    Structure and photoactivity for hydrogen production of CdS nanorods modified with In, Ga, Ag-In and Ag-Ga and prepared by solvothermal method

    This work studies the variation in the photocatalytic properties of CdS derived from the insertion of In, Ga, Ag-In and Ag-Ga in the CdS lattice through solvothermal methodology. Solvothermal synthesis of CdS-M photocatalysts has been succesful for the insertion of Ga3þ, In3þ, Ga3þ/Agþ and In3þ/Agþ into the hexagonal crystal lattice of one-dimensional CdS. The insertion of In, Ga, Ag-In and Ag-Ga modifies the band gap and the relative position of EVB. CdS modified with In3þ or Ga3þ shows an increase in the band gap and upshift in the relative position of the valence band energy which leads to a low efficiency hydrogen production. The co-addition of Agþ-In3þ or Agþ-Ga3þ favours the insertion of Agþ ions into the CdS lattice with narrower band gap. Of all the co-substituted photocatalysts, the CdS-AgGa was the only one that showed a higher photoactivity with respect to the CdS. The increase in the photoactivity of the CdS-AgGa photocatalyst is related to the band gap narrowing and downshift in the relative position of the valence band energy which enhance their visible light absorption and potential for oxidation. The CdS-AgGa photocatalyst shows small segregation of metallic Ag nanoparticles at the surface which also assist in the photoactivity of the sample.publishe

    Novel role of cPLA2α in membrane and actin dynamics

    Actin-directed processes such as membrane ruffling and cell migration are regulated by specific signal transduction pathways that become activated by growth factor receptors. The same signaling pathways that lead to modifications in actin dynamics also activate cPLA2α. Moreover, arachidonic acid, the product of cPLA2α activity, is involved in regulation of actin dynamics. Therefore, it was investigated whether cPLA2α plays a role in actin dynamics, more specifically during growth factor-induced membrane ruffling and cell migration. Upon stimulation of ruffling and cell migration by growth factors, endogenous cPLA2α and its active phosphorylated form were shown to relocate at protrusions of the cell membrane involved in actin and membrane dynamics. Inhibition of cPLA2α activity with specific inhibitors blocked growth factor-induced membrane and actin dynamics, suggesting an important role for cPLA2α in these processes

    A Relationship between Carotenoid Accumulation and the Distribution of Species of the Fungus Neurospora in Spain

    The ascomycete fungus Neurospora is present in many parts of the world, in particular in tropical and subtropical areas, where it is found growing on recently burned vegetation. We have sampled the Neurospora population across Spain. The sampling sites were located in the region of Galicia (northwestern corner of the Iberian peninsula), the province of Cáceres, the city of Seville, and the two major islands of the Canary Islands archipelago (Tenerife and Gran Canaria, west coast of Africa). The sites covered a latitude interval between 27.88° and 42.74°. We have identified wild-type strains of N. discreta, N. tetrasperma, N. crassa, and N. sitophila and the frequency of each species varied from site to site. It has been shown that after exposure to light Neurospora accumulates the orange carotenoid neurosporaxanthin, presumably for protection from UV radiation. We have found that each Neurospora species accumulates a different amount of carotenoids after exposure to light, but these differences did not correlate with the expression of the carotenogenic genes al-1 or al-2. The accumulation of carotenoids in Neurospora shows a correlation with latitude, as Neurospora strains isolated from lower latitudes accumulate more carotenoids than strains isolated from higher latitudes. Since regions of low latitude receive high UV irradiation we propose that the increased carotenoid accumulation may protect Neurospora from high UV exposure. In support of this hypothesis, we have found that N. crassa, the species that accumulates more carotenoids, is more resistant to UV radiation than N. discreta or N. tetrasperma. The photoprotection provided by carotenoids and the capability to accumulate different amounts of carotenoids may be responsible, at least in part, for the distribution of Neurospora species that we have observed across a range of latitudes

    Cervical cancer (CC) is the most common cancer in women in the lower genital tract. The main risk factor for developing CC is persistent infection with HPV 16. The E6 and E7 oncoproteins of HPV 16 have been related to metabolic reprogramming in cancer through the regulation of the expression and stability of HIF-1α and consequently of the expression of its target genes, such as HIF1A (HIF-1α), SLC2A1 (GLUT1), LDHA, CA9 (CAIX), SLC16A3 (MCT4), and BSG (Basigin or CD147), which are involved in glucose metabolism. This work aimed to evaluate the expression of HIF-1α, GLUT1, LDHA, CAIX, MCT4, and Basigin in patient samples and CC cell lines. To evaluate the expression level of HIF1A, SLC2A1, LDHA, CA9, SLC16A3, and BSG genes in tissue from patients with CC and normal tissue, the TCGA dataset was used. To evaluate the expression level of these genes by RT-qPCR in CC cell lines, HPV-negative (C-33A) and HPV-16-positive (SiHa and Ca Ski) cell lines were used. Increased expression of HIF1A, SLC2A1, LDHA, SLC16A3, and BSG was found in Ca Ski and CA9 in SiHa compared to C-33A. Similar results were observed in CC tissues compared to normal tissue obtained by bioinformatics analysis. In conclusion, the expression of HIF-1α, GLUT1, LDHA, CAIX, MCT4, and BSG genes is increased in CC and HPV-16-positive cell lines
