Irrigation Scheduling in Crop Management System

    Get PDF
Center pivor systems are widely used to suppress the irrigation needs of agricultural fields. In this article, we propose an autonomous to improve the low efficiency of this method of irrigation, developing a system based on the water requirement of the plantation, through field data (local temperature, local wind, soil moisture and precipitation forecast) and soil evapotranspiration calculation. The stored information will allow to calculatem the real evapotranspiration, not being necessary to restrict to lysometric measures. Accordingly, it is possible to schedule the irrigation for the period in which it has the lowest cost, considering the energy produced locally and the price of energy bought in the main market. Irrigation must be carried out within the time interval in which the plantation does not reach the wilding point, so it will be carried out at the time of the lowest cost. The present work was done and funded in the scope of the following project: Eco Rural IoT project funded by TETRAMAX-VALUECHAIN-TTX-1, and UID/EEA/00760/2019 funded by FEDER Funds through COMPETE program and by National Funds through FCT.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

The angiotensin II AT(1), receptor structure-activity correlations in the light of rhodopsin structure

The most prevalent physiological effects of ANG II, the main product of the renin-angiotensin system, are mediated by the AT(1) receptor, a rhodopsin-like AGPCR. Numerous studies of the cardiovascular effects of synthetic peptide analogs allowed a detailed mapping of ANG II's structural requirements for receptor binding and activation, which were complemented by site-directed mutagenesis studies on the AT(1) receptor to investigate the role of its structure in ligand binding, signal transduction, phosphorylation, binding to arrestins, internalization, desensitization, tachyphylaxis, and other properties. the knowledge of the high-resolution structure of rhodopsin allowed homology modeling of the AT(1) receptor. the models thus built and mutagenesis data indicate that physiological (agonist binding) or constitutive (mutated receptor) activation may involve different degrees of expansion of the receptor's central cavity. Residues in ANG II structure seem to control these conformational changes and to dictate the type of cytosolic event elicited during the activation. 1) Agonist aromatic residues (Phe(8) and Tyr(4)) favor the coupling to G protein, and 2) absence of these residues can favor a mechanism leading directly to receptor internalization via phosphorylation by specific kinases of the receptor's COOH-terminal Ser and Thr residues, arrestin binding, and clathrin-dependent coated-pit vesicles. On the other hand, the NH2-terminal residues of the agonists ANG II and [Sar(1)]-ANG II were found to bind by two distinct modes to the AT(1) receptor extracellular site flanked by the COOH-terminal segments of the EC-3 loop and the NH2-terminal domain. Since the [Sar(1)]-ligand is the most potent molecule to trigger tachyphylaxis in AT(1) receptors, it was suggested that its corresponding binding mode might be associated with this special condition of receptors.Universidade Federal de São Paulo, Escola Paulista Med, Dept Biophys, BR-04023062 São Paulo, BrazilUniv São Paulo, Ribeirao Preto Med Sch, Dept Biochem & Immunol, BR-14049 Ribeirao Preto, BrazilUniv São Paulo, Inst Chem, Dept Biochem, São Paulo, BrazilUniversidade Federal de São Paulo, Escola Paulista Med, Dept Biophys, BR-04023062 São Paulo, BrazilWeb of Scienc

The State of the ReCLes. pt CLIL training project

    Get PDF
Content and Language Integrated Learning (CLIL), an area that has only recently been more thoroughly explored for appropriate use at higher levels of education, has been one of the research areas identified by the Association of Language Centers in Higher Education in Portugal (ReCLes.pt). ReCLes.pt members – administration and research professors are striving to make a difference in the paucity of scientific publications in this area with the creation of their national program for training content teachers in Portuguese higher education. To best learn from each other in a collaborative network and apply well-informed teaching and learning methodology to English-taught classrooms, the underlying concepts range from classroom management and scaffolding to learner autonomy and from Web 2.0 tools to terminology-based learning. As an update of the current state of the art as interpreted in this project, the outreach and reception will be described in full with attention to some detailed examples of the more successful aspects as well as others where we have found room for improvement. Recommendations will be made for other networks and individual schools aiming to effectively prepare their students for the market by using an integrated approach to content and language learning. This paper reports on the current state of the ongoing ReCLes.pt CLIL Training Project, financed in part by the FCT (the Portuguese Foundation for Science and Technology), with project members from a number of universities and polytechnics across Portugal.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

In this work an alternative chromatographic process was developed for fractionating the (+)-(3R,4R) and ( - )-(3S,4S) enantiomers of the chiral trans β-amino acid trans-2,2,5,5-tetramethylpyrrolidine-3-amino-4-carboxylic acid (POAC), which was protected at its amine group for further coupling to a peptide, polymer or other macromolecule. The HPLC enantioseparation was achieved using a chiral cellulose-based normal stationary phase and isocratic elution. The n-hexane:isopropanol system, always with greater amount of the former component, was used as mobile phase as revealed by improved fractionation property of both components, demonstrated by the separation factor and resolution index values. These parameters presented values of 3.7 and 18.4 and of 2.0 and 6.7 when in 90:10 (v/v) and 80:20 (v/v) n-hexane:isopropanol solutions, respectively. These findings indicate that the one-step chromatographic purification strategy using normal-phase is feasible, thus opening the perspective of a fast large-scale production this paramagnetic spin probe.

