    Intermolecular interactions in N-(ferrocenylmethyl)anthracene-9-carboxamide

    Get PDF
The title compound, [Fe(C₅H₅)(C₂₁H₁₆NO)], was synthesized from the coupling reaction of anthracene-9-carboxylic acid and ferrocenylmethylamine. The ferrocenyl (Fc) group and the anthracene ring system both lie approximately orthogonal to the amide moiety. An amide-amide interaction (along the a axis) is the principal interaction [N...O = 2.910 (2) Å]. A C-H...π(arene) interaction [C...centroid = 3.573 (2) Å] and a C-H...O interaction [C...O = 3.275 (3) Å] complete the hydrogen bonding; two short (Fc)C...C(anthracene) contacts are also present

The fast track refugee assessment process and the mental health of vulnerable asylum seekers

On 5 December 2014, the Australian Senate passed the Maritime Powers Legislation Amendment (Resolving the Asylum Legacy Caseload) Bill 2014 (Cth). This article discusses the intersections between an aspect of the new law – the ‘fast track assessment’ Refugee Status Determination (RSD) procedure, mental ill health and vulnerability of asylum seekers. Insecure visa status, post-arrival stressors and living in constant uncertainty and fear of rejection and repatriation are known to compound existing pre-migration trauma for asylum seekers. The ‘fast track assessment’ procedure, in which a large number of asylum seekers' claims for protection will be processed under the new law, suggests a likely worsening of mental distress, despair and deterioration. The combined nature of mental health and legal support are an increasing feature of a co-ordinated and much needed integrated response to assist vulnerable asylum seekers living in the community. It is suggested that asylum seekers with an existing mental health condition who receive negative outcomes during the RSD process are particularly vulnerable. All asylum seekers should have mental health support made available to them when visa decisions are handed down or shortly afterwards

Filling a theoretical void: The lived experiences of “coloured” women as mathematics educators in higher education

Thanks to intense prohibition and regulation of access to higher education during apartheid, a significant number of teachers from historically marginalised groups did not necessarily enter the profession as a first choice or as a desirable profession. Instead, post-schooling choices were based on access and financial support, restricting many marginalised groups to enrol at teacher training colleges. Beyond schools, there were no career pathways for “coloured”, “black”, and “Indian” teachers to teach at a higher education level. In mathematics education, the challenges experienced by “coloured” women are especially pronounced yet unexplored. To date, the dominant literature has leaned towards a negative portrayal, informed by stereotypical imagery and caricature. By exploring the lived experiences of six “coloured” women, who succeeded in establishing themselves as mathematics educators in higher education, the article is driven by a twofold imperative. On the one hand, it seeks to highlight the intersectional barriers of discrimination and marginalisation encountered by these women during apartheid and democratic South Africa. On the other hand, the article is interested in filling the theoretical void on the lives and capabilities of “coloured” women as mathematics educators in higher education

Toward Intimacy in User Experience: Enduring Interaction in the Use of Computational Objects

Affective aspects of user experience, like friendliness and pleasantness, are said to be too subjective to be assessed by user-evaluation approaches. This paper connects the issue of affectivity to bodily experience, providing a theoretical reflection on the topic of engagingness in terms of sensory perception, motor action, and cognitive operation. It introduces the idea of “enduring interaction,” grounded in phenomenology in philosophy, to refer to the phenomenon of continuingly engaging interaction within constantly changing computational environments, as opposed to the discrete, conversational type of computer- human interaction. Enduring interaction emphasizes the temporal pattern of user engagement with an interactive system. The author argues this new design perspective would lead to intimacy, which explains a user’s affection for a design. With design exemplars from mechanical and digital artifacts, the paper shows how the framework assists in analyzing user experience of varying intimacy and opens up possibilities for creating more affective computational artifacts

Mental health and legal representation for asylum seekers in the ‘legacy caseload’

    Get PDF
This article examines the legal challenges asylum seekers arriving by boat to Australia experience when seeking assistance with their claims and its impact on their mental health. The authors outline the experiences of asylum seekers in the “legacy caseload” group who have been waiting up to four years to have their protection claims assessed. The complex interplay between legal assistance to support refugee claims and the way those making claims inevitably struggle to understand, engage and participate in the process is analysed. It is argued that provision of legal assistance for this group will be essential to ensuring that the refugee status determination process is fair and allows asylum seekers to understand and participate more fully in the process. Recent changes to the assessment of claims combined with a reduction in funding for legal assistance create significant hurdles and combine to compound existing stress and emotional trauma leading to detrimental outcomes on the mental health of asylum seekers

Introduction: What is New and Digital Media?

    Get PDF
First edition The word media, the plural term for medium, covers a broad spectrum describing communications through television, film, radio, and print. Media require a viewer, a listener, a reader, or a spectator to carry any effect whatsoever. In our rapidly advancing hypermedia landscape of the present, where all traditional media have become singular on the screen-based Internet, the reader, viewer, and listener can participate as as well and truly use media as communication. Technology has inevitably transformed our traditional media into a multitude of interactive platforms, now read and listened to on mobile devices, tablets, e-readers, flat screens, and wearable devices. Whether it\u27s media consumption, the form of the content, or the interaction with the media, the Internet changed the habits of citizens globally. We are now ever connected, ever participating, and consuming film, television, music, news, radio, and millions of native websites
