INVESTIGATION ON HYDROLOGIC PERFORMANCE OF PERVIOUS CONCRETE PAVEMENT BY FINITE ELEMENT ANALYSIS

    Get PDF
Pervious concrete pavement has been used widely as an effective practice for water management in low-impact development techniques. The hydrologic performance of pervious concrete pavement depends significantly on the rainfall intensity and the designed slope. This study assessed the hydrologic performance of pervious concrete pavement by evaluating the time for surface ponding via finite element analysis. A series of simulations were carried out to explore the relationship between hydrologic performance and pervious concrete pavement by the Hydrus 2D program. The research’s results showed that as the slope increased, the time of surface ponding also increased. The data indicated that the slope variable had a low impact on the water level in pervious concrete pavement under a constant rainfall intensity. Observation of the effect of rainfall intensity showed that when the rainfall intensity increased twofold, the time for surface ponding dropped about two times. Furthermore, when surface ponding appeared, pervious concrete pavement at higher rainfall intensity had lower water content. The rainfall intensity also significantly affects the hydrologic performance of the pervious concrete pavement. This study only assessed the hydrologic performance by using the time for surface ponding via finite element analysis. Further experimental studies should be conducted to examine the relationship of other factors to the hydrologic performance of pervious concrete pavement

Examination of influential factors on shear strength of externally bonded FRP reinforcement in RC beams

The fiber-reinforced polymer (FRP) retrofitting technique has been increasingly created to enhance the capacity of the existing concrete members. In this study, the shear contribution of the external FRP strengthening system in the reinforced concrete (RC) beams is estimated by the semi-empirical models available in the open literatures and guidelines. Number of beams monitored in the previous studies are first considered to assess the reliability of the models. Afterwards, the investigation of influential factors such as the beam configurations, the strengthening characteristics and the material properties are implemented. With high accuracy and low coefficient of variation, the model proposed in a previous study of the authors gains the mostly considerable estimation for the shear resisting strength of FRP strengthening system compared to the accessible data base from the experiments. In addition, the critical properties of the materials associating with the retrofitting systems for the strengthened beams are investigated to obtain the acquired shear performance

Risk management is one of the critical factors contributing to infrastructure project success. Risk assessment enables both practitioners and decision-makers to identify and analyze potential risks and quantify risk impacts on project performance in terms of time, cost, and quality. Even though many studies attempt to investigate the risk of construction projects with the consideration of technical, organizational, and legal aspects, only a few studies deeply focus on identifying the critical risks of bridge projects with the examination of climate change impact. The current study concentrates on analyzing risks in bridge construction projects in the Mekong Delta region which has been significantly affected by climate change. An intensive review of previous publications and technical project reports from 2010 to 2021 was conducted to identify the list of potential risks and interviews and discussions with engineers and managers involved in bridge projects were carried out to identify critical risks of bridge projects. Analytic Network Process (ANP) method was introduced to evaluate the impact of such risks on the performance of bridge project implementation. The initial results of this study provide a holistic picture of risk management for bridge projects with the consideration of climate change impact. The findings can help the involved parties including owners, contractors, and project managers to assess particular risks and scheme backup plans to mitigate project delays and cost overruns

    Get PDF
Vocabulary learning is extremely important when learning a foreign language. Fluency in a language depends on vocabulary and its use in specific situations. Speaking well is using vocabulary flexibly and speaking fluently. Researching the popularity of vocabulary is analyzing the prevalence of vocabulary used by linguistics students in communication from discourse analysis. This is a topic the research team is working on. This project will help the researchers learn about common vocabulary that students often use to communicate outside or in the classroom. Thereby understanding whether the vocabulary that students use is diverse, rich, and for the right purpose or not. This study will help students have a more comprehensive view of the ways to use words in communication. In addition, it also helps students improve their communication vocabulary, helps in exams and can be useful for later work. In this study, the research team will investigate the students' ability to use spoken vocabulary, i.e., frequency and extent of vocabulary usage.  Article visualizations

A Retrospective Analysis of the Haemodynamic and Metabolic Effects of Fluid Resuscitation in Vietnamese Adults with Severe Falciparum Malaria

BACKGROUND: Optimising the fluid resuscitation of patients with severe malaria is a simple and potentially cost-effective intervention. Current WHO guidelines recommend central venous pressure (CVP) guided, crystalloid based, resuscitation in adults. METHODS: Prospectively collected haemodynamic data from intervention trials in Vietnamese adults with severe malaria were analysed retrospectively to assess the responses to fluid resuscitation. RESULTS: 43 patients were studied of whom 24 received a fluid load. The fluid load resulted in an increase in cardiac index (mean increase: 0.75 L/min/m(2) (95% Confidence interval (CI): 0.41 to 1.1)), but no significant change in acid-base status post resuscitation (mean increase base deficit 0.6 mmol/L (95% CI: -0.1 to 1.3). The CVP and PAoP (pulmonary artery occlusion pressure) were highly inter-correlated (r(s) = 0.7, p<0.0001), but neither were correlated with acid-base status (arterial pH, serum bicarbonate, base deficit) or respiratory status (PaO(2)/FiO(2) ratio). There was no correlation between the oxygen delivery (DO(2)) and base deficit at the 63 time-points where they were assessed simultaneously (r(s) = -0.09, p = 0.46). CONCLUSIONS: In adults with severe falciparum malaria there was no observed improvement in patient outcomes or acid-base status with fluid loading. Neither CVP nor PAoP correlated with markers of end-organ perfusion or respiratory status, suggesting these measures are poor predictors of their fluid resuscitation needs

