    A multivariate framework to study spatio-temporal dependency of electricity load and wind power

    With massive wind power integration, the spatial distribution of electricity load centers and wind power plants make it plausible to study the inter-spatial dependence and temporal correlation for the effective working of the power system. In this paper, a novel multivariate framework is developed to study the spatio-temporal dependency using vine copula. Hourly resolution of load and wind power data obtained from a US regional transmission operator spanning 3 years and spatially distributed in 19 load and two wind power zones are considered in this study. Data collection, in terms of dimension, tends to increase in future, and to tackle this high-dimensional data, a reproducible sampling algorithm using vine copula is developed. The sampling algorithm employs k-means clustering along with singular value decomposition technique to ease the computational burden. Selection of appropriate clustering technique and copula family is realized by the goodness of clustering and goodness of fit tests. The paper concludes with a discussion on the importance of spatio-temporal modeling of load and wind power and the advantage of the proposed multivariate sampling algorithm using vine copula

    Design of coupling for synchronization in time-delayed systems

    We report a design of delay coupling for targeting desired synchronization in delay dynamical systems. We target synchronization, antisynchronization, lag-, antilag- synchronization, amplitude death (or oscillation death) and generalized synchronization in mismatched oscillators. A scaling of the size of an attractor is made possible in different synchronization regimes. We realize a type of mixed synchronization where synchronization, antisynchronization coexist in different pairs of state variables of the coupled system. We establish the stability condition of synchronization using the Krasovskii-Lyapunov function theory and the Hurwitz matrix criterion.     Interactions of local climatic, biotic and hydrogeochemical processes facilitate phosphorus dynamics along an Everglades forest-marsh gradient

    Ecosystem nutrient cycling is often complex because nutrient dynamics within and between systems are mediated by the interaction of biological and geochemical conditions operating at different temporal and spatial scales. Vegetated patches in semiarid and wetland landscapes have been shown to exemplify some of these patterns and processes. We investigated biological and geochemical factors suggested to contribute to phosphorus (P) movement and availability along a forest-marsh gradient in an Everglades tree island. Our study illustrated processes that are consistent with the chemohydrodynamic nutrient (CHNT) hypothesis and the trigger-transfer, pulse-reserve (TTPR) model developed for semiarid systems. Comparison with the TTPR model was constructive as it elaborated several significant patterns and processes of the tree island ecosystem including: (1) concentration of the limiting resource (P) in the source patch (High Head which constitutes the reserve) compared with the resource-poor landscape, (2) soil zone calcite precipitation requiring strong seasonality for evapotranspiration to promote conditions for secondary soil development and calcium phosphate reprecipitation, (3) rewetting of previously dry soils by early wet season precipitation events, and (4) antecedent conditions of the source patch, including landscape position that modulated the effect of the precipitation trigger. Thus, our study showed how water availability drives soil water P dynamics and, potentially, stability of mineral soil P in this tree island ecosystem. In landscapes with extensive water management, these processes can be asynchronous with the seasonality of hydrologic dynamics, tipping the balance between a sink and source of a limiting nutrient

    An Alternative Interpretation of Statistical Mechanics

    In this paper I propose an interpretation of classical statistical mechanics that centers on taking seriously the idea that probability measures represent complete states of statistical mechanical systems. I show how this leads naturally to the idea that the stochasticity of statistical mechanics is associated directly with the observables of the theory rather than with the microstates (as traditional accounts would have it). The usual assumption that microstates are representationally significant in the theory is therefore dispensable, a consequence which suggests interesting possibilities for developing non-equilibrium statistical mechanics and investigating inter-theoretic answers to the foundational questions of statistical mechanics

    Applying Spatial Copula Additive Regression to Breast Cancer Screening Data

    Breast cancer is associated with several risk factors. Although genetics is an important breast cancer risk factor, environmental and sociodemographic characteristics, that may differ across populations, are also factors to be taken into account when studying the disease. These factors, apart from having a role as direct agents in the risk of the disease, can also influence other variables that act as risk factors. The age at menarche and the reproductive lifespan are considered by the literature as breast cancer risk factors so that, there are several studies whose aim is to analyze the trend of age at menarche and menopause along generations. Also, it is believed that these two moments in a woman’s life can be affected by environmental, social status, and lifestyles of women. Using the information of 278,282 registries of women which entered in the breast cancer screening program in Central Portugal, we developed a bivariate copula model to quantify the effect a woman’s year of birth in the association between age at menarche and a woman’s reproductive lifespan, in addition to explore any possible effect of the geographic location in these variables and their association. For this analysis we employ Copula Generalized Additive Models for Location, Scale and Shape (CGAMLSS) models and the inference was carried out using the R package SemiParBIVProbit
