Smoking, dementia and cognitive decline in the elderly, a systematic review.
Background. Nicotine may aid reaction time, learning and memory, but smoking increases cardiovascular risk. Cardiovascular risk factors have been linked to increased risk of dementia. A previous meta-analysis found that current smokers were at higher risk of subsequent dementia, Alzheimers disease, vascular dementia and cognitive decline. Methods. In order to update and examine this further a systematic review and meta-analysis was carried out using different search and inclusion criteria, database selection and more recent publications. Both reviews were restricted to those aged 65 and over. Results. The review reported here found a significantly increased risk of Alzheimers disease with current smoking and a likely but not significantly increased risk of vascular dementia, dementia unspecified and cognitive decline. Neither review found clear relationships with former smoking. Conclusion. Current smoking increases risk of Alzheimers disease and may increase risk of other dementias. This reinforces need for smoking cessation, particularly aged 65 and over. Nicotine alone needs further investigation. Ā© 2008 Peters et al; licensee BioMed Central Ltd
Impact-induced acceleration by obstacles
We explore a surprising phenomenon in which an obstruction accelerates,
rather than decelerates, a moving flexible object. It has been claimed that the
right kind of discrete chain falling onto a table falls \emph{faster} than a
free-falling body. We confirm and quantify this effect, reveal its complicated
dependence on angle of incidence, and identify multiple operative mechanisms.
Prior theories for direct impact onto flat surfaces, which involve a single
constitutive parameter, match our data well if we account for a characteristic
delay length that must impinge before the onset of excess acceleration. Our
measurements provide a robust determination of this parameter. This supports
the possibility of modeling such discrete structures as continuous bodies with
a complicated constitutive law of impact that includes angle of incidence as an

An analog of Gelfand-Levitan-Marchenko integral equations for multi-
dimensional Delsarte transmutation operators is constructed by means of
studying their differential-geometric structure based on the classical Lagrange
identity for a formally conjugated pair of differential operators. An extension
of the method for the case of affine pencils of differential operators is

Friction force microscopy : a simple technique for identifying graphene on rough substrates and mapping the orientation of graphene grains on copper
At a single atom thick, it is challenging to distinguish graphene from its substrate using conventional techniques. In this paper we show that friction force microscopy (FFM) is a simple and quick technique for identifying graphene on a range of samples, from growth substrates to rough insulators. We show that FFM is particularly effective for characterizing graphene grown on copper where it can correlate the graphene growth to the three-dimensional surface topography. Atomic lattice stickāslip friction is readily resolved and enables the crystallographic orientation of the graphene to be mapped nondestructively, reproducibly and at high resolution. We expect FFM to be similarly effective for studying graphene growth on other metal/locally crystalline substrates, including SiC, and for studying growth of other two-dimensional materials such as molybdenum disulfide and hexagonal boron nitride
Electro-Mechanical Fredericks Effects in Nematic Gels
The solid nematic equivalent of the Fredericks transition is found to depend
on a critical field rather than a critical voltage as in the classical case.
This arises because director anchoring is principally to the solid rubbery
matrix of the nematic gel rather than to the sample surfaces. Moreover, above
the threshold field, we find a competition between quartic (soft) and
conventional harmonic elasticity which dictates the director response. By
including a small degree of initial director misorientation, the calculated
field variation of optical anisotropy agrees well with the conoscopy
measurements of Chang et al (Phys.Rev.E56, 595, 1997) of the electro-optical

United States benefits of improved worldwide wheat crop information from a LANDSAT system
The value of worldwide information improvements on wheat crops, promised by LANDSAT, is measured in the context of world wheat markets. These benefits are based on current LANDSAT technical goals and assume that information is made available to all (United States and other countries) at the same time. A detailed empirical sample demonstration of the effect of improved information is given; the history of wheat commodity prices for 1971-72 is reconstructed and the price changes from improved vs. historical information are compared. The improved crop forecasting from a LANDSAT system assumed include wheat crop estimates of 90 percent accuracy for each major wheat producing region. Accurate, objective worldwide wheat crop information using space systems may have a very stabilizing influence on world commodity markets, in part making possible the establishment of long-term, stable trade relationships
Natural cytotoxicity of haemopoietic cell populations against murine lymphoid tumours.
Homozygous nude and normal mice of 3 strains, BALB/c, CBA and C57BL, were used as sources of nucleated haemopoietic "natural killer" (NK) cells. These killer cells could lyse a wide range of syngeneic and allogeneic lymphoid tumour cell lines in vitro, and it was found that cell suspensions from nude mice were always significantly more active than those from normal mice, and that the most active effector population was a polymorph-enriched peritoneal-exudate cell suspension. Eosinophils did not appear to be involved in the phenomenon, and mononuclear peritoneal-exudate cell suspensions were actually highly inhibitory. Three non-lymphoid tumours, a carcinoma, a fibrosarcoma and a mastocytoma, were totally resistant to in vitro lysis. Although all susceptible tumour cell lines were C-type virus-associated, not all of these tumours were killed by all strain sources of spleen cells, indicating a specificity of killing
Incomplete neutralization and other sub-phonemic durational differences in production and perception: Evidence from Dutch
Words which are expected to contain the same surface string of segments may, under identical prosodic circumstances, sometimes be realized with slight differences in duration. Some researchers have attributed such effects to differences in the wordsā underlying forms (incomplete neutralization), while others have suggested orthographic influence and extremely careful speech as the cause. In this paper, we demonstrate such sub-phonemic durational differences in Dutch, a language which some past research has found not to have such effects. Past literature has also shown that listeners can often make use of incomplete neutralization to distinguish apparent homophones. We extend perceptual investigations of this topic, and show that listeners can perceive even durational differences which are not consistently observed in production. We further show that a difference which is primarily orthographic rather than underlying can also create such durational differences. We conclude that a wide variety of factors, in addition to underlying form, can induce speakers to produce slight durational differences which listeners can also use in perception
