Making Voting Easier: Election Day Registration in New York
As policymakers, election officials, and the public consider whether New York should change the way in which voters are allowed to register to participate in elections, and bring New York State election law into compliance with the Help America Vote Act, the following report provides an analysis of the potential impact of election day registration (EDR) in New York. EDR in New York has the potential to increase voter participation for New Yorkers by as much as: Over 12 percentage point increase in turnout by 18-to-25-year-olds. Nearly 10 percentage point increase in turnout by thosewith a grade school education or less.An 11 point increase in turnout by Latinos and nearly 9 percentage point increase in turnout by African Americans.Over 10 percentage point increase in turnout by those who have lived at their current address for less than six months.Over 12 percentage point increase in turnout by naturalized citizens

Regulation of immune responses to food by commensal microbes
The increasing prevalence of immune-mediated non-communicable chronic diseases, such as food allergies, has prompted a deeper investigation into the role of the gut microbiome in modulating immune responses. Here, we explore the complex interactions between commensal microbes and the host immune system, highlighting the critical role of gut bacteria in maintaining immune homeostasis. We examine how modern lifestyle practices and environmental factors have disrupted co-evolved host–microbe interactions and discuss how changes in microbiome composition impact epithelial barrier function, responses to food allergens, and susceptibility to allergic diseases. Finally, we examine the potential of bioengineered microbiome-based therapies, and live biotherapeutic products, for reestablishing immune homeostasis to prevent or treat food allergies
Observation of Spin-glass-like Behavior in SrRuO3 Epitaxial Thin Films
We report the observation of spin-glass-like behavior and strong magnetic
anisotropy in extremely smooth (~1-3 \AA) roughness) epitaxial (110) and (010)
SrRuO3 thin films. The easy axis of magnetization is always perpendicular to
the plane of the film (unidirectional) irrespective of crystallographic
orientation. An attempt has been made to understand the nature and origin of
spin-glass behavior, which fits well with Heisenberg model.Comment: 5 pages, 5 Figure
Polarized Neutron Inelastic Scattering Study of the Anisotropic Magnetic Fluctuations in the Quasi-1D Ising-like Antiferromagnet TlCoCl
Polarized neutron inelastic scattering experiments have been carried out in
the quasi-1D Ising-like antiferromagnet TlCoCl. We observed the
longitudinal magnetic fluctuation for the spin-wave
excitation continuum, which has not been observed in the unpolarized neutron
inelastic scattering experiments of the quasi-1D Ising-like antiferromagnets
CsCoCl and TlCoCl so far, together with the transverse magnetic
fluctuation . We compared both obtained intensities of
and with the perturbation theory from
the pure Ising limit by Ishimura and Shiba, and a semi-quantitative agreement

Bloch oscillations of magnetic solitons in anisotropic spin-1/2 chains
We study the quantum dynamics of soliton-like domain walls in anisotropic
spin-1/2 chains in the presence of magnetic fields. In the absence of fields,
domain walls form a Bloch band of delocalized quantum states while a static
field applied along the easy axis localizes them into Wannier wave packets and
causes them to execute Bloch oscillations, i.e. the domain walls oscillate
along the chain with a finite Bloch frequency and amplitude. In the presence of
the field, the Bloch band, with a continuum of extended states, breaks up into
the Wannier-Zeeman ladder -- a discrete set of equally spaced energy levels. We
calculate the dynamical structure factor in the one-soliton sector at finite
frequency, wave vector, and temperature, and find sharp peaks at frequencies
which are integer multiples of the Bloch frequency. We further calculate the
uniform magnetic susceptibility and find that it too exhibits peaks at the
Bloch frequency. We identify several candidate materials where these Bloch
oscillations should be observable, for example, via neutron scattering
measurements. For the particular compound CoCl_2.2H_2O we estimate the Bloch
amplitude to be on the order of a few lattice constants, and the Bloch
frequency on the order of 100 GHz for magnetic fields in the Tesla range and at

A new family of models with exact ground states connecting smoothly the S=1/2 dimer and S=1 Haldane phases of 1D spin chains
We investigate the isotropic two-leg S=1/2 ladder with general bilinear and
biquadratic exchange interactions between spins on neighboring rungs, and
determine the Hamiltonians which have a matrix product wavefunction as exact
ground state. We demonstrate that a smooth change of parameters leads one from
the S=1/2 dimer and Majumdar-Ghosh chains to the S=1 chain with biquadratic
exchange. This proves that these model systems are in the same phase. We also
present a new set of models of frustrated S=1/2 spin chains (including only

Impact of Tobacco-Related Health Warning Labels Across Socioeconomic, Race and Ethnic Groups: Results from a Randomized Web-Based Experiment
Background: The U.S. Family Smoking Prevention and Tobacco Control Act of 2009 requires updating of the existing textonly health warning labels on tobacco packaging with nine new warning statements accompanied by pictorial images. Survey and experimental research in the U.S. and other countries supports the effectiveness of pictorial health warning labels compared with text-only warnings for informing smokers about the risks of smoking and encouraging cessation. Yet very little research has examined differences in reactions to warning labels by race/ethnicity, education or income despite evidence that population subgroups may differ in their ability to process health information. The purpose of the present study was to evaluate the potential impact of pictorial warning labels compared with text-only labels among U.S. adult smokers from diverse racial/ethnic and socioeconomic subgroups.
Methods/Findings: Participants were adult smokers recruited from two online research panels (n = 3,371) into a web-based experimental study to view either the new pictorial warnings or text-only warnings. Participants viewed the labels and reported their reactions. Adjusted regression models demonstrated significantly stronger reactions for the pictorial condition for each outcome salience (b = 0.62, p,.001); perceived impact (b = 0.44, p,.001); credibility (OR = 1.41, 95% CI = 1.2221.62), and intention to quit (OR = 1.30, 95% CI = 1.1021.53). No significant results were found for interactions between condition and race/ethnicity, education, or income. The only exception concerned the intention to quit outcome, where the condition-by-education interaction was nearly significant (p = 0.057).
Conclusions: Findings suggest that the greater impact of the pictorial warning label compared to the text-only warning is consistent across diverse racial/ethnic and socioeconomic populations. Given their great reach, pictorial health warning labels may be one of the few tobacco control policies that have the potential to reduce communication inequalities across groups. Policies that establish strong pictorial warning labels on tobacco packaging may be instrumental in reducing the toll of the tobacco epidemic, particularly within vulnerable communities
Phase transition close to room temperature in BiFeO3 thin films
BiFeO3 (BFO) multiferroic oxide has a complex phase diagram that can be
mapped by appropriately substrate-induced strain in epitaxial films. By using
Raman spectroscopy, we conclusively show that films of the so-called
supertetragonal T-BFO phase, stabilized under compressive strain, displays a
reversible temperature-induced phase transition at about 100\circ, thus close
