3-D finite element analysis of coupling current in multifilamentary AC superconducting cable
A method for analyzing the 3-D coupling current which is induced by an AC magnetic field in a multifilamentary superconducting cable is developed. In this method, such a superconducting cable, in which many twisted filaments are embedded in a matrix, is treated as macroscopic, having anisotropic conductivity. The method for treating the anisotropy of conductivity and the 3-D finite-element formulation are presented. The effectiveness of the technique is illustrated by the analysis of the 3-D coupling currents of superconducting cables.</p
Development of high-pressure low-temperature plane strain testing apparatus for methane hydrate-bearing sand
AbstractA high-pressure low-temperature plane strain testing apparatus was developed for visualizing the deformation of methane hydrate-bearing sand due to methane hydrate production. Using this testing apparatus, plane strain compression tests were performed on pure Toyoura sand and methane hydrate-bearing sand with localized deformation measurements. From the results, it was observed that the methane hydrate-free specimens, despite their relatively high density, showed changes in compressive volume. Marked increases in the initial stiffness and strength of the methane hydrate-bearing sand were observed (methane hydrate saturation of SMH=60%). Moreover, the volumetric strain changed from compressive to dilative. For the specimens with methane hydrate, a dilative behavior above SMH=0% was observed. An image analysis showed that the shear bands of the methane hydrate-bearing sand were thinner and steeper than those of the host sand. In addition, the dilative volumetric strain in the shear band increased markedly when methane hydrate existed in the pore spaces
Revisiting a kNN-based Image Classification System with High-capacity Storage
In existing image classification systems that use deep neural networks, the
knowledge needed for image classification is implicitly stored in model
parameters. If users want to update this knowledge, then they need to fine-tune
the model parameters. Moreover, users cannot verify the validity of inference
results or evaluate the contribution of knowledge to the results. In this
paper, we investigate a system that stores knowledge for image classification,
such as image feature maps, labels, and original images, not in model
parameters but in external high-capacity storage. Our system refers to the
storage like a database when classifying input images. To increase knowledge,
our system updates the database instead of fine-tuning model parameters, which
avoids catastrophic forgetting in incremental learning scenarios. We revisit a
kNN (k-Nearest Neighbor) classifier and employ it in our system. By analyzing
the neighborhood samples referred by the kNN algorithm, we can interpret how
knowledge learned in the past is used for inference results. Our system
achieves 79.8% top-1 accuracy on the ImageNet dataset without fine-tuning model
parameters after pretraining, and 90.8% accuracy on the Split CIFAR-100 dataset
in the task incremental learning setting.Comment: 16 pages, 7 figures, 6 table
MicroRNA, hsa-miR-200c, is an independent prognostic factor in pancreatic cancer and its upregulation inhibits pancreatic cancer invasion but increases cell proliferation
<p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Recently, the microRNA-200 family was reported to affect cancer biology by regulating epithelial to mesenchymal transition (EMT). Especially, the expression of <it>miR-200c </it>has been shown to be associated with upregulating the expression of <it>E-cadherin</it>, a gene known to be involved in pancreatic cancer behavior. However, the significance of <it>miR-200c </it>in pancreatic cancer is unknown.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>In the present study, we investigated the relationship between <it>E-cadherin </it>and <it>miR-200c </it>expression in a panel of 14 pancreatic cancer cell lines and in macro-dissected formalin-fixed paraffin-embedded (FFPE) tissue samples obtained from 99 patients who underwent pancreatectomy for pancreatic cancer. We also investigated the effects of <it>miR-200c </it>on the proliferation and invasion of pancreatic cancer cells.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>We found that patients with high levels of <it>miR-200c </it>expression had significantly better survival rates than those with low levels of <it>miR-200c </it>expression. We also found a remarkably strong correlation between the levels of <it>miR-200c </it>and <it>E-cadherin </it>expression.</p> <p>Conclusions</p> <p>These data indicate that <it>miR-200c </it>may play a role in the pancreatic cancer biology and may be a novel marker for the prognosis of pancreatic cancer.</p
