Community experiences of organised crime in Scotland
The research explored community experiences of serious organised crime in Scotland (SOC). The report provides information on the nature and extent of the impact of SOC on everyday life in the community, as well as offering suggestions for policy development. The study sought to answer the following questions: 1)What are the relationships that exist between SOC and communities in Scotland? 2)What are the experiences and perceptions of residents, stakeholders and organisations of the scope and nature of SOC within their local area? and 3)How does SOC impact on community wellbeing, and to what extent can the harms associated with SOC be mitigated
PiMA Survey Design and Methodology
The Politics and Interactive Media in Africa (PiMA) project investigates participation in radio and television programmes through new information and communication technologies (ICTs) as it is shaped by the political, social and media context in Zambia and Kenya, as well as the implications of such interactions for democratic governance and poverty alleviation. The empirical research combines different methodologies, including interviews with key informants, focus groups with audience members, in-studio observations and surveys of the general population. This paper describes the methodology for conducting surveys in four sites in Kenya and Zambia. The objective of the surveys was to obtain representative samples of two constituencies per country. Constituencies were selected according to their social and economic characteristics, in order to capture a wide variety of contexts. A random procedure was deployed in all stages of sampling, ensuring representativity of households and individuals of voting age in the four constituencies. The results of the survey can be generalised to the particular constituencies with a margin of error of approximately minus or plus 5% for a 95% confidence interval
Dyons in N=4 Supersymmetric Theories and Three-Pronged Strings
We construct and explore BPS states that preserve 1/4 of supersymmetry in N=4
Yang-Mills theories. Such states are also realized as three-pronged strings
ending on D3-branes. We correct the electric part of the BPS equation and
relate its solutions to the unbroken abelian gauge group generators. Generic
1/4-BPS solitons are not spherically symmetric, but consist of two or more
dyonic components held apart by a delicate balance between static
electromagnetic force and scalar Higgs force. The instability previously found
in three-pronged string configurations is due to excessive repulsion by one of
these static forces. We also present an alternate construction of these 1/4-BPS
states from quantum excitations around a magnetic monopole, and build up the
supermultiplet for arbitrary (quantized) electric charge. The degeneracy and
the highest spin of the supermultiplet increase linearly with a relative
electric charge. We conclude with comments.Comment: 33 pages, two figures, LaTex, a footnote added, the figure caption of

âSlappers like you donât belong in this schoolâ: the educational inclusion/exclusion of pregnant schoolgirls
Policy in England identifies pregnant schoolgirls as a particularly vulnerable group and emphasises the importance of education as a way of improving the life chances of those who become pregnant while young. This paper draws on repeat interviews conducted over a twelve-month period to compare and contrast the stories of four young women. The narratives show that despite a common policy framework, there is great variability between schools in staff attitudes towards and responses to pupil pregnancy which produce different accommodations and support for pregnant girls, and seem likely to produce very different outcomes. We mobilise Iris Marion Youngâs five faces of oppression to conduct a second reading of the stories. This situates the specificity of the girlsâ school experiences into a wider socio-cultural and economic framing and indicates what might be involved in actually initiating and implementing the kinds of changes that the first âface valueâ reading suggests are necessary
Rethinking globalised resistance : feminist activism and critical theorising in international relations
This article argues that a feminist approach to the 'politics of resistance' offers a number of important empirical insights which, in turn, open up lines of theoretical inquiry which critical theorists in IR would do well to explore. Concretely, we draw on our ongoing research into feminist 'anti-globalisation' activism to rethink the nature of the subject of the politics of resistance, the conditions under which resistance emerges and how resistance is enacted and expressed. We begin by discussing the relationship of feminism to critical IR theory as a way of situating and explaining the focus and approach of our research project. We then summarise our key empirical arguments regarding the emergence, structure, beliefs, identities and practices of feminist 'anti-globalisation' activism before exploring the implications of these for a renewed critical theoretical agenda in IR
Orthocomplementation and compound systems
In their 1936 founding paper on quantum logic, Birkhoff and von Neumann
postulated that the lattice describing the experimental propositions concerning
a quantum system is orthocomplemented. We prove that this postulate fails for
the lattice L_sep describing a compound system consisting of so called
separated quantum systems. By separated we mean two systems prepared in
different ``rooms'' of the lab, and before any interaction takes place. In that
case the state of the compound system is necessarily a product state. As a
consequence, Dirac's superposition principle fails, and therefore L_sep cannot
satisfy all Piron's axioms. In previous works, assuming that L_sep is
orthocomplemented, it was argued that L_sep is not orthomodular and fails to
have the covering property. Here we prove that L_sep cannot admit and
orthocomplementation. Moreover, we propose a natural model for L_sep which has
the covering property.Comment: Submitted for the proceedings of the 2004 IQSA's conference in
