    Regulatory T and B cells in asthmatic women: variations from pregnancy to postpartum Treg and Breg: pregnancy to postpartum

    BACKGROUND: Allergic asthma and rhinitis are common in pregnancy. The immune mechanisms underlying the effects of pregnancy in asthma and vice-versa are not completely understood. OBJECTIVES: This work aimed to study the evolution of regulatory T and B cells in asthmatic pregnant women, from late pregnancy till postpartum. METHODS: Four groups of women were enrolled for this study: third trimester pregnant women, asthmatic (n=24) and healthy (n=43), and non-pregnant women, asthmatic (n=33) and healthy (n=35). Pregnant women were also evaluated postpartum (>6 weeks after delivery). Blood samples were taken from each woman and flow cytometry was used to characterize circulating regulatory T and B cells. Foxp3 expression was assessed within CD4DimCD25Hi regulatory T cells. RESULTS: In asthmatic and healthy pregnant women, regulatory T cells did not oscillate significantly from pregnancy to postpartum, but CD24HiCD38Hi regulatory B cells, decreased in pregnancy, rose significantly postpartum. Foxp3 expression in regulatory T cells was also impaired during pregnancy in asthmatic and healthy pregnant women, recovering postpartum. Nevertheless, asthmatic pregnant women presented higher Foxp3 expression than healthy pregnant women (p=0.007), probably due to the use of control medication. CONCLUSIONS: Women with controlled asthma present variations in regulatory cell subsets during pregnancy and postpartum. The similar pattern observed for Foxp3 expression and CD24HiCD38Hi regulatory B cells during this period corroborates the interaction established between regulatory T and B cells in immune responses. Considering the immunomodulatory potential of these immune mediators, more studies are needed to evaluate their relation with asthma and rhinitis complications in pregnancy

    Qualitative Approach to Semi-Classical Loop Quantum Cosmology

    Recently the mechanism was found which allows avoidance of the cosmological singularity within the semi-classical formulation of Loop Quantum Gravity. Numerical studies show that the presence of self-interaction potential of the scalar field allows generation of initial conditions for successful slow-roll inflation. In this paper qualitative analysis of dynamical system, corresponding to cosmological equations of Loop Quantum Gravity is performed. The conclusion on singularity avoidance in positively curved cosmological models is confirmed. Two cases are considered, the massless (with flat potential) and massive scalar field. Explanation of initial conditions generation for inflation in models with massive scalar field is given.     Valence and magnetic ordering in intermediate valence compounds : TmSe versus SmB6

    The intermediate valent systems TmSe and SmB6 have been investigated up to 16 and 18 GPa by ac microcalorimetry with a pressure (p) tuning realized in situ at low temperature. For TmSe, the transition from an antiferromagnetic insulator for p<3 GPa to an antiferromagnetic metal at higher pressure has been confirmed. A drastic change in the p variation of the Neel temperature (Tn) is observed at 3 GPa. In the metallic phase (p>3 GPa), Tn is found to increase linearly with p. A similar linear p increase of Tn is observed for the quasitrivalent compound TmS which is at ambiant pressure equivalent to TmSe at p=7 GPa. In the case of SmB6 long range magnetism has been detected above p=8 GPa, i.e. at a pressure slightly higher than the pressure of the insulator to metal transition. However a homogeneous magnetic phase occurs only above 10 GPa. The magnetic and electronic properties are related to the renormalization of the 4f wavefunction either to the divalent or the trivalent configurations. As observed in SmS, long range magnetism in SmB6 occurs already far below the pressure where a trivalent Sm3+ state will be reached. It seems possible, to describe roughly the physical properties of the intermediate valence equilibrium by assuming formulas for the Kondo lattice temperature depending on the valence configuration.     Phase lag in epidemics on a network of cities

    We study the synchronisation and phase-lag of fluctuations in the number of infected individuals in a network of cities between which individuals commute. The frequency and amplitude of these oscillations is known to be very well captured by the van Kampen system-size expansion, and we use this approximation to compute the complex coherence function that describes their correlation. We find that, if the infection rate differs from city to city and the coupling between them is not too strong, these oscillations are synchronised with a well defined phase lag between cities. The analytic description of the effect is shown to be in good agreement with the results of stochastic simulations for realistic population sizes.Comment: 10 pages, 6 figure