A Case of Central Retinal Artery Occlusion after Chiropractic Manipulation of the Neck
Here we report a case of central retinal artery occlusion after chiropractic manipulation on the neck. A 49-year old man presented at the hospital because of sudden visual loss in his right eye after chiropractic neck manipulation. He had received chiropractic manipulation of the neck by a chiropractor eight days prior. When he first visited us, his best corrected visual acuity in his right eye was hand motion. A full ophthalmic examination was performed. There was cherry-red spot in the macula in his right eye. We performed a fluorescein angiogram and cervical color Doppler. The arterio-venous transit time in the fluorescein angiogram was delayed, and we detected stenosis of the right internal carotid artery with diffuse atherosclerotic plaques in the right common carotid artery. We prescribed ginko biloba extract (Tanamin). Three years after his first visit, the best corrected visual acuity of his right eye was 20 / 200
Low serum albumin concentration is associated with increased risk of osteoporosis in postmenopausal patients with rheumatoid arthritis
Background: The risk of osteoporosis in patients with rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is frequently overlooked, and investigating a simple indicator in routine care may be beneficial to motivate osteoporosis examination. The aim of this retrospective, case-controlled study was to identify the correlation between serum albumin concentrations and the prevalence of osteoporosis in postmenopausal patients with RA. Methods: This study enrolled 197 patients who underwent dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry of lumbar spine (LS) and proximal femur without osteoporosis treatment [mean age, 67.5 years; disease duration, 12.8 years; Disease Activity Score assessing 28 joints with C-reactive protein, 2.0; prednisolone dose, 4.9 mg/day (usage, 42.6%); and LS T-score, −1.9]. Patients were classified into 2 groups: osteoporosis, defined as ≥ 1 part bone mineral density T-score ≤ −2.5 or history of fragility fracture of the vertebra or proximal femur (121 patients), and non-osteoporosis (76 patients). Groups were then matched by propensity score using clinical backgrounds affecting bone metabolism. Results: In non-matched model, serum albumin concentration was significantly associated with osteoporosis-related factors such as aging, inflammation, physical disability, and glucocorticoid dose. Multivariate logistic regression revealed that serum albumin concentration was independently and significantly associated with osteoporosis risk (odds ratio = 0.22, 95% confidence interval = 0.08, 0.61, p = 0.0033). After propensity score matching, 57 patients for each group showed that in addition to the LS and femoral neck T-scores (p < 0.001), serum albumin concentrations (p = 0.01) remained lower in the osteoporosis group compared to non-osteoporosis group. Receiver operating characteristic curve analysis in non-matched model revealed that when cut-off value of serum albumin concentration for indicating osteoporosis was set at 4.2 g/dl, the area under the curve was 0.69, sensitivity 0.74, and specificity 0.58. Conclusions: Low serum albumin concentration was significantly and independently associated with the prevalence of osteoporosis, which may be considered as one of the osteoporosis-related factors in postmenopausal patients with RA.Nagayama Y., Ebina K., Tsuboi H., et al. Comparison of Effects on Gene Expression Activity of Low-Molecular-Weight Lychee Fruit Polyphenol (Oligonol®), Adenosine, and Minoxidil in Human Dermal Papilla Cells
Background: Oligonol® (OLG) is a functional food product and ingredient for cosmetics derived from a lychee fruit polyphenol. It has been reported to act on the skin as an anti-inflammatory and prevent UVB-induced skin damage.Aim: In this study, with the aim of exploring new functionalities of OLG on the scalp, we investigated the effect of OLG on human dermal papilla cells by comparing with adenosine and minoxidil at the genetic level.Method: OLG, adenosine, and minoxidil were applied to human dermal papilla cell lines for 24 h, after which VEGF, FGF-7, WNT5a, and WNT10a mRNA expressions were measured by real-time PCR analysis. Additionally, using DNA microarrays, we investigated the effect on 205 inflammation-related genes.Result: Consequently, in human dermal papilla cell lines, FGF-7 and WNT10a mRNA expression were observed in 100 µg/mL OLG-supplemented cells. The results of the DNA microarray analysis showed that 10 genes were suppressed by OLG.Conclusions: OLG may be expected to affect function of human dermal papilla cell by regulating the expression of genes related to cell proliferation and inflammation
