    Formal and Executable Specification of Random Waypoint Mobility Model Using Timed Coloured Petri Nets for WMN

    The wireless mesh network (WMN) is an emerging and cost-effective alternative paradigm for the next generation wireless networks in many diverse applications. In the performance evaluation of routing protocol for the WMN, it is essential that it should be evaluated under realistic conditions. The usefulness of specific mobility protocol can be determined by selection of mobility model. This paper introduces a coloured Petri nets (CP-nets) based formal model for implementation, simulation, and analysis of most widely used random waypoint (RWP) mobility model for WMNs. The formal semantics of hierarchical timed CP-nets allow us to investigate the terminating behavior of the transitions using state space analysis techniques. The proposed implementation improves the RWP mobility model by removing the “border effect” and resolves the “speed decay” problem

    Seismic damage mechanism of weak beam-column joint frames

    The use of old building design codes and improper execution of recent seismic design practices resulted in substandard and vulnerable reinforced concrete building stock, the majority of which is built with weak beam-column joint connections (i.e. joint panels having no transverse reinforcement and built in low strength concrete). In order to understand the seismic response and damage behavior of recent special moment resisting frame (SMRF) structures with the defect of weak beam-column joints, shake table tests were performed on two 1:3 reduced scale two storey and one bay RC frame models. Reference code design and weak beam-column joint frame models were subjected to unidirectional dynamic excitation of increasing intensities using the natural record of 1994 Northridge Earthquake. The input scaled excitation were applied from 5 % to 130 % of the maximum input peak ground acceleration record, to force the test models from elastic to inelastic stage and then to fully plastic incipient collapse stage. The weak beam-column frame experienced flexural cracking of the columns, longitudinal bar-slip in beam members, cover concrete spalling and severe damageability of the joint panels under multiple dynamic excitations. The deficient frame was able to resist only 40 % of the maximum acceleration record as compared to the code design frame, which was able to resist up to130 %. Based on the experimental observations, a drift-based damage scale was developed for different performance limits states that can be employed for the global performance assessment of deficient weak beam-column joint RC frames

    Prevalence and factors associated with irritable bowel syndrome among medical students of Karachi, Pakistan: A cross-sectional study

    BACKGROUND: Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) and its association with stress, has not been studied among university students in Pakistan. We investigated the prevalence and the pattern of anxiety related IBS symptoms among medical students of Karachi. FINDINGS: An observational case–control study was carried out at three medical colleges of Karachi, Pakistan. Random sampling was done on 360 medical students. Data was collected using validated tools “Rome III Criteria” and “Generalized Anxiety Disorder Questionnaire”. Participants with IBS were diagnosed on the criteria having experienced abdominal discomfort at least 2–3 days/month associated with high level of anxiety. The apparent prevalence of IBS was found to be 28.3%, with a predominance of 87 (85.29%) females (85.29%) over males (14.71%). The psychological symptoms of anxiety were encountered in 57 (55.8%) participants with IBS, among which males were 15.7% and females 84.2% respectively. CONCLUSION: Students who more frequently suffer with mental stress and anxiety are more associated with IBS

    Some morphometric relationship traits of Labeo bata (Hamilton, 1822) from Head Panjnad, Pakistan

    In the present research work, 127 Labeo bata having diverse body size ranging from 8.20 to 16.00 cm total length collected from Head Panjnad, Pakistan were used for the analysis of some morphometrics, that is, length-weight and length-length relationships. Condition factor and their relationships to investigate growth external morphometric characters, that is, total length (TL), standard length (SL), fork length (FL), head length (HL), head width (HW), body girth (BG), dorsal fin length (DFL), dorsal fin base (DFB), pectoral fin length (PtFL), pectoral fin base (PtFB), pelvic fin length (PvFL), anal fin length (AFL), caudal fin length (CFL) and caudal fin width (CFW) showed highly significant correlation with both cases, that is, increasing total length and body weight. A significant positive relationship was found between condition factor (K) and body weight, while no significant correlation was found in condition factor and total length.Key words: Morphometry, length-weight, length-length relationship, condition factor, Labeo bata

    Synthesis of Novel MOF-5 Based BiCoO3 Photocatalyst for the Treatment of Textile Wastewater

    Water pollution, having organic dyes, has lethal impacts on aquatic life and public health. To eliminate or degrade dyes, a metal-organic framework (MOF) based BiCoO3 semiconductor is considered a potential photocatalyst for the degradation of dyes. In this study, the MOF-5-based BiCoO3 (MOF-5/BiCoO3) composite was successfully synthesized using a one-pot hydrothermal process. Different analytical techniques were used to characterize MOF-5/BiCoO3 composite and pure MOF-5 samples. When compared to pure MOF-5, the experimental and characterization analysis showed that the MOF-5/BiCoO3 composite has better photocatalytic activity (99.6%) for the degradation of Congo-red (CR) dye due to the formation of heterostructure between MOF-5 and BiCoO3, which improve the separation of charge carriers. Meanwhile, the introduction of BiCoO3 with MOF-5 changes the surface morphology of MOF-5/BiCoO3 composite, increasing the surface area for CR adsorption and thus improving photocatalytic efficiency. Based on radical trapping experiments, the superoxide and hydroxyl radicals are dominant species in the CR degradation process. The reusability results demonstrate that MOF-5/BiCoO3 composite can be used effectively for up to five cycles, which makes the process more economical. Hence, MOF-5/BiCoO3 composite offers a promising approach to developing a highly effective, stable, efficient, economical, and sustainable photocatalyst for the dissociation of organic pollutants from wastewater streams
