Microwave assisted decomposition of protein-and fath rich samples under mild acidic conditions.
Chronic mild prenatal stress exacerbates the allergen-induced airway inflammation in rats.
The effects of chronic mild prenatal stress on leukocyte infiltration into the airways was investigated in rat offspring. The chronic prenatal stress consisted of transitory and variable changes in the rat's living conditions. Offspring at adult age were actively sensitized (day 0) and intratracheally challenged (day 14) with ovalbumin. Bronchoalveolar lavage was performed in the offspring at 48 h after intratracheal challenge with ovalbumin. A significant increase in total leukocyte infiltration was observed in the non-stressed offspring group and this was associated with a marked recruitment of eosinophils without a significant effect on the influx of neutrophils and mononuclear cells. In the prenatal stressed offspring, the counts of both total leukocyte and eosinophils, as well as mononuclear cells, was increased by 50% compared to the non-stressed offspring. We provide here the first experimental evidence that chronic mild unpredictable prenatal stress produces a marked increase in the allergen-induced airway inflammation in the rat offspring
Multimode Hong-Ou-Mandel Interferometry
We review some recent experiments based upon multimode two-photon
interference of photon pairs created by spontaneous parametric down-conversion.
The new element provided by these experiments is the inclusion of the
transverse spatial profiles of the pump, signal and idler fields. We discuss
multimode Hong-Ou-Mandel interference, and show that the transverse profile of
the pump beam can be manipulated in order to control two-photon interference.
We present the basic theory and experimental results as well as several
applications to the field of quantum information.Comment: 20 pages, 14 figures, Brief Review to be published in Modern Physics

Criticality in the 2+1-dimensional compact Higgs model and fractionalized insulators
We use a novel method of computing the third moment M_3 of the action of the
2+1-dimensional compact Higgs model in the adjoint representation with q=2 to
extract correlation length and specific heat exponents nu and alpha, without
invoking hyperscaling. Finite-size scaling analysis of M_3 yields the ratio
(1+alpha)/nu and 1/nu separately. We find that alpha and nu vary along the
critical line of the theory, which however exhibits a remarkable resilience of
Z_2 criticality. We propose this novel universality class to be that of the
quantum phase transition from a Mott-Hubbard insulator to a
charge-fractionalized insulator in two spatial dimensions.Comment: 4 pages, 3 figures, submitted to Phys. Rev. Let
The DEPURANAT project : sustainable management of wastewater in rural areas
The DEPURANATt project received co-financing from the European Union through its interregional
cooperation programme, Interreg IIIB Atlantic Arc Programme. This project, coordinated
by the Canary Islands Institute of Technology, allowed French, Portuguese and Spanish
institutions to work together on sustainable management of wastewater in rural and protected
areas.
Within the framework of this project, twelve natural wastewater treatment systems have been
built or adapted from pre-existing systems in Portugal, Andalusia and the Canary islands. In
these systems, a shared ambitious protocol of physical-chemical and microbiological analyses
was established, and several studies carried out with respect to the agronomical quality of the
effluents and the physiology of the plants. These analytical campaigns also attempted to
promote a positive image of these systems to, and in, the rural areas.
Moreover, it is important for the target publics to value correctly the possibilities created by
regenerated wastewater and vegetal biomass, and thus accept the same as integral methods
which contribute to sustainable local development. Several studies relating to social integration
were focused, to this end, on measuring people’s acceptance of these systems in their areas,
whereas the environmental impact of the systems was determined using an adapted life cycle
assessment methodology.
The economic analysis of the systems focused on analysing the financial indicators, empirical
cost functions, and the potential market for these technologies.
Furthermore, maps of potential areas where natural wastewater treatment systems may be
implemented have been created. Finally, a support tool for deciding upon the installation of
conventional or natural wastewater treatment systems has been designed with the aim of
informing at technicians about the most suitable technology to be applied in each situation

Nitrous oxide fluxes in an integrated crop-livestock-forest system in Sinop-MT.
The objective of this study was to evaluate the mitigation potential of crop-livestock-forest integration system (ICLF) or monoculture forest, farming and grazing, check the seasonal differences in emissions between them and the effect of management operations of cultures on N2O fluxes
