Integrated Spacecraft Autonomous Attitude Control (ISAAC)
The purpose of this project is to give undergraduate students an opportunity to design, manufacture, and maintain a mock spacecraft to be used as a testbed for autonomous control systems. The spacecraft is based on two previous models: the JX-01, an undergraduate built testbed, and the Asteroid Free Flyer led by NASA engineer and ERAU doctoral student, Michael Dupuis. This model includes cable improvements, Inertial Measurement Units (IMU), Light Detection and Ranging (LIDAR), and object-based state estimation to improve control stabilization. When completed, the hardware built for this project will provide undergraduates and researchers a platform with which they can test control algorithms and spacecraft component design. The results gathered from the project thus far is the building and design and controls experience between the team. After completion we will be able to obtain a properly modeled control algorithm and test it against multiple conditions. The final goal of the spacecraft is to provide the capabilities and perform experiments to test multiple methods to mitigate the effects of internal and external forces such as fuel sloshing, solar radiation, debris collision, and CG change
Resolved structure in the nuclear region of the ultraluminous infrared galaxy Mrk 273
We have studied the core morphology of the ultraluminous infrared galaxy Mrk
273 by combining a high-resolution adaptive optics near-infrared image with an
optical image from the Hubble Space Telescope and interferometric radio
continuum data, all at spatial resolutions of 150 mas or better. The
near-infrared image reveals that the nucleus has two main components, both of
which have radio counterparts. The strongest component (N) shows very similar
extended structure in the radio and near-infrared. It has a flat radio spectrum
and is resolved into a double-lobed structure (Ne; Nw), with a separation of
90\pm5 mas (70 parsec). A similar structure is detected in the near-infrared.
We identify this component as the location of the active nucleus. The second
component (SW), strong in the near-infrared but relatively weak in the radio,
is located arcsecond to the southwest. We interpret this as an obscured
starburst region associated with the merger. The radio continuum images show a
third, strong, component (SE) which has previously been interpreted as a second
nucleus. However, it shows no associated optical or near-infrared emission,

The Consolidation of the White Southern Congressional Vote
This article explores the initial desertion and continued realignment of about one-sixth of the white voters in the South who, until 1994, stood by Democratic congressional candidates even as they voted for Republican presidential nominees. Prior to 1994, a sizable share of the white electorate distinguished between Democratic congressional and presidential candidates; since 1994 that distinction has been swept away. In 1992, a majority of white southern voters was casting their ballot for the Democratic House nominee; by 1994, the situation was reversed and 64 percent cast their ballot for the Republican. Virtually all categories of voters increased their support of Republican congressional candidates in 1994 and the following elections further cement GOP congressional support in the South. Subsequent elections are largely exercises in partisanship, as the congressional votes mirror party preferences. Republicans pull nearly all GOP identifiers, most independents, and a sizeable minority of Democratic identifiers. Democrats running for Congress no longer convince voters that they are different from their party’s presidential standard bearers—a group that has consistently been judged unacceptable to overwhelming proportions of the southern white electorate.Yeshttps://us.sagepub.com/en-us/nam/manuscript-submission-guideline

Sequence Similarity Network Reveals Common Ancestry of Multidomain Proteins
We address the problem of homology identification in complex multidomain families with varied domain architectures. The challenge is to distinguish sequence pairs that share common ancestry from pairs that share an inserted domain but are otherwise unrelated. This distinction is essential for accuracy in gene annotation, function prediction, and comparative genomics. There are two major obstacles to multidomain homology identification: lack of a formal definition and lack of curated benchmarks for evaluating the performance of new methods. We offer preliminary solutions to both problems: 1) an extension of the traditional model of homology to include domain insertions; and 2) a manually curated benchmark of well-studied families in mouse and human. We further present Neighborhood Correlation, a novel method that exploits the local structure of the sequence similarity network to identify homologs with great accuracy based on the observation that gene duplication and domain shuffling leave distinct patterns in the sequence similarity network. In a rigorous, empirical comparison using our curated data, Neighborhood Correlation outperforms sequence similarity, alignment length, and domain architecture comparison. Neighborhood Correlation is well suited for automated, genome-scale analyses. It is easy to compute, does not require explicit knowledge of domain architecture, and classifies both single and multidomain homologs with high accuracy. Homolog predictions obtained with our method, as well as our manually curated benchmark and a web-based visualization tool for exploratory analysis of the network neighborhood structure, are available at http://www.neighborhoodcorrelation.org. Our work represents a departure from the prevailing view that the concept of homology cannot be applied to genes that have undergone domain shuffling. In contrast to current approaches that either focus on the homology of individual domains or consider only families with identical domain architectures, we show that homology can be rationally defined for multidomain families with diverse architectures by considering the genomic context of the genes that encode them. Our study demonstrates the utility of mining network structure for evolutionary information, suggesting this is a fertile approach for investigating evolutionary processes in the post-genomic era
Executive function and IQ predict mathematical and attention problems in very preterm children
Objective of this study was to examine the impact of executive function (EF) on mathematical and attention problems in very preterm (gestational age ≤ 30 weeks) children. Participants were 200 very preterm (mean age 8.2 ± 2.5 years) and 230 term children (mean age 8.3 ± 2.3 years) without severe disabilities, born between 1996 and 2004. EFs assessed included verbal fluency, verbal working memory, visuospatial span, planning, and impulse control. Mathematics was assessed with the Dutch Pupil Monitoring System and parents and teachers rated attention problems using standardized behavior questionnaires.
