The origin of defects induced in ultra-pure germanium by Electron Beam Deposition
The creation of point defects in the crystal lattices of various
semiconductors by subthreshold events has been reported on by a number of
groups. These observations have been made in great detail using sensitive
electrical techniques but there is still much that needs to be clarified.
Experiments using Ge and Si were performed that demonstrate that energetic
particles, the products of collisions in the electron beam, were responsible
for the majority of electron-beam deposition (EBD) induced defects in a
two-step energy transfer process. Lowering the number of collisions of these
energetic particles with the semiconductor during metal deposition was
accomplished using a combination of static shields and superior vacuum
resulting in devices with defect concentrations lower than cm, the measurement limit of our deep level transient
spectroscopy (DLTS) system. High energy electrons and photons that samples are
typically exposed to were not influenced by the shields as most of these
particles originate at the metal target thus eliminating these particles as
possible damage causing agents. It remains unclear how packets of energy that
can sometimes be as small of 2eV travel up to a m into the material while
still retaining enough energy, that is, in the order of 1eV, to cause changes
in the crystal. The manipulation of this defect causing phenomenon may hold the
key to developing defect free material for future applications.Comment: 18 pages, 9 figure
Removal of ecotoxicity of 17α-ethinylestradiol using TAML/peroxide water treatment
17α -ethinylestradiol (EE2), a synthetic oestrogen in oral contraceptives, is one of many pharmaceuticals found in inland waterways worldwide as a result of human consumption and excretion into wastewater treatment systems. At low parts per trillion (ppt), EE2 induces feminisation of male fish, diminishing reproductive success and causing fish population collapse. Intended water quality standards for EE2 set a much needed global precedent. Ozone and activated carbon provide effective wastewater treatments, but their energy intensities and capital/operating costs are formidable barriers to adoption. Here we describe the technical and environmental performance of a fast- developing contender for mitigation of EE2 contamination of wastewater based upon smallmolecule, full-functional peroxidase enzyme replicas called “TAML activators”. From neutral to basic pH, TAML activators with H2O2 efficiently degrade EE2 in pure lab water, municipal effluents and
EE2-spiked synthetic urine. TAML/H2O2 treatment curtails estrogenicity in vitro and substantially diminishes fish feminization in vivo. Our results provide a starting point for a future process in which tens of thousands of tonnes of wastewater could be treated per kilogram of catalyst. We suggest TAML/H2O2 is a worthy candidate for exploration as an environmentally compatible, versatile, method for removing EE2 and other pharmaceuticals from municipal wastewaters.Heinz Endowments, the Swiss National Science Foundation, the Steinbrenner Institute for a Steinbrenner

A time-marching scheme for analyzing transient scattering from nonplanar doubly periodic structures
A novel marching-on-time (MOT) based scheme for solving a time domain integral equation (TDIE) was discussed. It was observed that the scheme was pertinent to the analysis of plane wave scattering from nonplanar doubly periodic structures with unit cells comprising perfect electrically conducting (PEC) elements and inhomogeneous dielectric volumes. This scheme aimed at rendering the solver applicable to the nonplanar structures. The resulted scheme was applied without any difficulty to nonplanar doubly periodic structures comprising PEC and sculptured dielectric substrates
The central image of a gravitationally lensed quasar
A galaxy can act as a gravitational lens, producing multiple images of a
background object. Theory predicts there should be an odd number of images but,
paradoxically, almost all observed lenses have 2 or 4 images. The missing image
should be faint and appear near the galaxy's center. These ``central images''
have long been sought as probes of galactic cores too distant to resolve with
ordinary observations. There are five candidates, but in one case the third
image is not necessarily a central image, and in the others, the central
component might be a foreground source rather than a lensed image. Here we
report the most secure identification of a central image, based on radio
observations of PMN J1632-0033, one of the latter candidates. Lens models
incorporating the central image show that the mass of the lens galaxy's central
black hole is less than 2 x 10^8 M_sun, and the galaxy's surface density at the
location of the central image is more than 20,000 M_sun per square parsec, in
agreement with expectations based on observations of galaxies hundreds of times
closer to the Earth.Comment: Nature, in press [7 pp, 2 figs]. Standard media embargo applies

Two-Way Minimization: A Novel Treatment Allocation Method for Small Trials
