Research Note An Urgent Need for Ethics Education for Accountants

    Get PDF
Social, political and technological changes have challenged traditional idea of professionalpractice by accountants. Accounting is both an essential practice and a vital profession in theeconomically developed world of today (Ronald F.Duska and Brenda Shay Duska,2003). Today, professional accountants cannot exist by technical knowledge alone; they have to possesand apply that within a framework of professional values, ethics and attitudes.(Peter Williams,2007). Ethics, values and principles serve as benchmarks of the accounting profession. Theydetermine what is right and wrong, appropriate and inappropriate, on a universal basis everytime. (Joe Lienandt, 2003). Enron’s bankruptcy case, in which their auditors and consultantsfrom the accounting firm Arthur Anderson, came under criticism for not apparently carryingout their responsibilities as accountants. The Enron/Arthur Anderson’s case has raised the ethicalquestion, ‘what is the appropriate behaviour for accountants?’ and ‘what are the accountantssupposed to do?’ This paper attempts to address the following issues: How to teach ethics tothose entering the profession; How to ensure that the ethical standards and behaviour of experiencedaccountants are as fresh and relevant as technical knowledge. Copyright © www.iiste.or

    Get PDF
In this study, the dielectric behaviour of smart material, lead zirconate tiatanate (PZT), whichis important for wide industrial applications, has been explored. Two samples of nanostructuredPb(Zr0.52Ti0.48)O3 ceramic powders were prepared by hydroxide co-precipitation and aqueoussolution method (water bath technique). The XRD pattern of the  powder exhibited the presenceof major tetragonal and minor rhombohedral crystalline phases indicating the mixed-phasecomposition, which is close to the morphotropic phase boundary (MPB). SEM analysis revealedgood homogeneity of the materials. The plot of real part versus imaginary part of the compleximpedance was observed nearly a semicircle, indicating that the samples are good dielectricmaterials, whose resistance decreases considerably with the increase of temperature. Similar tothe normal ferroelectric materials, the dielectric constant () of PZT has been found to be increasinggradually with temperature and attains a maxima (max). The detailed analysis for the shift in peaktemperature and dielectric constant were carried out

    Get PDF
This review paper is focused on phytochemical and pharmacological overview of Acerola cherry. It is native to tropical and subtropical America. It is a small cherry like fruit and is often referred to as the Barbados, the West Indian, or the Puerto Rican cherry. This review has been conducted to update the information that is available in different scientific literatures. It is observed that the fruits of Acerola cherry are the rich source of Vitamin C and also contains phytochemicals such as anthocyanidin, carotenoids and polyphenols. These components exhibit various pharmacological activities like Free radical scavenging activities and inhibitory effects on both alpha-glucosidase and advanced glycation end products (AGEs) production. It is used as an antioxidant, antimicrobial agent and antihyperglycaemic agent. The Present review article can act as database for the phytochemical and pharmacological activities for future prospect and research

    Get PDF
We report the first published case of etravirine induced hypersensitivity reaction leading to fulminant hepatic failure in a 49-year-old female patient with Human Immunodefi ciency Virus. She presented with a life threatening rash and end stage organ damage requiring intensive care unit supportive care. Liver biopsy supported the diagnosis of drug-induced hypersensitivity. The patient recovered after withdrawal of etravirine and the use of systemic corticosteroids. The authors describe etravirine drug hypersensitivity as a clinically important reaction and that early recognition can improve survival

Dosimetric comparison of radiotherapy treatment plans done by IMRT and VMAT technique in head and neck cancer patients

    Get PDF
Background: The increasing patient load in radiotherapy centres demands selection of the technique that provides plans with optimal dosimetry in terms of target volume coverage, organs at risk (OAR) sparing and a lesser treatment time. This study was designed to compare the two widely practised conformal techniques, IMRT and VMAT in head and neck cancer patients in terms of planning target volume (PTV) coverage, OAR sparing and treatment delivery parameters. Materials and methods: For ten postoperative head and neck cancer patients who had been treated by IMRT technique virtual VMAT plans were generated for study purposes. The dose prescribed to PTV was 60 Gy in 30 fractions. The dose-volume parameters of PTV and OARs and the treatment delivery parameters were compared amongst both the techniques. Statistical significance was calculated using paired ‘t’ test. Results: Both the plans were comparable in terms of dosimetry. The only significant difference being better conformity in the IMRT plans. The dose to OARs was also comparable in both the techniques except for a significant reduction in the point dose to brainstem with the IMRT technique. Given the treatment delivery parameters, there was a significant reduction in the treatment delivery time and monitor units with the VMAT technique compared to the IMRT technique. Conclusion: VMAT technique gave comparable plans to that of the IMRT technique in terms of dosimetry but reduced the treatment time. It seems feasible in radiotherapy centres with increased patient load

    Get PDF
Respiratory mask contains a number of components made of materials like rubber, plastics, and metals. Out of all the components, face piece is the main component exposed to the external environment. This study aims to evaluate degradation of bromo-butyl rubber. The experiments were carried out for thermal exposure, swelling study, saline exposure, etc. It is observed that the elongation at break was increased by 10 per cent when these were exposed to 100 oC. However, the tensile strength has been observed to decrease by 50 per cent when exposed to 55 oC. It is decreased to around 63 per cent when exposed to 80 oC and 100 oC. The morphological appearance of unaged sample was intact. Only samples at 120 oC aged for 48 h appeared to have developed minor cracks of <0.01 µm. There were no significant changes observed when the samples were exposed to saline (3 % NaCl) and artificial sweat solution.Defence Science Journal, 2009, 59(5), pp.505-511, DOI:http://dx.doi.org/10.14429/dsj.59.155
