    Effects of curvature on hydrothermal waves instability of radial thermocapillary flows

This flow occurs in a thin liquid layer with a disk shape when a radial temperature gradient is applied along the horizontal free surface. Besides the aspect ratio, a second parameter related to the local curvature is introduced to describe completely the geometrical effects. We recover classical hydrothermal waves as predicted by Smith and Davis [1] but the properties of these waves are shown to evolve with the curvature parameter, thus leading to a non uniform pattern over the cell. Moreover, it is shown that the problem is not invariant with respect to the exchange of the hot and cold sides.Nous étudions la stabilité linéaire d'un écoulement thermocapillaire en géométrie cylindrique étendue. Un tel écoulement est produit dans un disque de fluide dont la surface libre horizontale est soumise à un gradient de température purement radial. Outre le rapport d'aspect, un second paramètre lié à la courbure locale est introduit pour caractériser la géométrie du problème. L'instabilité en ondes hydrothermales prédite par [1] est retrouvée mais les propriétés des ondes sont altérées par la courbure locale ce qui explique l'existence de structures non uniformes. La dissymétrie du problème vis-à-vis d'une inversion du gradient de température est aussi mise en évidence

    On possible superconductivity in the doped ladder compound La_(1-x)Sr_xCuO_2.5

    LaCuO_2.5 is a system of coupled, two-chain, cuprate ladders which may be doped systematically by Sr substitution. Motivated by the recent synthesis of single crystals, we investigate theoretically the possibility of superconductivity in this compound. We use a model of spin fluctuation-mediated superconductivity, where the pairing potential is strongly peaked at \pi in the ladder direction. We solve the coupled gap equations on the bonding and antibonding ladder bands to find superconducting solutions across the range of doping, and discuss their relevance to the real material.Comment: RevTex, 4 pages, 7 figure

    Binary continuous random networks

    Many properties of disordered materials can be understood by looking at idealized structural models, in which the strain is as small as is possible in the absence of long-range order. For covalent amorphous semiconductors and glasses, such an idealized structural model, the continuous-random network, was introduced 70 years ago by Zachariasen. In this model, each atom is placed in a crystal-like local environment, with perfect coordination and chemical ordering, yet longer-range order is nonexistent. Defects, such as missing or added bonds, or chemical mismatches, however, are not accounted for. In this paper we explore under which conditions the idealized CRN model without defects captures the properties of the material, and under which conditions defects are an inherent part of the idealized model. We find that the density of defects in tetrahedral networks does not vary smoothly with variations in the interaction strengths, but jumps from close-to-zero to a finite density. Consequently, in certain materials, defects do not play a role except for being thermodynamical excitations, whereas in others they are a fundamental ingredient of the ideal structure.Comment: Article in honor of Mike Thorpe's 60th birthday (to appear in J.     The Effects of Negative Legacies on the Adjustment of Parentally Bereaved Children and Adolescents

    This is a report of a qualitative analysis of a sample of bereaved families in which one parent died and in which children scored in the clinical range on the Child Behavior Check List. The purpose of this analysis was to learn more about the lives of these children. They were considered to be at risk of developing emotional and behavioral problems associated with the death. We discovered that many of these “high risk” children had a continuing bond with the deceased that was primarily negative and troubling for them in contrast to a comparison group of children not at risk from the same study. Five types of legacies, not mutually exclusive, were identified: health related, role related, personal qualities, legacy of blame, and an emotional legacy. Coping behavior on the part of the surviving parent seemed to make a difference in whether or not a legacy was experienced as negative

    Boundary conditions associated with the Painlev\'e III' and V evaluations of some random matrix averages

