Personality dynamics at work: The effects of form, time, and context of variability
The study aimed to investigate the status of within-person state variability in neuroticism and conscientiousness as individual differences constructs by exploring their (a) temporal stability, (b) cross-context consistency, (c) empirical links to selected antecedents, and (d) empirical links to longer-term trait variability. Employing a sample of professionals (N = 346) from Australian organizations, personality state data together with situation appraisals were collected using experience sampling methodology in field and repeatedly in lab-like settings. Data on personality traits, cognitive ability, and motivational mindsets were collected at baseline and after two years. Contingent (situation contingencies) and noncontingent (relative SD) state variability indices were relatively stable over time and across contexts. Only a small number of predictive effects of state variability were observed, and these differed across contexts. Cognitive ability appeared to be associated with state variability under lab-like conditions. There was limited evidence of links between short-term state and long-term trait variability, except for a small effect for neuroticism. Some evidence of positive manifold was found for non-contingent variability. Systematic efforts are required to further elucidate the complex pattern of results regarding the antecedents, correlates and outcomes of individual differences in state variability
How unprovable is Rabin's decidability theorem?
We study the strength of set-theoretic axioms needed to prove Rabin's theorem
on the decidability of the MSO theory of the infinite binary tree. We first
show that the complementation theorem for tree automata, which forms the
technical core of typical proofs of Rabin's theorem, is equivalent over the
moderately strong second-order arithmetic theory to a
determinacy principle implied by the positional determinacy of all parity games
and implying the determinacy of all Gale-Stewart games given by boolean
combinations of sets. It follows that complementation for
tree automata is provable from - but not -comprehension.
We then use results due to MedSalem-Tanaka, M\"ollerfeld and
Heinatsch-M\"ollerfeld to prove that over -comprehension, the
complementation theorem for tree automata, decidability of the MSO theory of
the infinite binary tree, positional determinacy of parity games and
determinacy of Gale-Stewart games are all
equivalent. Moreover, these statements are equivalent to the
-reflection principle for -comprehension. It follows in
particular that Rabin's decidability theorem is not provable in

The First INTEGRAL AGN Catalog
We present the first INTEGRAL AGN catalog, based on observations performed
from launch of the mission in October 2002 until January 2004. The catalog
includes 42 AGN, of which 10 are Seyfert 1, 17 are Seyfert 2, and 9 are
intermediate Seyfert 1.5. The fraction of blazars is rather small with 5
detected objects, and only one galaxy cluster and no star-burst galaxies have
been detected so far. A complete subset consists of 32 AGN with a significance
limit of 7 sigma in the INTEGRAL/ISGRI 20-40 keV data. Although the sample is
not flux limited, the distribution of sources shows a ratio of obscured to
unobscured AGN of 1.5 - 2.0, consistent with luminosity dependent unified
models for AGN. Only four Compton-thick AGN are found in the sample. Based on
the INTEGRAL data presented here, the Seyfert 2 spectra are slightly harder
(Gamma = 1.95 +- 0.01) than Seyfert 1.5 (Gamma = 2.10 +- 0.02) and Seyfert 1

Whirlpool: Improving Dynamic Cache Management with Static Data Classification
Cache hierarchies are increasingly non-uniform and difficult to manage. Several techniques, such as scratchpads or reuse hints, use static information about how programs access data to manage the memory hierarchy. Static techniques are effective on regular programs, but because they set fixed policies, they are vulnerable to changes in program behavior or available cache space. Instead, most systems rely on dynamic caching policies that adapt to observed program behavior. Unfortunately, dynamic policies spend significant resources trying to learn how programs use memory, and yet they often perform worse than a static policy. We present Whirlpool, a novel approach that combines static information with dynamic policies to reap the benefits of each. Whirlpool statically classifies data into pools based on how the program uses memory. Whirlpool then uses dynamic policies to tune the cache to each pool. Hence, rather than setting policies statically, Whirlpool uses static analysis to guide dynamic policies. We present both an API that lets programmers specify pools manually and a profiling tool that discovers pools automatically in unmodified binaries.
We evaluate Whirlpool on a state-of-the-art NUCA cache. Whirlpool significantly outperforms prior approaches: on sequential programs, Whirlpool improves performance by up to 38% and reduces data movement energy by up to 53%; on parallel programs, Whirlpool improves performance by up to 67% and reduces data movement energy by up to 2.6x.National Science Foundation (U.S.) (grant CCF-1318384)National Science Foundation (U.S.) (CAREER-1452994)Samsung (Firm) (GRO award
INTEGRAL and XMM-Newton Spectral Studies of NGC 4388
We present first INTEGRAL and XMM-Newton observations of a Seyfert galaxy,
the type 2 AGN NGC 4388. Several INTEGRAL observations performed in 2003 allow
us to study the spectrum in the 20 - 300 keV range. In addition two XMM-Newton
observations give detailed insight into the 0.2 - 10 keV emission. The
measurements presented here and comparison with previous observations by
BeppoSAX, SIGMA and CGRO/OSSE show that the overall spectrum from soft X-rays
up to the gamma-rays can be described by a highly absorbed (N_H = 2.7e23
1/cm^2) and variable non-thermal component in addition to constant non-absorbed
thermal emission (T = 0.8 keV) of low abundance (7% solar), plus a constant Fe
K-alpha and K-beta line. The hard X-ray component is well described by a simple
power law with a mean photon index of 1.7. During the INTEGRAL observations the
20 - 100 keV flux increased by a factor of 1.4. The analysis of XMM-Newton data
implies that the emission below 3 keV is decoupled from the AGN and probably
due to extended emission as seen in Chandra observations. The constant iron
line emission is apparently also decoupled from the direct emission of the
central engine and likely to be generated in the obscuring material, e.g. in

