <i>N</i>-methyl-N-propylpiperidinium bis(trifluoromethane sulfonyl)amide. The reaction was determined to be based on the formation and release of a polymeric network of triflate ions (CF3SO3–) on the Mg metal surface, which suggests a novel anode material with anion carriers. An anion battery is also demonstrated using this phenomenon and incorporating an acrylate polymer with 2,2,6,6-tetramethylpiperidine-oxyl side units in the cathode to provide evidence of the rechargeability by the intermediary anion carrier

Operando Measurement of Solid Electrolyte Interphase Formation at Working Electrode of Li-Ion Battery by Time-Slicing Neutron Reflectometry

    No full text
We report the first operando measurement of solid electrolyte interphase (SEI) formation at an electrode using in situ neutron reflectometry. The results revealed the growth of the SEI and intercalation of ions during the charge reaction. Furthermore, we propose a way of evaluating the charge used for the SEI formation

We analyse feasibility of collision detection on transmission lines with optical interferometer. We first provide a brief introduction into interferometry, along with a description of the optical interferometer used for measurements in this study. Afterwards, we describe the conducted experimental protocol and signal processing methodology. The focus is on implementation of algorithms for signal segmentation and collision classification. We used zero-crossing algorithm to transform signals into segmentation domain. Classification of collisions is done with a multilayer neural network trained by the backpropagation algorithm. The results demonstrate an average success rate of 77% for segmentation and classification of collision with five different objects