    Automated android malware detection using user feedback

    The widespread usage of mobile devices and their seamless adaptation to each user’s needs through useful applications (apps) makes them a prime target for malware developers. Malware is software built to harm the user, e.g., to access sensitive user data, such as banking details, or to hold data hostage and block user access. These apps are distributed in marketplaces that host millions and therefore have their forms of automated malware detection in place to deter malware developers and keep their app store (and reputation) trustworthy. Nevertheless, a non-negligible number of apps can bypass these detectors and remain available in the marketplace for any user to download and install on their device. Current malware detection strategies rely on using static or dynamic app extracted features (or a combination of both) to scale the detection and cover the growing number of apps submitted to the marketplace. In this paper, the main focus is on the apps that bypass the malware detectors and stay in the marketplace long enough to receive user feedback. This paper uses real-world data provided by an app store. The quantitative ratings and potential alert flags assigned to the apps by the users were used as features to train machine learning classifiers that successfully classify malware that evaded previous detection attempts.     Comparação de diferentes procedimentos de estimulação elétrica neuromuscular utilizados no tratamento da incontinência urinária de esforço feminina: ensaio clínico randomizado

    BACKGROUND: Neuromuscular electrical stimulation (NMES) is widely treatment for stress urinary incontinence (SUI) but there is no consensus in literature regarding the most effective treatment parameters. OBJECTIVE: To compare two NMESintra-vaginal protocols for the treatment of SUI in women. METHODS: The study included 20 volunteers with an average age of 55.55±6.51 years and with the clinical diagnosis of SUI. Volunteers were randomly divided into two groups: group 1 (G1) received NMES with medium-frequency current and group 2 (G2) received NMES with low-frequency current. Functional assessments of pelvic floor muscles (PFM) were performed by perineometry. The severity of signs and symptoms were objectively evaluated using the 1 hour pad test and subjectively evaluated using a visual analog scale that measured the discomfort caused by the SUI. Shapiro-Wilk test was used to analyze data normality, and the Friedman test was used to analyze nonparametric data. For analysis of symptoms related to SUI the Fisher exact test and the Mann-Whitney test were used. Significance level of 5% was set for all data analysis. RESULTS: No significant differences (p&gt;0.05) were found between groups for any of the variable assessed. The within group analysis of initial and final evaluations (after NMES) demonstrated significant differences (p<0.05) in amount of urine lost, the discomfort caused by urinary incontinence and perineal pressure for both treatment groups. CONCLUSION: The two NMES protocols applied were equally effective in the treatment of SUI.CONTEXTUALIZAÇÃO: A estimulação elétrica neuromuscular (EENM) é amplamente utilizada no tratamento da incontinência urinária de esforço (IUE), no entanto não há consenso na literatura sobre os parâmetros de tratamento mais eficazes. OBJETIVO: Avaliar os procedimentos de EENM intravaginal no tratamento de mulheres com IUE. MÉTODOS: Participaram do estudo 20 voluntárias com idade média de 55,55±6,51 anos, com diagnóstico clínico de IUE. As voluntárias foram divididas aleatoriamente em dois grupos: grupo 1 (G1), que recebeu EENM com corrente de média frequência, e grupo 2 (G2), com corrente de baixa frequência. A avaliação funcional dos músculos do assoalho pélvico (MAP) foi realizada por meio de perineometria, e a severidade dos sinais e sintomas da IUE foi avaliada, objetivamente, pelo pad test de uma hora e, subjetivamente, pela Escala Visual Analógica (EVA), que mediu o desconforto causado pela incontinência. Para a análise de normalidade dos dados, utilizou-se o teste Shapiro-Wilk, seguido do teste de Friedman para dados não paramétricos. Para a análise dos sintomas relacionados à IUE, usaram-se os testes Exato de Fisher e Mann-Whitney. Em todas as análises, considerou-se o nível de significância de 5%. RESULTADOS: Não houve diferença significativa (p&gt;0,05) entre os grupos em nenhuma variável avaliada. Na comparação intragrupos das avaliações iniciais e finais (após EENM), houve diferença significativa (p<0,05) na quantidade de urina perdida, no desconforto causado pela incontinência urinária e na pressão perineal. CONCLUSÃO: Os procedimentos de EENM utilizados neste estudo foram igualmente eficazes no tratamento da IUE