Severe Pandemic H1N1 2009 Infection Is Associated with Transient NK and T Deficiency and Aberrant CD8 Responses

BACKGROUND: It is unclear why the severity of influenza varies in healthy adults or why the burden of severe influenza shifts to young adults when pandemic strains emerge. One possibility is that cross-protective T cell responses wane in this age group in the absence of recent infection. We therefore compared the acute cellular immune response in previously healthy adults with severe versus mild pandemic H1N1 infection. METHODS AND PRINCIPAL FINDINGS: 49 previously healthy adults admitted to the National Hospital of Tropical Diseases, Viet Nam with RT-PCR-confirmed 2009 H1N1 infection were prospectively enrolled. 39 recovered quickly whereas 10 developed severe symptoms requiring supplemental oxygen and prolonged hospitalization. Peripheral blood lymphocyte subset counts and activation (HLADR, CD38) and differentiation (CD27, CD28) marker expression were determined on days 0, 2, 5, 10, 14 and 28 by flow cytometry. NK, CD4 and CD8 lymphopenia developed in 100%, 90% and 60% of severe cases versus 13% (p<0.001), 28%, (p = 0.001) and 18% (p = 0.014) of mild cases. CD4 and NK counts normalized following recovery. B cell counts were not significantly associated with severity. CD8 activation peaked 6-8 days after mild influenza onset, when 13% (6-22%) were HLADR+CD38+, and was accompanied by a significant loss of resting/CD27+CD28+ cells without accumulation of CD27+CD28- or CD27-CD28- cells. In severe influenza CD8 activation peaked more than 9 days post-onset, and/or was excessive (30-90% HLADR+CD38+) in association with accumulation of CD27+CD28- cells and maintenance of CD8 counts. CONCLUSION: Severe influenza is associated with transient T and NK cell deficiency. CD8 phenotype changes during mild influenza are consistent with a rapidly resolving memory response whereas in severe influenza activation is either delayed or excessive, and partially differentiated cells accumulate within blood indicating that recruitment of effector cells to the lung could be impaired

Dialysis and pediatric acute kidney injury: choice of renal support modality

    Get PDF
Dialytic intervention for infants and children with acute kidney injury (AKI) can take many forms. Whether patients are treated by intermittent hemodialysis, peritoneal dialysis or continuous renal replacement therapy depends on specific patient characteristics. Modality choice is also determined by a variety of factors, including provider preference, available institutional resources, dialytic goals and the specific advantages or disadvantages of each modality. Our approach to AKI has benefited from the derivation and generally accepted defining criteria put forth by the Acute Dialysis Quality Initiative (ADQI) group. These are known as the risk, injury, failure, loss, and end-stage renal disease (RIFLE) criteria. A modified pediatrics RIFLE (pRIFLE) criteria has recently been validated. Common defining criteria will allow comparative investigation into therapeutic benefits of different dialytic interventions. While this is an extremely important development in our approach to AKI, several fundamental questions remain. Of these, arguably, the most important are “When and what type of dialytic modality should be used in the treatment of pediatric AKI?” This review will provide an overview of the limited data with the aim of providing objective guidelines regarding modality choice for pediatric AKI. Comparisons in terms of cost, availability, safety and target group will be reviewed

In this paper, a solar air collector duct equipped with baffles on a back plate was numerically investigated. The Reynolds number (Re) was varied from 5000 to 20,000, the angle baffle (a) from 30° to 120°, the baffle spacing ratio (Pr) from 2 to 8, and the baffle blockage ratio (Br) from 0.375 to 0.75 to examine their effects on the Nusselt number (Nu), the friction factor (f), and the thermohydraulic performance parameter (η). The 2D numerical simulation used the standard k-ε turbulence model with enhanced wall treatment. The Taguchi method was used to design the experiment, generating an orthogonal array consisting of four factors each at four levels. The optimization results from the Taguchi method and CFD analysis showed that the optimal geometry of a = 90°, Pr = 6, and Br = 0.375 achieved the maximum η. The influence of Br on all investigated parameters was considerable because as Br increased, a larger primary vortex region was formed downstream of the baffle. At Re = 5000 and the optimal geometry parameters, a maximum η of 1.01 was reached. A baffle angle between 60° and 90° achieved a high Nusselt number due to the impingement heat transfer
