    Inducing energy gaps in graphene monolayer and bilayer

    In this paper we propose a mechanism for the induction of energy gaps in the spectrum of graphene and its bilayer, when both these materials are covered with water and ammonia molecules. The energy gaps obtained are within the range 20-30 meV, values compatible to those found in experimental studies of graphene bilayer. We further show that the binding energies are large enough for the adsorption of the molecules to be maintained even at room temperature

    Representation-theoretic derivation of the Temperley-Lieb-Martin algebras

    Explicit expressions for the Temperley-Lieb-Martin algebras, i.e., the quotients of the Hecke algebra that admit only representations corresponding to Young diagrams with a given maximum number of columns (or rows), are obtained, making explicit use of the Hecke algebra representation theory.     Anomalous Thermal Stability of Metastable C_20 Fullerene

    The results of computer simulation of the dynamics of fullerene C_20 at different temperatures are presented. It is shown that, although it is metastable, this isomer is very stable with respect to the transition to a lower energy configuration and retains its chemical structure under heating to very high temperatures, T ~ 3000 K. Its decay activation energy is found to be E_a ~ 7 eV. Possible decay channels are studied, and the height of the minimum potential barrier to decay is determined to be U = 5.0 eV. The results obtained make it possible to understand the reasons for the anomalous stability of fullerene C_20 under normal conditions.Comment: Slightly corrected version of the paper submitted to Phys.     Vortex Rings and Lieb Modes in a Cylindrical Bose-Einstein Condensate

    We present a calculation of a solitary wave propagating along a cylindrical Bose-Einstein trap, which is found to be a hybrid of a one-dimensional (1D) soliton and a three-dimensional (3D) vortex ring. The calculated energy-momentum dispersion exhibits characteristics similar to those of a mode proposed sometime ago by Lieb within a 1D model, as well as some rotonlike features.Comment: 4 pages, 4 figure

    The vibrational analysis of cyclopentanone

    The infrared and Raman spectra of cyclopentanone, ααα'α'-d4-cyclopentanone, βββ'β'-d4-cyclopentanone and dB-cyclopentanone have been measured and a normal co-ordinate analysis performed based on a twisted C2, conformation. The 36 normal vibrations were computed using a selective valence force field comprising 16 diagonal and 16 off-diagonal force constants. The 4 isotopic species provided 144 frequencies to refine 15 diagonal force constants. The initial values of the constants were transferred from a force field for cyclohexanone computed in this laboratory. The infrared and Raman spectra were analyzed in terms of the potential energy distribution coefficients categorized as group frequencies, zone frequencies, and delocalized frequencies

    <i>‘What retention’ means to me</i>: the position of the adult learner in student retention

    Studies of student retention and progression overwhelmingly appear adopt definitions that place the institution, rather than the student, at the centre. Retention is most often conceived in terms of linear and continuous progress between institutionally identified start and end points. This paper reports on research that considered data from 38 in-depth interviews conducted with individuals who had characteristics often associated with non-traditional engagement in higher education who between 2006 and 2010 had studied an ‘Introduction to HE’ module at one distance higher education institution, some of whom had progressed to further study at that institution, some of whom had not. The research deployed a life histories approach to seek a finer grained understanding of how individuals conceptualise their own learning journey and experience, in order to reflect on institutional conceptions of student retention. The findings highlight potential anomalies hidden within institutional retention rates – large proportions of the interview participants who were not ‘retained’ by the institution reported successful progression to and in other learning institutions and environments, both formal and informal. Nearly all described positive perspectives on lifelong learning which were either engendered or improved by the learning undertaken. This attests to the complexity of individuals’ lives and provides clear evidence that institution-centric definitions of retention and progression are insufficient to create truly meaningful understanding of successful individual learning journeys and experiences. It is argued that only through careful consideration of the lived experience of students and a re-conception of measures of retention, will we be able to offer real insight into improving student retention

    Self-diffusion coefficients of charged particles: Prediction of Nonlinear volume fraction dependence

    We report on calculations of the translational and rotational short-time self-diffusion coefficients DstD^t_s and DsrD^r_s for suspensions of charge-stabilized colloidal spheres. These diffusion coefficients are affected by electrostatic forces and many-body hydrodynamic interactions (HI). Our computations account for both two-body and three-body HI. For strongly charged particles, we predict interesting nonlinear scaling relations Dst1atϕ4/3D^t_s\propto 1-a_t\phi^{4/3} and Dsr1arϕ2D^r_s\propto 1-a_r\phi^2 depending on volume fraction ϕ\phi, with essentially charge-independent parameters ata_t and ara_r. These scaling relations are strikingly different from the corresponding results for hard spheres. Our numerical results can be explained using a model of effective hard spheres. Moreover, we perceptibly improve the known result for DstD^t_s of hard sphere suspensions.Comment: 8 pages, LaTeX, 3 Postscript figures included using eps

    Pade approximations of solitary wave solutions of the Gross-Pitaevskii equation

    Pade approximants are used to find approximate vortex solutions of any winding number in the context of Gross-Pitaevskii equation for a uniform condensate and condensates with axisymmetric trapping potentials. Rational function and generalised rational function approximations of axisymmetric solitary waves of the Gross-Pitaevskii equation are obtained in two and three dimensions. These approximations are used to establish a new mechanism of vortex nucleation as a result of solitary wave interactions.Comment: In press by Journal of Physics: Mathematics and Genera

    Open string theory and planar algebras

    In this note we show that abstract planar algebras are algebras over the topological operad of moduli spaces of stable maps with Lagrangian boundary conditions, which in the case of the projective line are described in terms of real rational functions. These moduli spaces appear naturally in the formulation of open string theory on the projective line. We also show two geometric ways to obtain planar algebras from real algebraic geometry, one based on string topology and one on Gromov-Witten theory. In particular, through the well known relation between planar algebras and subfactors, these results establish a connection between open string theory, real algebraic geometry, and subfactors of von Neumann algebras.Comment: 13 pages, LaTeX, 7 eps figure

    Three-Dimensional Integrable Models and Associated Tangle Invariants

    In this paper we show that the Boltzmann weights of the three-dimensional Baxter-Bazhanov model give representations of the braid group, if some suitable spectral limits are taken. In the trigonometric case we classify all possible spectral limits which produce braid group representations. Furthermore we prove that for some of them we get cyclotomic invariants of links and for others we obtain tangle invariants generalizing the cyclotomic ones.Comment: Number of pages: 21, Latex fil
