Limnotrachelobdella okae (Hirudinida, Piscicolidae) from Cherry Salmon Oncorhynchus masou masou in Neritic Deep Waters of the Western North Pacific Ocean

    Get PDF
The piscicolid leech Limnotrachelobdella okae (Moore, 1924) was found attached to the skin near the pectoral fin of a cherry salmon Oncorhynchus masou masou caught at a depth of 180-200 m in the western North Pacific Ocean off the east coast of northern Honshu, Japan. This is the first record of L. okae from the ocean-swimming salmonid in neritic deep waters although it is not known where the fish was infected. L. okae has been generally believed to be a parasite of both marine and freshwater fishes, but it is concluded, based on the present results and the literature review on the host and distributional records, that the leech is a coastal marine or brackish-water species: the infection occurs only in salt waters, and anadromous fishes, such as salmonids, carry the leech to fresh waters, where it can survive for a certain period

The relationship between auditory ERP and neuropsychological assessments in schizophrenia

金沢大学附属病院To clarify the cognitive significance of event-related potential (ERP) abnormalities in schizophrenia, we examined the relationships of amplitudes and latencies of ERP components with performance on neuropsychological tests in schizophrenic patients. Twenty patients underwent the Trail Making B Test (TM-B), which is sensitive to frontal lobe dysfunction, and the logical memory, verbal paired-association, and visual reproduction subtests of the Wechsler Memory Scale (WMS), which are sensitive to temporal lobe dysfunctions, and ERP recordings during performance of an oddball auditory discrimination task. Pearson product–moment correlations indicated that an increased P200 amplitude was correlated with poor performance on the TM-B, whereas a decreased P300 amplitude was correlated with poor performance on the verbal paired-association subtest of the WMS. These findings suggest that a P200 abnormality represents the frontal lobe dysfunction, and a P300 abnormality represents the left temporal lobe dysfunction in schizophrenia

    Lymph Node Stromal Cell Subsets

The spatiotemporal regulation of immune responses in the lymph node (LN) depends on its sophisticated tissue architecture, consisting of several subcompartments supported by distinct fibroblastic stromal cells (FSCs). However, the intricate details of stromal structures and associated FSC subsets are not fully understood. Using several gene reporter mice, we sought to discover unrecognized stromal structures and FSCs in the LN. The four previously identified FSC subsets in the cortex are clearly distinguished by the expression pattern of reporters including PDGFRb, CCL21-ser, and CXCL12. Herein, we identified a unique FSC subset expressing both CCL21-ser and CXCL12 in the deep cortex periphery (DCP) that is characterized by preferential B cell localization. This subset was clearly different fromCXCL12highLepRhigh FSCs in themedullary cord, which harbors plasma cells. B cell localization in the DCP was controlled chiefly by CCL21-ser and, to a lesser extent, CXCL12. Moreover, the optimal development of the DCP as well as medulla requires B cells. Together, our findings suggest the presence of a unique microenvironment in the cortex-medulla boundary and offer an advanced view of the multi-layered stromal framework constructed by distinct FSC subsets in the LN

Search for Outer Massive Bodies around Transiting Planetary Systems: Candidates of Faint Stellar Companions around HAT-P-7

We present results of direct imaging observations for HAT-P-7 taken with the Subaru HiCIAO and the Calar Alto AstraLux. Since the close-in transiting planet HAT-P-7b was reported to have a highly tilted orbit, massive bodies such as giant planets, brown dwarfs, or a binary star are expected to exist in the outer region of this system. We show that there are indeed two candidates for distant faint stellar companions around HAT-P-7. We discuss possible roles played by such companions on the orbital evolution of HAT-P-7b. We conclude that as there is a third body in the system as reported by Winn et al. (2009, ApJL, 763, L99), the Kozai migration is less likely while planet-planet scattering is possible.Comment: 8 pages, 3 figures, 2 tables, PASJ in pres

Identification of cell cycle–arrested quiescent osteoclast precursors in vivo

Osteoclasts are multinucleated cells that resorb bone. Although osteoclasts originate from the monocyte/macrophage lineage, osteoclast precursors are not well characterized in vivo. The relationship between proliferation and differentiation of osteoclast precursors is examined in this study using murine macrophage cultures treated with macrophage colony-stimulating factor (M-CSF) and receptor activator of NF-κB (RANK) ligand (RANKL). Cell cycle–arrested quiescent osteoclast precursors (QuOPs) were identified as the committed osteoclast precursors in vitro. In vivo experiments show that QuOPs survive for several weeks and differentiate into osteoclasts in response to M-CSF and RANKL. Administration of 5-fluorouracil to mice induces myelosuppression, but QuOPs survive and differentiate into osteoclasts in response to an active vitamin D3 analogue given to those mice. Mononuclear cells expressing c-Fms and RANK but not Ki67 are detected along bone surfaces in the vicinity of osteoblasts in RANKL-deficient mice. These results suggest that QuOPs preexist at the site of osteoclastogenesis and that osteoblasts are important for maintenance of QuOPs
