    Get PDF
The advancement of information and communication technology (ICT) over the last decades has brought significant economic and social improvements to both the society and countries. Not only does it revolutionize the global economic structure, ICT is fast becoming a key tool in driving economic growth by promoting productivity and competitiveness, stimulating international trade as well as paving the way for more and better jobs in the market. In the body of literature, there exists a general consensus among researchers that ICT has significant and positive relationship with economic growth. However, most of the evidences come from microeconomic studies, where the firm or countries are typically restricted to specific sectors or regions, or even grouped according to different levels of development. Evidence on impacts of ICT on economic growth across different regions on the other hand, is still scarce and requires further investigation. With the endogenous growth theory as a theoretical basis, this study therefore attempts to analyze further the impact of ICT on economic indicators for five different country groups, namely Africa, America, Arab, Asia and Europe, over a 9-year period of 2006 to 2014. In this study, ICT is defined according to two dimensions - ICT access and usage - where they are proxied by four different measures, namely fixed broadband subscriptions, fixed telephone subscriptions, mobile cellular subscriptions and Internet users

Starting from the analysis of the concept of inclusion of children with Down Syndrome in mainstream education in the first grade of basic education in the schools of the Autonomous Region of Madeira, after the intervention of the Early Intervention Team, referring to expectations of mothers, this study addresses the major factors that may influence this issue. It aims to analyze mothers’ expectations on the inclusive process of children with Down Syndrome in the transition from preschool to 1st cycle and understand the extent to which Early Intervention contributes to the existence of positive or negative expectations towards the inclusion of their children. At the same time it seeks to find out what the main concerns regarding the entrance of their children in the first cycle are. This work is based on a qualitative approach: data were gathered by conducting seven interviews with mothers of children with Down Syndrome. For the analysis of the information collected, it was used the content analysis technique in which categories were defined afterwards. It was concluded that mothers have positive expectations regarding the inclusion of their children, but nevertheless, they have negative expectations concerning the services provided by Early Intervention Teams in terms of adequacy of services, namely the amount of time dedicated to Speech Therapy that wasn’t considered enough by most mothers. Regarding the entrance into the first cycle, the main concerns are related to the oral communication that their child will establish with teachers and peers, with the eventual desensitization of teachers towards the problem of Down Syndrome and with regard to learning, the major concerns go for the ability to keep up with their peers’ pace of work and the ability, or not, to read and write

Demystifying the Issue of House Affordability in Malaysia: The Bi-Directional Relationship Between House Prices, Economic Growth, and Income Inequality

    Get PDF
To understand the issue of house affordability in Malaysia, this study investigated the relationship between house prices and economic growth based on the data from the year 2000 to 2020. By utilizing the Toda-Yamamoto Granger causality test, it is identified that the relationship between the variables is bidirectional where house price movement is explained by economic growth. It implies that economic development drives house prices upward in the country. Conversely, the level of economic growth is also determined by house prices, and this clarifies the significant role of the housing market in stimulating the economy. The analysis also indicates that there is a mutual interaction between house prices and income inequality. Although the increase in house prices leads to higher economic growth, the rise in aggregate income that comes with it is enjoyed mainly by the top income earners of society. These findings are important for policymakers in addressing the issue of house affordability since it suggests that the issue of house affordability is partly contributed by income disparity. Since house price moves together with economic development, houses in Malaysia should remain affordable as long as income disparity is lessened if not diminished by ensuring that the economic prosperity is equally distributed among the society

Challenges and rewards are integral to the logic of digital games, and through them, users can learn and develop various skills. When games are employed in educational contexts, they can enhance creativity and contribute to students' development. The Game-Based Learning (GBL) methodology is grounded in the use of games in the educational context, whether they are meant for educational or entertainment purposes. This article aims to investigate whether the digital puzzle game called FEZ - which takes place in a three-dimensional scenario where the player interacts through two-dimensional views - can be used for teaching geometry, specifically from the perspective of Descriptive Geometry for learning concepts about the System of Views. To achieve this goal, we analyzed FEZ from the perspective of the Instrumental Approach as an educational resource for teaching concepts of the Orthographic Drawings System. As a result, we identify similar characteristics between the Orthographic Drawings System and the design aspects of the FEZ game that suggest the possibility of using this game as a didactic resource
