Disability, Gender, and Employment Relationships in Africa: The Case of Ghana

    Get PDF
The exploratory quantitative study sought to develop an understanding about the relationships among disability, gender and employment in Northern Ghana. A total of 110 individuals with disabilities (20–60 years) from various disability groups participated in the study. The results indicate that many persons with disabilities are unemployed, the majority being women. Discrimination is cited as the greatest barrier to the employment of persons with disabilities, particularly women. The majority of persons with disabilities, typically women, live in poverty; given that some are unemployed and those who are employed worked mostly in marginal, seasonal and menial jobs. Persons with disabilities also experience several challenges on the job, including negative perceptions about their capabilities, discrimination and exclusion, irrespective of the employment sector and disability type. Educational interventions such as workshops, documenting and showcasing success stories of persons with disabilities could be helpful to reduce negative perceptions about their capabilities as well as discrimination against them. Government intervention to support persons with disabilities with start-up capital and funding for formal education is also recommended as these two elements were identified respectively as barriers to self-employment and employment in the public/private sectors. Government interventions to create educational opportunities for persons with disabilities are essential given that lower educational attainment affect their employment

    Get PDF
Noise in a server room can have a major impact on the performance and well-being of the occupants. Sound level and low frequency noise are considered factors that influence the hearing ability of workers. This thesis is an investigation of low-frequency noise in server rooms. We conducted the field study in a server room for a large financial institution. Some employees in this study indicated that they experienced headaches from the noise and requested an analysis of the sound to determine if there were any potential adverse health effects. Attributes of the noise were investigated by evaluating the sound pressure and frequency. Potential health effects were researched by examining relevent literature on the impact of noise that is generated in server rooms. The role of ergonomists to investigate these occurrences is crucial. Due to the occupational impact of this emerging technology, a growing concern has arisen to resolve this issue

The aim of this study was to determine the effects of transformational leadership and its components on work engagement among hospital nurses. There are a few set of researches that have focused on the effects of transformational leadership on work engagement in nurses. A descriptive, correlational, cross-sectional design was used. In this study, 240 nurses have been chosen by stratified random sampling method which filled related self-reported scales include multifactor leadership questionnaire (MLQ) and work engagement scale. Data analysis has been exerted according to the statistical method of simple and multiple correlation coefficients. Findings indicated that the effect of this type of leadership on work engagement and its facets is positive and significant. In addition, the research illustrates that transformational leaders transfer their enthusiasm and high power to their subordinates by the way of modeling. This manner can increase the power as a component of work engagement in workers. Idealized influence among these leaders can result in forming a specific belief among employees toward those leaders and leaders can easily transmit their inspirational motivation to them. Consequently, it leads to make a positive vision by which, and by setting high standards, challenges the employees and establishes zeal along with optimism for attaining success in works. regarding to the results we will expand leadership and work engagement literature in hospital nurses. Also, we conclude with theoretical and practical implications and propose a clear horizon for future researches

Computed tomography (CT) has been regarded as the method of choice for detecting the presence, site and cause of gastrointestinal tract perforation. In addition to determining the presence of perforation, CT can also localise the perforation size and demonstrate direct and indirect findings relative to the perforation. In this case study, we report the CT results in a patient with perforated duodenal ulcer associated with anterior abdominal abscess, and highlight the diagnostic value of CT imaging

This study investigated the effectiveness of translated English videos into Arabic on enhancing Al-Azhar University-Gaza (AUG) English majors' listening comprehension skills. To achieve the aim of the study, the researchers adopted a quasi-experimental research design which focused on enhancing three main listening skills: getting the main idea, getting details and note taking skills by using translated English videos into Arabic. Twenty female English majors who were enrolled in a listening course during the first semester of the academic year 2016/2017 were the one group sample of the study. They attended the ten classes of the experiment and did a pre and post listening comprehension test. To analyze the data which the tool of the study provided, the researchers used Wilcoxon Test to compare the participants’ performance in the listening comprehension pre and posttests and Eta Square to measure the effect size of the study strategy. By the end of the semester, the sample of the study completed a listening comprehension test which consisted of (20) questions focused on getting the main idea, getting details and note taking skills. Results revealed that translated English videos into Arabic have a large effect on enhancing AUG English majors' listening comprehension skills.  Article visualizations

Ochrobactrum anthropi induced retropharyngeal abscess with mediastinal extension complicating airway obstruction: A case report.

    Get PDF
Retropharyngeal abscess with involvement of mediastinal abscess represents an uncommon complication of upper respiratory tract infections. We report a case presenting with a large retropharyngeal abscess with airway obstruction as the primary presenting symptom. Contrast-enhanced CT showed a large retropharyngeal abscess in the neck with extension to the upper and posterior mediastinal spaces. The abscess was surgically excised with 200 cc pus drained from the neck and mediastinal regions. We describe this case to assist physicians in making the difficult diagnosis when confronting a patient with airway obstruction, as early recognition of retropharyngeal abscess permits emergent airway management
