Spiral groove seal
Mating flat surfaces inhibit leakage of a fluid around a stationary shaft. A spiral groove produces a pumping action toward the fluid when the shaft rotates. This prevents leakage while a generated hydraulic lifting force separates the mating surfaces to minimize wear. Provision is made for placing these spiral grooves in communication with the fluid to accelerate the generation of the hydraulic lifting force

Comparative tests of modified and unmodified carbon ring seals showed that addition of helical grooves to conventional segmented carbon ring seals reduced leakage significantly. Modified seal was insensitive to shaft runout and to flooding by lubricant
Improved circumferential shaft seal for aircraft gear transmissions
Operation under simulated aircraft transmission conditions of speeds to 2850 m/min (9350 ft/min), lubricant temperatures to 394 K (250 F), shaft radial runouts to 0.254 mm (0.010 in.) F.I.R. (full indicator reading), and pressure differentials to 1.03 N/cm2 (1.5 psi) revealed that conventional circumferential seals leaked excessively. Modifying the conventional seal by adding helical grooves to the seal bore reduced leakage rates to within the acceptable level of 10 cm3/hr. The leakage rate of this modified seal was not significantly affected by lubricant flooding or by shaft radial runout
Fluorine Abundances of Galactic Low-Metallicity Giants
With abundances and 2{\sigma} upper limits of fluorine (F) in seven
metal-poor field giants, nucleosynthesis of stellar F at low metallicity is
discussed. The measurements are derived from the HF(1-0) R9 line at 23358{\AA}
using nearinfrared K-band high-resolution spectra obtained with CRIRES at the
Very Large Telescope. The sample reaches lower metallicities than previous
studies on F of field giants, ranging from [Fe/H] = -1.56 down to -2.13.
Effects of three-dimensional model atmospheres on the derived F and O
abundances are quantitatively estimated and shown to be insignificant for the
program stars. The observed F yield in the form of [F/O] is compared with two
sets of Galactic chemical evolution models, which quantitatively demonstrate
the contribution of Type II supernova (SN II) {\nu}-process and asymptotic
giant branch/Wolf-Rayet stars. It is found that at this low-metallicity region,
models cannot well predict the observed distribution of [F/O], while the
observations are better fit by models considering an SN II {\nu}-process with a
neutrino energy of E_{\nu} = 3 x 10^53 erg. Our sample contains HD 110281, a
retrograde orbiting low-{\alpha} halo star, showing a similar F evolution as
globular clusters. This supports the theory that such halo stars are possibly

Semiparametric Analysis of the Socio-Demographic and Spatial Determinants of Undernutrition in Two African Countries
We estimate semiparametric regression models of chronic undernutrition (stunting) using the 1992 Demographic and Health Surveys (DHS) from Tanzania and Zambia. We focus particularly on the influence of the child's age, the mother's body mass index, and spatial influences on chronic undernutrition. Conventional parametric regression models are not flexible enough to cope with possibly nonlinear effects of the continuous covariates and cannot flexibly model spatial influences. We present a Bayesian semiparametric analysis of the effects of these two covariates on chronic undernutrition. Moreover, we investigate spatial determinants of undernutrition in these two countries. Compared to previous work with a simple fixed effects approach for the influence of provinces, we model small scale district specific effects using flexible spatial priors. Inference is fully Bayesian and uses recent Markov chain Monte Carlo techniques
Galacto-forensic of LMC's orbital history as a probe for the dark matter potential in the outskirt of the Galaxy
The 3D observed velocities of the Large and Small Magellanic Clouds(LMC and
SMC) provide an opportunity to probe the Galactic potential in the outskirt of
the Galactic halo. Based on a canonical NFW model of the Galactic potential,
Besla et al.(2007) reconstructed LMC and SMC's orbits and suggested that they
are currently on their first perigalacticon passage about the Galaxy. Motivated
by several recent revisions of the Sun's motion around the Galactic center, we
re-examine the LMC's orbital history and show that it depends sensitively on
the dark-matter's mass distribution beyond its present Galactic distance. We
utilize results of numerical simulations to consider a range of possible
structural and evolutionary models for the Galactic potentials. We find that
within the theoretical and observational uncertainties, it is possible for the
LMC to have had multiple perigalacticon passages on the Hubble time scale,
especially if the Galactic circular velocity at the location of the Sun is
greater than km s. Based on these models, a more accurate
determination of the LMC's motion may be used to determine the dark matter

Tradable SO-2-permits in the European Union: a practicable scheme for public utilities
In this paper, a practicable scheme of SO2-emission permits for European power producers is developed. Background is the second UN-ECE Sulphur Protocol from 1994 (Protocol of Oslo). After discussing some theoretical models of spatially differentiated permit schemes, evaluating the U.S. Acid Rain and RECLAIM Program, and considering the setting in the EU-15 countries, a scheme of locally undifferentiated emission permits is proposed which is distinguished by a high degree of both economic efficiency and market functioning. However, as our model simulations indicate, national deposition targets will be violated in all probability due to the scheme?s missing differentiation regarding the receptors. The risk of hot spots is addressed adequately by a differentiated bundle of countermeasures. The general economic impact of an EU-wide permit scheme is low, and, in terms of change in GDP, lower compared to a non-coordinated SO2 policy. The proposed mode of the initial permit allocation allows for early price signals and guarantees maximum static and dynamic efficiency. Balancing the interests of existing and new emitters, a long-term transition from the grandfathering to the free auction procedure is chosen. --
Overwintering Birds Observed Along The Mackenzie-Great Slave Lake Highways
The Rae and Heart Lake regions fall within the Hay River, Upper Mackenzie and northwestern transition sections of the transcontinental boreal forest region and mostly within the Canadian life zone. The subarctic climate is characterized by long cold winters, short warm summers and light precipitation. Of approx 105 bird species that breed in these areas, only 13 species overwinter.
