The behavior of thermodynamic quantities around the Morin transition temperature was studied, and the latent heat of the Morin transition was calculated. The temperature dependence of the antiferromagnetic resonance frequency and the parallel and perpendicular critical spin-flop magnetic fields were calculated.     Calibration System with Cryogenically-Cooled Loads for CMB Polarization Detectors

    We present a novel system to calibrate millimeter-wave polarimeters for CMB polarization measurements. This technique is an extension of the conventional metal mirror rotation approach, however it employs cryogenically-cooled blackbody absorbers. The primary advantage of this system is that it can generate a slightly polarized signal (∼100\sim100 mK) in the laboratory; this is at a similar level to that measured by ground-based CMB polarization experiments observing a ∼\sim 10 K sky. It is important to reproduce the observing condition in the laboratry for reliable characterization of polarimeters before deployment. In this paper, we present the design and principle of the system, and demonstrate its use with a coherent-type polarimeter used for an actual CMB polarization experiment. This technique can also be applied to incoherent-type polarimeters and it is very promising for the next-generation CMB polarization experiments.Comment: 7 pages, 9 figures Submitted to RS

    Innovative Demodulation Scheme for Coherent Detectors in CMB Experiments

    We propose an innovative demodulation scheme for coherent detectors used in cosmic microwave background polarization experiments. Removal of non-white noise, e.g., narrow-band noise, in detectors is one of the key requirements for the experiments. A combination of modulation and demodulation is used to extract polarization signals as well as to suppress such noise. Traditional demodulation, which is based on the two- point numerical differentiation, works as a first-order high pass filter for the noise. The proposed demodulation is based on the three-point numerical differentiation. It works as a second-order high pass filter. By using a real detector, we confirmed significant improvements of suppression power for the narrow-band noise. We also found improvement of the noise floor.Comment: 3 pages, 4 figure

    CMB Lensing Power Spectrum Biases from Galaxies and Clusters using High-angular Resolution Temperature Maps

    The lensing power spectrum from cosmic microwave background (CMB) temperature maps will be measured with unprecedented precision with upcoming experiments, including upgrades to ACT and SPT. Achieving significant improvements in cosmological parameter constraints, such as percent level errors on sigma_8 and an uncertainty on the total neutrino mass of approximately 50 meV, requires percent level measurements of the CMB lensing power. This necessitates tight control of systematic biases. We study several types of biases to the temperature-based lensing reconstruction signal from foreground sources such as radio and infrared galaxies and the thermal Sunyaev-Zel'dovich effect from galaxy clusters. These foregrounds bias the CMB lensing signal due to their non-Gaussian nature. Using simulations as well as some analytical models we find that these sources can substantially impact the measured signal if left untreated. However, these biases can be brought to the percent level if one masks galaxies with fluxes at 150 GHz above 1 mJy and galaxy clusters with masses above M_vir = 10^14 M_sun. To achieve such percent level bias, we find that only modes up to a maximum multipole of l_max ~ 2500 should be included in the lensing reconstruction.     We report a Monte Carlo study of the classical antiferromagnetic Heisenberg model with easy axis anisotropy on the triangular lattice. Both the free energy cost for long wavelength spin waves as well as for the formation of free vortices are obtained from the spin stiffness and vorticity modulus respectively. Evidence for two distinct Kosterlitz-Thouless types of defect-mediated phase transitions at finite temperatures is presented.Comment: 8 pages, 10 figure

    Let uu be a solution of the Cauchy problem for the nonlinear parabolic equation ∂tu=Δu+F(x,t,u,∇u)inRN×(0,∞),u(x,0)=φ(x)inRN, \partial_t u=\Delta u+F(x,t,u,\nabla u) \quad in \quad{\bf R}^N\times(0,\infty), \quad u(x,0)=\varphi(x)\quad in \quad{\bf R}^N, and assume that the solution uu behaves like the Gauss kernel as t→∞t\to\infty. In this paper, under suitable assumptions of the reaction term FF and the initial function φ\varphi, we establish the method of obtaining higher order asymptotic expansions of the solution uu as t→∞t\to\infty. This paper is a generalization of our previous paper, and our arguments are applicable to the large class of nonlinear parabolic equations

    The actual and potential impacts of the CEFR on language education in Japan

    Abstract: This paper examines how the CEFR has been applied in language education in Japan demonstrating positive impacts as well as difficulties and potential problems. It can be said that the CEFR has had much influence and we deal with the three main applications: for score translation, to improve foreign language education in Japan (pedagogical use of CEFR), and the establishment of Japan standards of foreign language proficiency. In the first case there are several ongoing developments how can do descriptors are also used for the score interpretation of high-stake tests. The CEFR and in particular can do descriptors are used as assessment, goal-setting and reflective tools to develop and plan curricula and courses. A number of research projects have been conducted to further produce language proficiency standards in Japan using the CEFR as a reference point. This leads to one of the more serious issues regarding the implementation in the Japanese and other contexts: it could be the case that the more it is adapted to a specific context, the greater the possibility that the CEFR will lose its validity and the original language proficiency scales will be altered in an unhelpful way

    Large-scale Motions in the Perseus Galaxy Cluster

    By combining large-scale mosaics of ROSAT PSPC, XMM-Newton, and Suzaku X-ray observations, we present evidence for large-scale motions in the intracluster medium of the nearby, X-ray bright Perseus Cluster. These motions are suggested by several alternating and interleaved X-ray bright, low-temperature, low-entropy arcs located along the east-west axis, at radii ranging from ~10 kpc to over a Mpc. Thermodynamic features qualitatively similar to these have previously been observed in the centers of cool core clusters, and were successfully modeled as a consequence of the gas sloshing/swirling motions induced by minor mergers. Our observations indicate that such sloshing/swirling can extend out to larger radii than previously thought, on scales approaching the virial radius.Comment: 6 pages, 6 figures, accepted for publication in Ap

    Critical phase of a magnetic hard hexagon model on triangular lattice

    We introduce a magnetic hard hexagon model with two-body restrictions for configurations of hard hexagons and investigate its critical behavior by using Monte Carlo simulations and a finite size scaling method for discreate values of activity. It turns out that the restrictions bring about a critical phase which the usual hard hexagon model does not have. An upper and a lower critical value of the discrete activity for the critical phase of the newly proposed model are estimated as 4 and 6, respectively.Comment: 11 pages, 8 Postscript figures, uses revtex.st
