    Effect of local injection of Corynebacterium parvum on the growth of a murine fibrosarcoma.

    Local injection (i.e. injection at the site of tumour inoculation) of strains of C. Parvum which have a significant anti-tumour effect when given systemically (i.e. intravenously or, in the case of subcutaneous tumour transplant, intraperitoneally) strongly inhibits the growth of isogeneic transplants of a fibrosarcoma in intact CBA mice but has little or no effect on subcutaneous transplants of the same tumour in T-cell deprived mice. The anti-tumour effect of local injection of C. parvum, unlike that of systemic injection in this particular tumour system, thus appears to be T-cell dependent

    Spin resonance in the superconducting state of Li1−x_{1-x}Fex_{x}ODFe1−y_{1-y}Se observed by neutron spectroscopy

    We have performed inelastic neutron scattering measurements on a powder sample of the superconductor lithium iron selenide hydroxide Li1−x_{1-x}Fex_{x}ODFe1−y_{1-y}Se (x≃0.16,y≃0.02x \simeq 0.16, y \simeq 0.02, Tc=41T_{\rm c} = 41\,K). The spectrum shows an enhanced intensity below TcT_{\rm c} over an energy range 0.64×2Δ<E<2Δ0.64\times2\Delta < E < 2\Delta, where Δ\Delta is the superconducting gap, with maxima at the wave vectors Q1≃1.46Q_1 \simeq 1.46\,\AA−1^{-1} and Q2≃1.97Q_2 \simeq 1.97\,\AA−1^{-1}. The behavior of this feature is consistent with the spin resonance mode found in other unconventional superconductors, and strongly resembles the spin resonance observed in the spectrum of the molecular-intercalated iron selenide, Li0.6_{0.6}(ND2_{2})0.2_{0.2}(ND3_{3})0.8_{0.8}Fe2_{2}Se2_{2}. The signal can be described with a characteristic two-dimensional wave vector (π,0.67π)(\pi, 0.67\pi) in the Brillouin zone of the iron square lattice, consistent with the nesting vector between electron Fermi sheets

    Phonon sidebands of localized excitons in molecular crystals with methyl torsions: Hexamethylbenzene

    Fluorescence and phosphorescence phonon sidebands of isotopic mixed hexamethylbenzene crystals at 2°K are presented. The external phonons can be observed separately from the semi‐internal (methyl torsion) ones. The nature of the electronic or vibronic state has observable but not drastic effects on the exciton‐phonon coupling function. Likewise, the exciton delocalization is of minor importance to the exciton‐phonon function in hexamethylbenzene. The coupling between external and internal vibrations is also weak in this system. The exciton‐phonon coupling appears comparable for the optical and acoustic phonons in hexamethylbenzene.     Lack of an Interchromosomal Effect Associated with Spontaneous Recombination in Males of Drosophila Melanogaster

Second-chromosome male recombination in these lines was not affected by heterozygosity for the multiple third-chromosome inversions In(3LR)TM3 or In(3LR)Ubxm, which do affect recombination in females. It seems, therefore, that a large fraction of spontaneous recombination in males of D. melanogaster occurs by some mechanism other than that in females. We discuss the possibility that the mechanism is chromosome breakage and reunion, and that these breakage events may be caused by a microorganism

    On Streaming and Communication Complexity of the Set Cover Problem

    We develop the first streaming algorithm and the first two-party communication protocol that uses a constant number of passes/rounds and sublinear space/communication for logarithmic approximation to the classic Set Cover problem. Specifically, for n elements and m sets, our algorithm/protocol achieves a space bound of O(m ·n [superscript δ] log[superscript 2] n logm) using O(4[superscript 1/δ]) passes/rounds while achieving an approximation factor of O(4[superscript 1/δ]logn) in polynomial time (for δ = Ω(1/logn)). If we allow the algorithm/protocol to spend exponential time per pass/round, we achieve an approximation factor of O(4[superscript 1/δ]). Our approach uses randomization, which we show is necessary: no deterministic constant approximation is possible (even given exponential time) using o(m n) space. These results are some of the first on streaming algorithms and efficient two-party communication protocols for approximation algorithms.     Anti-Tumour Effect In Vitro of Lymphocytes and Macrophages from Mice Treated with Corynebacterium Parvum

    Cells from the spleen, lymph node, peripheral blood and peritoneal exudate of mice treated with C. parvum were tested for their ability to inhibit tumour growth in vitro. The peritoneal exudate cells from C. parvum treated mice were extremely effective in inhibiting tumour growth whereas the spleen and peripheral blood cells were only moderately so. In contrast, the lymph node cells caused only a modest inhibition of tumour growth at a very high effector to target cell ratio. Spleen cells from normal mice also exerted a moderate anti-tumour effect

    Incorporation of feedback during beat synchronization is an index of neural maturation and reading skills

    Speech communication involves integration and coordination of sensory perception and motor production, requiring precise temporal coupling. Beat synchronization, the coordination of movement with a pacing sound, can be used as an index of this sensorimotor timing. We assessed adolescents’ synchronization and capacity to correct asynchronies when given online visual feedback. Variability of synchronization while receiving feedback predicted phonological memory and reading sub-skills, as well as maturation of cortical auditory processing; less variable synchronization during the presence of feedback tracked with maturation of cortical processing of sound onsets and resting gamma activity. We suggest the ability to incorporate feedback during synchronization is an index of intentional, multimodal timing-based integration in the maturing adolescent brain. Precision of temporal coding across modalities is important for speech processing and literacy skills that rely on dynamic interactions with sound. Synchronization employing feedback may prove useful as a remedial strategy for individuals who struggle with timing-based language learning impairments
