Cs-135 - Ba-135: A new cosmochronometric constraint on the origin of the Earth and the astrophysical site of the origin of the solar system
It is argued that if Cs-135 was indeed present in the early solar system at the level inferred from evidence presented here, then two major conclusions follow. (1) A supernova contributed newly synthesized r-process matter into the protosolar reservoir within approx. 5 Ma of the Cs/Ba fractionation recorded in LEW 86010; (2) The strong Cs depletion in the bulk Earth reservoir (Cs-133/Ba-135 approx. 0.1) took place very early in solar system history. If this volatile loss was pre-accretionary, then the accretionary chronology of the Earth is not constrained. However, if it is a consequence of accretion, then the very tight time constraint of approx. less than 5 Ma (rel. to LEW 86010) is obtained for accretion of most of the Earth's mass
Experimental test of airplane boarding methods
We report the results of an experimental comparison of different airplane
boarding methods. This test was conducted in a mock 757 fuselage, located on a
Southern California soundstage, with 12 rows of six seats and a single aisle.
Five methods were tested using 72 passengers of various ages. We found a
significant reduction in the boarding times of optimized methods over
traditional methods. These improved methods, if properly implemented, could

Nd-142/Nd-144 in SNCs and early differentiation of a heterogeneous Martian mantle
Sm/Nd correlated variations in Nd-142/Nd-144 have been observed for mineral phases of achondrites from decay of live Sm-146 in the early solar system. Crystallization ages of shergottites-nakhlites-Chassigny (SNC) meteorites are less than or = 1.3 Ga, so variations of Nd-142/Nd-144 among mineral phases of the SNC's are not expected. However, if SNC's were derived from source reservoirs of differing Sm/Nd ratios, established while Sm-146 was still alive, and which remained isolated except for magma extraction, then variations in Nd-142/Nd-144 would exist among individual SNC meteorites. Rb-Sr and U-Pb isotopic data for the shergottites imply differentiation of their parent planet approximately 4.6 Ga ago. The confirmation of the conclusion that the nakhlites and shergottites were derived from different source regions, and that, consequently, the shergottite parent body (SPB) mantle was heterogeneous is presented

Rb-Sr and Sm-Nd Study of Asuka 881394: Evidence of "Late" Metamorphism
The Asuka 881394 achondrite contains fossil Al-26 and Mn-53 [1,2,3] and has a Pb-207/Pb-206 age of 4566.5 plus or minus 0.2 Ma [3], the oldest for an achondrite. Preliminary results showed initial Sm-146/Sm-144 = (7.4 plus or minus 1.2) x 10(exp -3), indicative of an ancient age, but Rb-87 - Sr-87 and Sm-147 - Nd-143 ages of 4370 plus or minus 60 and 4490 plus or minus 20 Ma, resp. [1], were younger than expected from the presence of short-lived nuclides. We revisit the Rb-Sr and Sm-Nd chronology of A881394 in an attempt to establish whether late metamorphism led to inconsistency in its apparent ages
The azimuth structure of nuclear collisions -- I
We describe azimuth structure commonly associated with elliptic and directed
flow in the context of 2D angular autocorrelations for the purpose of precise
separation of so-called nonflow (mainly minijets) from flow. We extend the
Fourier-transform description of azimuth structure to include power spectra and
autocorrelations related by the Wiener-Khintchine theorem. We analyze several
examples of conventional flow analysis in that context and question the
relevance of reaction plane estimation to flow analysis. We introduce the 2D
angular autocorrelation with examples from data analysis and describe a
simulation exercise which demonstrates precise separation of flow and nonflow
using the 2D autocorrelation method. We show that an alternative correlation
measure based on Pearson's normalized covariance provides a more intuitive
measure of azimuth structure.Comment: 27 pages, 12 figure
A nanomechanical resonator shuttling single electrons at radio frequencies
We observe transport of electrons through a metallic island on the tip of a
nanomechanical pendulum. The resulting tunneling current shows distinct
features corresponding to the discrete mechanical eigenfrequencies of the
pendulum. We report on measurements covering the temperature range from 300 K
down to 4.2 K. We explain the I-V curve, which differs from previous
theoretical predictions, with model calculations based on a Master equation

Basaltic Clasts in Y-86032 Feldspathic Lunar Meteorite: Ancient Volcanism far from the Procellarum Kreep Terrane
Lunar meteorite, Y-86032 is a fragmental or regolith breccia enriched in Al2O3 (28-31 wt%) and having very low concentrations of REEs and Th, U [e.g., 1]. Nyquist et al. [2] suggested that Y- 86032 contains a variety of lithologies not represented by the Apollo samples. They found clasts with old Ar-Ar ages and an ancient Sm-Nd age, and negative Nd indicating a direct link to the primordial magma ocean. Importantly, the final lithification of the Y-86032 breccia was likely >3.8-4.1 Ga ago. Therefore, any lithic components in the breccia formed prior to 3.8 Ga, and lithic components in breccia clasts in the parent breccia formed even earlier. Here we report textures and mineralogy of basaltic and gabbroic clasts in Y- 86032 to better understand the nature of ancient lunar volcanism far from the Procellarum KREEP Terrain (PKT) [3] and the central nearside
The Fermi Surface Effect on Magnetic Interlayer Coupling
The oscillating magnetic interlayer coupling of Fe over spacer layers
consisting of CuPd alloys is investigated by first principles
density functional theory. The amplitude, period and phase of the coupling, as
well as the disorder-induced decay, are analyzed in detail and the consistency
to the Ruderman-Kittel-Kasuya-Yoshida (RKKY) theory is discussed. For the first
time an effect of the Fermi surface nesting strength on the amplitude is
established from first principles calculations. An unexpected variation of the
phase and disorder-induced decay is obtained and the results are discussed in
terms of asymptotics