Randomization is a hallmark of clinical trials. If a trial entails very few subjects and has many prognostic factors (or many factor levels) to be balanced, minimization is a more efficient method to achieve balance than a simple randomization. We propose a novel minimization method, the ‘two-way minimization’. The method separately calculates the ‘imbalance in the total numbers of subjects’ and the ‘imbalance in the distributions of prognostic factors’. And then to allocate a subject, it chooses—by probability—to minimize either one of these two aspects of imbalances. As such, it is a method that is both treatment-adaptive and covariate-adaptive. We perform Monte-Carlo simulations to examine its statistical properties. The two-way minimization (with proper regression adjustment of the force-balanced prognostic factors) has the correct type I error rates. It also produces point estimates that are unbiased and variance estimates that are accurate. When there are important prognostic factors to be balanced in the study, the method achieves the highest power and the smallest variance among randomization methods that are resistant to selection bias. The allocation can be done in real time and the subsequent data analysis is straightforward. The two-way minimization is recommended to balance prognostic factors in small trials
Climate change and the long-term viability of the World’s busiest heavy haul ice road
Climate models project that the northern high latitudes will warm at a rate in excess of the global mean. This will pose severe problems for Arctic and sub-Arctic infrastructure dependent on maintaining low temperatures for structural integrity. This is the case for the economically important Tibbitt to Contwoyto Winter Road (TCWR)—the world’s busiest heavy haul ice road, spanning 400 km across mostly frozen lakes within the Northwest Territories of Canada. In this study, future climate scenarios are developed for the region using statistical downscaling methods. In addition, changes in lake ice thickness are projected based on historical relationships between measured ice thickness and air temperatures. These projections are used to infer the theoretical operational dates of the TCWR based on weight limits for trucks on the ice. Results across three climate models driven by four RCPs reveal a considerable warming trend over the coming decades. Projected changes in ice thickness reveal a trend towards thinner lake ice and a reduced time window when lake ice is at sufficient thickness to support trucks on the ice road, driven by increasing future temperatures. Given the uncertainties inherent in climate modelling and the resultant projections, caution should be exercised in interpreting the magnitude of these scenarios. More certain is the direction of change, with a clear trend towards winter warming that will reduce the operation time window of the TCWR. This illustrates the need for planners and policymakers to consider future changes in climate when planning annual haulage along the TCWR
Carbon Nanotubes Enhance Cytotoxicity Mediated by Human Lymphocytes In Vitro
With the expansion of the potential applications of carbon nanotubes (CNT) in biomedical fields, the toxicity and biocompatibility of CNT have become issues of growing concern. Since the immune system often mediates tissue damage during pathogenesis, it is important to explore whether CNT can trigger cytotoxicity through affecting the immune functions. In the current study, we evaluated the influence of CNT on the cytotoxicity mediated by human lymphocytes in vitro. The results showed that while CNT at low concentrations (0.001 to 0.1 µg/ml) did not cause obvious cell death or apoptosis directly, it enhanced lymphocyte-mediated cytotoxicity against multiple human cell lines. In addition, CNT increased the secretion of IFN-γ and TNF-α by the lymphocytes. CNT also upregulated the NF-κB expression in lymphocytes, and the blockage of the NF-κB pathway reduced the lymphocyte-mediated cytotoxicity triggered by CNT. These results suggest that CNT at lower concentrations may prospectively initiate an indirect cytotoxicity through affecting the function of lymphocytes
Prospects for terahertz imaging the human skin cancer with the help of gold-nanoparticles-based terahertz-to-infrared converter
The design is suggested, and possible operation parameters are discussed, of
an instrument to inspect a skin cancer tumour in the terahertz (THz) range,
transferring the image into the infrared (IR) and making it visible with the
help of standard IR camera. The central element of the device is the THz-to-IR
converter, a Teflon or silicon film matrix with embedded 8.5 nm diameter gold
nanoparticles. The use of external THz source for irradiating the biological
tissue sample is presumed. The converter's temporal characteristics enable its
performance in a real-time scale. The details of design suited for the
operation in transmission mode (in vitro) or on the human skin in reflection
mode {in vivo) are specified.Comment: To be published in the proceedings of the FANEM2018 workshop - Minsk,
