Emphasizing class-based policies can help civil society to mobilize women, the elderly, and ethnic and minority groups in the US election
The 2016 election cycle has been marked by a populist rebellion against Washington by the supporters of Donald Trump, and the billionaire class by those who follow Senator Bernie Sanders. Vicente Navarro writes on the election with a European view, and investigates why women’s and African American organizations are supporting Hillary Clinton rather than Sanders, given that they would benefit more from Sanders’ policy program. He explains that such organizations tend to focus on race, gender, or age, rather than class. He argues that politicians on the left and social movements need to learn from Europe and begin to emphasize class-based policies
After Syriza’s victory, Podemos now poses a major threat to the Spanish political establishment
Following Syriza’s victory in the Greek elections on 25 January, a number of commentators have turned their attention toward Spain, where the left-wing Podemos, which originally emerged from the Indignados protest movement, has been receiving strong polling numbers since the end of 2014. Vicente Navarro writes on the growth of Podemos and his role in shaping the party’s economic programme. He argues that the anti-austerity and pro-democracy narrative put forward by Podemos has deeply resonated with the Spanish electorate, and that the party now poses a major threat to the Spanish political establishment
Stratifications parfaites et théorie des poids
In this paper, we emphasize Deligne's theory of weights, in order to prove that some stratifications of algebraic varieties are perfect. In particular, we study in some detail the Bialynicki-Birula's stratifications and the stratifications considered by F. Kirwan to compute the cohomology of symplectic or geometric quotients. Finally we also appoint the motivic formulation of this approach, which contains the Hodge theoretic forrnulation
Germany must share some of the blame for the persistence of the economic crisis in Spain.
Spain has been hit hard by the Eurozone crisis, with unemployment levels pushing towards 27 per cent. Vicente Navarro writes on the role that Germany, the most powerful EU state, has played in the Spanish crisis. He argues that German banks must also share some of the responsibility for perpetuating Spain’s housing bubble, and that it is misleading to simply blame Spanish authorities for spending more than they could afford

How neoliberal dogma has prolonged the Covid-19 pandemic
After a year of coping with the COVID-19 pandemic, widespread vaccination programs may signal that its end is in sight for many countries. But, writes Vicente Navarro, the pandemic could have been resolved much more quickly, vaccine shortages avoided, and fewer lives lost to COVID-19, had national governments not only financed vaccine development, but taken on its production as well. By guaranteeing pharmaceutical companies the intellectual property rights to vaccines, he argues, governments have prolonged the pandemic
