    Sugar apple seedling production as a function of substrates and slow-release fertilizer

    There is still a lack of studies on the effect of slow-release fertilizers and substrates on the production of high-quality sugar apple seedlings. In this context, the present study aimed to evaluate the quality and biomass of sugar apple seedlings grown in organic substrates at doses of slow-release fertilizer. The experimental design was randomized blocks in split-plot scheme, with four replicates and eleven plants per plot. Substrates were evaluated in the plots (fresh sugarcane bagasse; enriched sugarcane bagasse; coconut powder; commercial organic substrate Tropstrato®), whereas the doses of the slow-release fertilizer Osmocote® were evaluated in the subplots (0; 3; 6; 9; 12 and 15 kg m-3 of substrate). Substrates and slow-release fertilizer doses had effect on the formation of sugar apple seedlings. The effect of slow-release fertilizer is influenced by the substrate used in the formation of sugar apple seedlings. The substrate coconut powder showed the best performance for E%, NL and LAI in sugar apple plants, which reinforces its recommendation to be used in seedling production.     Brazilian solar saltworks - ancient uses and future possibilities

    Coastal solar saltworks of Brazil are exploited for sea salt, which becomes progressively concentrated by evaporation. This study aimed to review the current and new potential uses of these systems, in order to provide more dynamic for this activity. The first evaporation ponds are also used for artisanal fisheries, ensuring the livelihood of many families. All the brine rich in secondary salts (bittern) can be widely used by the chemical industry, while the Brazil shows an incipient production of "flower of salt", a salt with distinct characteristics with higher market value than sodium chloride. On the other hand, the saltponds have a high potential for management and obtaining of large populations of Artemia spp., purifying the brine through the action as biological filter. This microcrustacean occurs naturally in intermediate salinity ponds, being commonly used in aquaculture. Species of microalgae and halobacteria found in the saltworks are employed for extraction of beta-carotene and glycerol, used in an extensive list of products with high commercial value. These ecosystems represent refuge zones for many species of migratory birds, becoming imperative to promote the conservation of these hypersaline wetlands

    Comportamento ingestivo de ovinos recebendo dieta à base de palma forrageira e feno de atriplex.

    O trabalho teve por objetivo avaliar o comportamento ingestivo de ovinos recebendo dieta à base de palma forrageira (73;54,8; 36,5; 8,3e 0,0%), feno de atriplex (0;12,5; 25,0; 37,5e 50,0%), e concentrado (farelo de soja, farelo de milho e uréia) em diferentes proporções na dieta. Foram utilizados cinco ovinos, fistulados no rúmen, com peso médio de 60 kg, alojados em baias individuais, distribuídos no delineamento quadrado latino 5 X 5 (5 animais X 5 dietas X 5 períodos). As observações comportamentais foram realizadas no sétimo dia de adaptação a dieta experimental em intervalos de cinco minutos durante24h. Verificou-se diferença significativa (p0,05) entre as dietas,com o valores de108, 133, 151, 150e 132minutos para os níveis de 0;12,5; 25,0; 37,5e 50,0% de feno de atriplex
