Escaping stars from young low-N clusters
With the use of N-body calculations the amount and properties of escaping
stars from low-N (N = 100 and 1000) young embedded star clusters prior to gas
expulsion are studied over the first 5 Myr of their existence. Besides the
number of stars also different initial radii and binary populations are
examined as well as virialised and collapsing clusters. It is found that these
clusters can loose substantial amounts (up to 20%) of stars within 5 Myr with
considerable velocities up to more than 100 km/s. Even with their mean
velocities between 2 and 8 km/s these stars will still be travelling between 2
and 30 pc during the 5 Myr. Therefore can large amounts of distributed stars in
star-forming regions not necessarily be counted as evidence for the isolated
formation of stars.Comment: 10 pages, 10 figures, accepted for publication by MNRA
Mass accretion rates from multi-band photometry in the Carina Nebula: the case of Trumpler 14
We present a study of the mass accretion rates of pre-Main Sequence (PMS)
stars in the cluster Trumpler 14 (Tr14) in the Carina Nebula. Using optical
multi-band photometry we were able to identify 356 PMS stars showing H-alpha
excess emission with equivalent width EW(H-alpha)>20\AA. We interpret this
observational feature as indication that these objects are still actively
accreting gas from their circumstellar medium. From a comparison of the HR
diagram with PMS evolutionary models we derive ages and masses of the PMS
stars. We find that most of the PMS objects are younger than 10 Myr with a
median age of ~3 Myr. Surprisingly, we also find that ~20% of the mass
accreting objects are older than 10 Myr. For each PMS star in Trumpler 14 we
determine the mass accretion rate () and discuss its dependence
on mass and age. We finally combine the optical photometry with near-IR
observations to build the spectral energy distribution (SED) for each PMS star
in Tr14. The analysis of the SEDs suggests the presence of transitional discs
in which a large amount of gas is still present and sustains accretion onto the
PMS object at ages older than 10 Myr. Our results, discussed in light of recent
recent discoveries with Herschel of transitional discs containing a massive gas
component around the relatively old PSM stars TW Hydrae, 49 Ceti, and HD 95086,
support a new scenario in which old and evolved debris discs still host a
significant amount of gas.Comment: 12 pages, 13 figures, accepted for publication on A&
Star Formation in a Cosmological Simulation of Reionization
We study the luminosity functions of high-redshift galaxies in detailed
hydrodynamic simulations of cosmic reionization, which are designed to
reproduce the evolution of the Lyman-alpha forest between z=5 and z=6. We find
that the luminosity functions and total stellar mass densities are in agreement
with observations when plausible assumptions about reddenning at z=6 are made.
Our simulations support the conclusion that stars alone reionized the universe.Comment: Accepted for publication in Ap

Analysis of Scramjet Flight Trajectories with Oxygen Enrichment
Scramjets are proposed as a second stage for a multi-stage access-to-space system. At present the upper limit of scramjet operation is expected to be Mach 12-14. Use of oxygen enrichment is a possible method for increasing the speed and altitude of scramjet operation. This paper involves mission analysis of scramjets using oxygen enrichment. It follows on from Smart & Tetlow [5], in which trajectory studies of a threestage rocket-scramjet-rocket access-to-space system were conducted. These calculations indicated that the net thrust (scramjet thrust - vehicle drag) of a hypersonic vehicle with three scramjet engine modules was reduced to very low levels above Mach 12. The current work examines the use of oxygen enrichment in the scramjet to increase net thrust above Mach 10. Results of the study indicate that an important effect of oxygen enrichment is to allow scramjet powered vehicle operation at higher altitude
The Maximum Mass of Star Clusters
When an universal untruncated star cluster initial mass function (CIMF)
described by a power-law distribution is assumed, the mass of the most massive
star cluster in a galaxy (M_max) is the result of the size-of-sample (SoS)
effect. This implies a dependence of M_max on the total number of star clusters
(N). The SoS effect also implies that M_max within a cluster population
increases with equal logarithmic intervals of age. This is because the number
of clusters formed in logarithmic age intervals increases (assuming a constant
cluster formation rate). This effect has been observed in the SMC and LMC.
Based on the maximum pressure (P_int) inside molecular clouds, it has been
suggested that a physical maximum mass (M_max[phys]) should exist. The theory
predicts that M_max[phys] should be observable, i.e. lower than M_max that
follows from statistical arguments, in big galaxies with a high star formation
rate. We compare the SoS relations in the SMC and LMC with the ones in M51 and
model the integrated cluster luminosity function (CLF) for two cases: 1) M_max
is determined by the SoS effect and 2) M_max=M_max[phys]=constant. The observed
CLF of M51 and the comparison of the SoS relations with the SMC and LMC both
suggest that there exists a M_max[phys] of 5*10^5 M_sun in M51. The CLF of M51
looks very similar to the one observed in the ``Antennae'' galaxies. A direct
comparison with our model suggests that there M_max[phys]=2*10^6 M_sun.Comment: 4 pages, contribution to "Globular Clusters: Guides to Galaxies",
