    On the onset of cosmological backreaction

    Cosmological backreaction has been suggested as an explanation of dark energy and is heavily disputed since. We combine cosmological perturbation theory with Buchert's non-perturbative framework, calculate the relevant averaged observables up to second order in the comoving synchronous gauge, and discuss their gauge dependence. With the help of an integrability condition the leading second order contributions follow from the first order calculation. We focus on the onset of cosmological backreaction, as a perturbative treatment is necessarily restricted to the era when the effect is still small. We demonstrate that the leading contributions to all averaged physical observables are completely specified on the boundary of the averaged domain. For any finite domain these surface terms are nonzero in general and thus backreaction is for real. We map the backreaction effect on an effectively homogeneous and isotropic fluid.     Two-particle response in Cluster Dynamical Mean-Field Theory: Formalism and application to the Raman Response of High-temperature Superconductors

    A method is presented for the unbiased numerical computation of two-particle response functions of correlated electron materials via a solution of the dynamical mean-field equations in the presence of a perturbing field. The power of the method is demonstrated via a computation of the Raman B1gB_{1g} and B2gB_{2g} scattering intensities of the two dimensional Hubbard model, in parameter regimes believed to be relevant to high-temperature superconductivity. The theory reproduces the `two-magnon' peak characteristic of the Raman intensity of the insulating parent compounds of high-TcT_c copper oxide superconductors and shows how it evolves to a quasiparticle response as carriers are added. The method can be applied in any situation where a solution of the equilibrium dynamical mean-field equations is feasible

    Optical conductivity in cluster dynamical mean field theory: formalism and application to high temperature superconductors

    The optical conductivity of the one-band Hubbard model is calculated using the 'Dynamical Cluster Approximation' implementation of dynamical mean field theory for parameters appropriate to high temperature copper-oxide superconductors. The calculation includes vertex corrections and the result demonstrates their importance. At densities of one electron per site, an insulating state is found with gap value and above-gap absorption consistent with measurements. As carriers are added the above gap conductivity rapidly weakens and a three component structure emerges, with a low frequency 'Drude' peak, a mid-infrared absorption, and a remnant of the insulating gap. The mid-infrared feature obtained at intermediate dopings is shown to arise from a pseudogap structure in the density of states. On further doping the conductivity evolves to the Drude peak plus weakly frequency dependent tail structure expected for less strongly correlated metals.Comment: 5 pages, 3 figure

    Genotoxic effects of low 2.45 GHz microwave radiation exposures on Sprague Dawley rats

    This paper investigates the genotoxic effects of 2.45 GHz microwave (MW) radiation exposure at low specific absorption rates (SAR). 200 Sprague Dawley rats were exposed to SAR values between 0.48 and 4.30 W.kg-1 and the DNA of different tissues extracted, precipitated and quantified. Induced deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) damages were assessed using the methods of DNA Direct Amplification of Length Polymorphisms (DALP) and the Single Cell Gel Electrophoresis (SCGE). Densitometric gel analysis demonstrated distinctly altered band patterns within the range of 40 and 120 bp in exposed samples and in the tail DNA of the same animals before exposure compared with control. Results were re-affirmed with SCGE (comet assay) for the same cells. Different tissues had different sensitivities to exposures with the brains having the highest. DNA damages were sex-independent. There was statistically significant difference in the Olive moment and % DNA in the tail of the exposed tissues compared with control (p < 0.05). Observed effects were attributed to magnetic field interactions and production of reactive oxygen species. We conclude that low SAR 2.45 GHz MW radiation exposures can induce DNA single strand breaks and the direct genome analysis of DNA of various tissues demonstrated potential for genotoxicity

    Modeling and measurement of a micro-optic beam deflector

    The use is studied of a unity-magnification micro-optic beam deflector. The defelector consists of two arrays of positively powered lenslets. The lenslets on each array are arranged in a square grid. Design criteria are based on usefulness in optical data storage devices. The deflector is designed to operate over a + or - 1.6 range of deflection angles. Modeling results are compared with interferometric analysis of the wavefront from a single lenslet pair. The results indicate that the device is nearly diffraction limited, but there are substantial wavefront errors at the edges and corners of the lenslets

    fgui: A Method for Automatically Creating Graphical User Interfaces for Command-Line R Packages

    The fgui R package is designed for developers of R packages, to help rapidly, and sometimes fully automatically, create a graphical user interface for a command line R package. The interface is built upon the Tcl/Tk graphical interface included in R. The package further facilitates the developer by loading in the help files from the command line functions to provide context sensitive help to the user with no additional effort from the developer. Passing a function as the argument to the routines in the fgui package creates a graphical interface for the function, and further options are available to tweak this interface for those who want more flexibility.