    In a previous work a random matrix average for the Laguerre unitary ensemble, generalising the generating function for the probability that an interval (0,s) (0,s) at the hard edge contains k k eigenvalues, was evaluated in terms of a Painlev\'e V transcendent in σ \sigma -form. However the boundary conditions for the corresponding differential equation were not specified for the full parameter space. Here this task is accomplished in general, and the obtained functional form is compared against the most general small s s behaviour of the Painlev\'e V equation in σ \sigma -form known from the work of Jimbo. An analogous study is carried out for the the hard edge scaling limit of the random matrix average, which we have previously evaluated in terms of a Painlev\'e \IIId transcendent in σ \sigma -form. An application of the latter result is given to the rapid evaluation of a Hankel determinant appearing in a recent work of Conrey, Rubinstein and Snaith relating to the derivative of the Riemann zeta function

    Interaction between static holes in a quantum dimer model on the kagome lattice

    A quantum dimer model (QDM) on the kagome lattice with an extensive ground-state entropy was recently introduced [Phys. Rev. B 67, 214413 (2003)]. The ground-state energy of this QDM in presence of one and two static holes is investigated by means of exact diagonalizations on lattices containing up to 144 kagome sites. The interaction energy between the holes (at distances up to 7 lattice spacings) is evaluated and the results show no indication of confinement at large hole separations.Comment: 6 pages, 3 figures.     Animal reactivity to camera traps and its effects on abundance estimate using distance sampling in the Taï National Park, Côte d’Ivoire

    The use of camera traps (CTs) has become an increasingly popular method of studying wildlife, as CTs are able to detect rare, nocturnal, and elusive species in remote and difficult-to-access areas. It thus makes them suited to estimate animal density and abundance, identify activity patterns and new behaviours of animals. However, animals can react when they see the CTs and this can lead to bias in the animal population estimates. While CTs may provide many advantages, an improved understanding of their impacts on individual’s behaviour is necessary to avoid erroneous density estimates. Yet, the impact of CTs on detected individuals, such as human odour near the device and the environment, or the infrared illumination, has received relatively little attention. To date, there is no clear procedure to remove this potential bias. Here, we use camera trap distance sampling (CTDS) to (1) quantify the bias resulting from the different animal responses to the CTs when determining animal density and abundance, and (2) test if olfactory, visual and auditory signals have an influence on the animals’ reaction to CTs. Between March 2019 and March 2020, we deployed CTs at 267 locations distributed systematically over the entire Taï National Park. We obtained 58,947 videos from which we analysed four medium- to-large-bodied species (Maxwell’s duiker (Philantomba maxwellii), Jentink’s duiker (Cephalophus jentinki), pygmy hippopotamus (Choeropsis liberiensis) and Western chimpanzee (Pan troglodytes verus)) displaying different behaviours towards the CTs. We then established species-specific ethograms describing the behavioural responses to the CTs. Using these species-specific responses, we observed that the Maxwell’s duiker reacted weakly to CTs (about 0.11% of the distance data), contrary to Jentink’s duiker, pygmy hippopotamus and Western chimpanzee which reacted with relatively high frequencies, representing 32.82%, 52.96% and 16.14% of the distance data, respectively. Not taking into account the species-specific responses to the CTs can lead to an artificial doubling or tripling of the populations’ sizes. All species reacted more to the CTs at close distances. Besides, the Jentink’s duiker and the pygmy hippopotamus reacted significantly more to the CTs at night than during the day. Finally, as for olfactory signals, the probability of reaction to the CTs during the first days after CTs installation was weak in Maxwell’s duiker, but concerned 18% of the video captures in Western chimpanzees which decreasing with time, but they remained high in pygmy hippopotamus and Jentink’s duiker (65% and 70% of the video captures respectively). Careful consideration should be given to animal’s response to CTs during the analysis and in the field, by reducing human’s impact around the CTs installation

    Detection of topological transitions by transport through molecules and nanodevices

    We analyze the phase transitions of an interacting electronic system weakly coupled to free-electron leads by considering its zero-bias conductance. This is expressed in terms of two effective impurity models for the cases with and without spin degeneracy. We demonstrate using the half-filled ionic Hubbard ring that the weight of the first conductance peak as a function of external flux or of the difference in gate voltages between even and odd sites allows one to identify the topological charge transition between a correlated insulator and a band insulator.Comment: 4 pages, 5 figures, to appear in Phys.