Objectives: To describe the clinical and laboratory characteristics of patients on long-term home oxygen therapy followed up by the home care program of Hospital das Clinicas, School of Medicine, Universidade de São Paulo, during a period of 8 years, and to compare groups with and without secondary pulmonary hypertension. To estimate the cost of the program using oxygen concentrators versus oxygen cylinders provided by the hospital. Methods: A descriptive, retrospective cohort study of patients on long-term home oxygen therapy followed up from 2002 to 2009 at the Unit of Pulmonology, Children's Institute, Hospital das Clinicas, School of Medicine, Universidade de São Paulo. Results: We studied 165 patients, of whom 53% were male, with the following medians: age at the beginning of oxygen therapy - 3.6 years; duration of oxygen therapy - 7 years; and survival time after beginning of oxygen therapy - 3.4 years. the main diagnoses were: cystic fibrosis (22%), bronchopulmonary dysplasia (19%), and bronchiolitis obliterans (15%). of the 33 patients who underwent spirometry, 70% had severe obstructive lung disease. Echocardiogram was performed in 134 patients; 51% of them had secondary pulmonary hypertension. There was a statistically significant association between pulmonary hypertension and need of higher oxygen flows (chi-square, p = 0.011), and pulmonary hypertension and longer duration of oxygen therapy (Logrank, p = 0.0001). There was no statistically significant difference between survival time after the beginning of oxygen therapy and pulmonary hypertension. the average monthly costs of the program were: US7,392.93forconcentratorsandUS 7,392.93 for concentrators and US 16,630.92 for cylinders. Conclusions: Long-term home oxygen therapy was used to treat different chronic diseases, predominantly in infants and preschool children. There was a high frequency of pulmonary hypertension associated with longer periods of oxygen use and greater oxygen flow, without association with survival rate. the use of concentrators instead of cylinders may reduce costs significantly.Universidade Federal de São Paulo, Escola Paulista Med, São Paulo, BrazilUniv São Paulo, Fac Med, São Paulo, BrazilUniversidade Federal de São Paulo, Escola Paulista Med, São Paulo, BrazilWeb of Scienc

The spin label amino acid TOAC and its uses in studies of peptides: chemical, physicochemical, spectroscopic, and conformational aspects

    Get PDF
We review work on the paramagnetic amino acid 2,2,6,6-tetramethyl-N-oxyl-4-amino-4-carboxylic acid, TOAC, and its applications in studies of peptides and peptide synthesis. TOAC was the first spin label probe incorporated in peptides by means of a peptide bond. In view of the rigid character of this cyclic molecule and its attachment to the peptide backbone via a peptide bond, TOAC incorporation has been very useful to analyze backbone dynamics and peptide secondary structure. Many of these studies were performed making use of EPR spectroscopy, but other physical techniques, such as X-ray crystallography, CD, fluorescence, NMR, and FT-IR, have been employed. The use of double-labeled synthetic peptides has allowed the investigation of their secondary structure. A large number of studies have focused on the interaction of peptides, both synthetic and biologically active, with membranes. In the latter case, work has been reported on ligands and fragments of GPCR, host defense peptides, phospholamban, and β-amyloid. EPR studies of macroscopically aligned samples have provided information on the orientation of peptides in membranes. More recent studies have focused on peptide–protein and peptide–nucleic acid interactions. Moreover, TOAC has been shown to be a valuable probe for paramagnetic relaxation enhancement NMR studies of the interaction of labeled peptides with proteins. The growth of the number of TOAC-related publications suggests that this unnatural amino acid will find increasing applications in the future

Carbamazepine inhibits angiotensin I-converting enzyme, linking it to the pathogenesis of temporal lobe epilepsy

    Get PDF
We find that a common mutation that increases angiotensin I-converting enzyme activity occurs with higher frequency in male patients suffering from refractory temporal lobe epilepsy. However, in their brains, the activity of the enzyme is downregulated. As an explanation, we surprisingly find that carbamazepine, commonly used to treat epilepsy, is an inhibitor of the enzyme, thus providing a direct link between epilepsy and the renin–angiotensin and kallikrein–kinin systems
