Erbium-doped-fiber-based broad visible range frequency comb with a 30 GHz mode spacing for astronomical applications

Optical frequency combs have the potential to improve the precision of the radial velocity measurement of celestial bodies, leading to breakthroughs in such fields as exoplanet exploration. For these purposes, the comb must have a broad spectral coverage in the visible wavelength region, a wide mode spacing that can be resolved with a high dispersion spectrograph, and sufficient robustness to operate for long periods even in remote locations. We have realized a comb system with a 30 GHz mode spacing, 62 % available wavelength coverage in the visible region, and 40 dB spectral contrast by combining a robust erbium-doped-fiber-based femtosecond laser, mode filtering with newly designed optical cavities, and broadband-visible-range comb generation using a chirped periodically-poled LiNbO3 ridge waveguide. The system durability and reliability are also promising because of the stable spectrum, which is due to the use of almost all polarization-maintaining fiber optics, moderate optical power, and good frequency repeatability obtained with a wavelength-stabilized laser.Comment: 19 pages, 5 figure

Beyond Vectors: Subspace Representations for Set Operations of Embeddings

In natural language processing (NLP), the role of embeddings in representing linguistic semantics is crucial. Despite the prevalence of vector representations in embedding sets, they exhibit limitations in expressiveness and lack comprehensive set operations. To address this, we attempt to formulate and apply sets and their operations within pre-trained embedding spaces. Inspired by quantum logic, we propose to go beyond the conventional vector set representation with our novel subspace-based approach. This methodology constructs subspaces using pre-trained embedding sets, effectively preserving semantic nuances previously overlooked, and consequently consistently improving performance in downstream tasks

Examining Minimal Important Change of the Self-Assessment Scale of Clinical Reasoning in Occupational Therapy

    Get PDF
The purpose of the study was to establish and quantify the minimal important change (MIC) value necessary to determine gains or losses in clinical reasoning during student fieldwork assignments as measured by the Self-Assessment of Clinical Reasoning in Occupational Therapy (SA-CROT). This multicenter prospective longitudinal study was conducted with students on their occupational therapy fieldwork in Japan. Two anchor-based methods were used to estimate the MIC values: a receiver operating characteristic-based method and a predictive modeling-based method. The MIC was adjusted based on the percentage of participants who exhibited improvement. Administered were the SA-CROT and the Global Rating of Change (GRC) scale as an anchor. A total of 111 students from 11 occupational therapy educational programs in Japan responded (response rate 29%). Overall, there was a significant difference (p \u3c .001, effect size was r = .80) in SA-CROT before and after fieldwork, and 81% of students showed improvement in the GRC scale. The adjusted MIC value was 3.69, with 95% confidence interval of 2.29–4.97. This anchor-based, adjusted MIC value is the most reliable value to interpret the changes in SA-CROT before and after fieldwork. The SA-CROT\u27s MIC value can be used as a cut-off point from a learner-centered perspective when considering educational methods and environments in fieldwork

One-pot esterification and amidation of phenolic acids

We developed a new one-pot reaction of phenolic acids to afford the corresponding esters and amides through acyl-protected and activated phenolic acid intermediates. The simultaneous protection/activation of phenolic acids with alkylchloroformates proceeded readily in the presence of DMAP at room temperature; subsequent addition of alcohols or amines afforded the corresponding esters or amides. The use of iso-butyloxycarbonyl as the protecting and activating group in the one-pot reactions afforded phenolic esters or amides in 91% average yield. As a practical example of this convenient synthesis, caffeic acid phenethyl ester (CAPE) was readily synthesized from commercially available caffeic acid and phenethyl alcohol in 95% yield, and an isotopomer of CAPE, [3,10-13C2]CAPE, was synthesized in 91% yield from [3-13C]caffeic acid and 2-[1-13C]phenethyl alcohol. This method may be useful for the convenient esterification and amidation of diverse phenolic acids.ArticleTETRAHEDRON. 70(43):8097-8107 (2014)journal articl