The Second INTEGRAL AGN Catalogue
The INTEGRAL mission provides a large data set for studying the hard X-ray
properties of AGN and allows testing of the unified scheme for AGN. We present
analysis of INTEGRAL IBIS/ISGRI, JEM-X, and OMC data for 199 AGN supposedly
detected by INTEGRAL above 20 keV. The data analysed here allow a significant
spectral extraction on 148 objects and an optical variability study of 57 AGN.
The slopes of the hard X-ray spectra of Seyfert 1 and Seyfert~2 galaxies are
found to be consistent within the uncertainties, whereas higher cut-off
energies and lower luminosities are measured for the more absorbed / type 2
AGN. The intermediate Seyfert 1.5 objects exhibit hard X-ray spectra consistent
with those of Seyfert 1. When applying a Compton reflection model, the
underlying continua appear the same in Seyfert 1 and 2 with photon index 2, and
the reflection strength is about R = 1, when assuming different inclination
angles. A significant correlation is found between the hard X-ray and optical
luminosity and the mass of the central black hole in the sense that the more
luminous objects appear to be more massive. There is also a general trend
toward the absorbed sources and type 2 AGN having lower Eddington ratios. The
black holemass appears to form a fundamental plane together with the optical
and X-ray luminosity of the form Lv being proportional to Lx^0.6 M^0.2, similar
to that found between radio luminosity Lr, Lx, and M. The unified model for
Seyfert galaxies seems to hold, showing in hard X-rays that the central engine
is the same in Seyfert 1 and 2, but seen under different inclination angles and

GI2T/REGAIN spectro-interferometry with a new infrared beam combiner
We have built an infrared beam combiner for the GI2T/REGAIN interferometer of
the Observatoire de la Cote d'Azur. The beam combiner allows us to record
spectrally dispersed Michelson interference fringes in the near-infrared J-, H-
or K-bands. The beam combiner has the advantage that Michelson interferograms
can simultaneously be recorded in about 128 different spectral channels. The
tilt of the spectrally dispersed fringes is a measure of the instantaneous
optical path difference. We present the optical design of the beam combiner and
GI2T/REGAIN observations of the Mira star R Cas with this beam combiner in the
spectral range of 2.00 micron - 2.18 micron (observations on 22 and 25 August
1999; variability phase 0.08; V-magnitude approx. 6; seven baselines between
12m and 24m; reference stars Vega and Beta Peg). The spectrograph of the beam
combiner consists of an anamorphotic cylindrical lens system, an image plane
slit, and a grism. A system of digital signal processors calculates the
ensemble average power spectrum of the spectrally dispersed Michelson
interferograms and the instantaneous optical path difference error in real
time. From the observed R Cas visibilities at baselines 12.0m, 13.8m and 13.9m,
a 2.1 micron uniform-disk diameter of 25.3mas +/-3.3mas was derived. The
unusually high visibility values at baselines >16m show that the stellar
surface of R Cas is more complex than previously assumed. The visibility values
at baselines >16m can be explained by high-contrast surface structure on the
stellar surface of R Cas or other types of unexpected center-to-limb
variations. The R Cas observations were compared with theoretical Mira star
models yielding a linear Rosseland radius of 276Rsun +/-66Rsun and an effective
temperature of 2685K+/-238K for R Cas at phase 0.08.Comment: 10 pages, 6 figures, see also
