A Performance Comparison of TCP/IP and MPI on FDDI, Fast Ethernet, and Ethernet

    Get PDF
Communication is a very important factor affecting distributed applications. Getting a close handle on network performance (both bandwidth and latency) is thus crucial to understanding overall application performance. We benchmarked some of the metrics of network performance using two sets of experiments, namely roundtrip and datahose. The tests were designed to measure a combination of network latency, bandwidth, and contention. We repeated the tests for two protocols (TCP/IP and MPI) and three networks (100 Mbit FDDI (Fiber Distributed Data Interface), 100 Mbit Fast Ethernet, and 10 Mbit Ethernet). The performance results provided interesting insights into the behaviour of these networks under different load conditions and the software overheads associated with an MPI implementation (MPICH). This document presents details about the experiments, their results, and our analysis of the performance. Revised on 1/8/96 to emphasize our use of a particular MPI implementation, MPICH

Acute Myeloid Leukemia and Fatal Scedosporium prolificans Sepsis After Eculizumab Treatment for Paroxysmal Nocturnal Hemoglobinuria: a Case Report

Eculizumab has become the standard of care for patients with paroxysmal nocturnal hemoglobinuria (PNH). As more patients are treated, the long-term outcomes of these patients will become apparent. We recently treated a patient who developed PNH in the setting of aplastic anemia. The patient developed acute myeloid leukemia less than three years after initiating eculizumab. The patient also died suddenly from Scedosporium sepsis during induction therapy. This patient\u27s course seemed more aggressive than would be expected. The possible effect of complement blockade is discussed

d- and l-amino acids in Antarctic lakes: assessment of a very sensitive HPLC-MS method

Amino acids represent a fraction of organic matter in marine and freshwater ecosystems, and a source of carbon, nitrogen and energy. l-Amino acids are the most common enantiomers in nature because these chiral forms are used during the biosynthesis of proteins and peptide. To the contrary, the occurrence of d-amino acids is usually linked to the presence of bacteria. We investigated the distribution of l- and d-amino acids in the lacustrine environment of Terra Nova Bay, Antarctica, in order to define their natural composition in this area and to individuate a possible relationship with primary production. A simultaneous chromatographic separation of 40 l- and d-amino acids was performed using a chiral stationary phase based on teicoplainin aglycone (chirobiotic tag). The chromatographic separation was coupled to two different mass spectrometers-an LTQ-Orbitrap XL (Thermo Fisher Scientific) and an API 4000 (ABSciex)-in order to investigate their quantitative performance. High-performance liquid chromatography coupled with mass spectrometry methods were evaluated through the estimation of their linear ranges, repeatability, accuracy and detection and quantification limits. The high-resolution mass spectrometer LTQ-Orbitrap XL presented detection limits between 0.4 and 7 mu g l (-1), while the triple quadrupole mass spectrometer API 4000 achieved the best detection limits reported in the literature for the quantification of amino acids (between 4 and 200 ng l (-1)). The most sensitive method, HPLC-API 4000, was applied to lake water samples

A Queuing Analysis of Bandwidth Allocation Schemes for Compressed Video

    Get PDF
Video and audio compression techniques allow continuous media streams to be transmitted at bit rates that are a function of the delivered quality of service. Digital networks will be increasingly used for the transmission of such continuous media streams. This paper describes an admission control policy in which the quality of service is negotiated at stream initiation, and is a function of both the desired quality of service and the available bandwidth resources. The advantage of this approach is the ability to robustly service large numbers of users, while providing increased quality of service during low usage periods. Several simple algorithms for implementing this policy are described and evaluated using queuing model analysis applied to video-on-demand. The queuing model results are compared with simulation results to validate their accuracy.
