    CHOLESTATIC LIVER FIBROSIS IN A RAT MODEL OF BILE DUCT LIGATION: EVALUATING BIOCHEMICAL VERSUS HISTOPATHOLOGICAL CHANGES

    Objective: Bile duct ligation (BDL), chronic liver injury model, was extensively used in studying mechanisms of fibrogenesis and antifibrotic agents. Considering the liver regenerative capacity and the diverse results from BDL, the present study aimed to evaluate the biochemical and histopathological changes over 10 weeks following BDL assessing if BDL-induced changes remain in a deterioration state or improve at a certain stage.Methods: Sham operation and BDL were conducted in Male Wistar rats. Serum AST, ALT, total bilirubin and albumin and hepatic hydroxyproline (HYP), reduced glutathione (GSH) and malondialdehyde (MDA) were measured in sham-operated (n=3) and BDL-rats (n=6) at 0, 1, 2, 4, 6, 8 and 10 weeks following operation. Liver tissue was also processed for histopathological analysis (H&E and Sirus red staining).Results: Progressive liver injury (H&E) and collagen deposition (Sirus red and HYP) in BDL-rats were observed starting from the first week post-operation and reached their maximum with early signs of cirrhosis on the 10th week of BDL. Severe and sustained cholestatic injury appeared in 2 weeks (increased ALT, AST, bilirubin along with decreased albumin (P<0.001) compared to sham-operated rats). AST peaked on first week, however, bilirubin, ALT and MDA peaked on the 4th week (P<0.001) then gradually decreased compared to their peaks.Conclusion: The relative improvement in liver function/cholestasis following their peaks in BDL model despite progression of fibrosis and hepatic injury require investigators using this model to consider not only biochemical, but also histopathological findings to guarantee an accurate interpretation of their results.Â

    Chicory abrogates oxidative stress, inflammation and caspase-dependent apoptosis in acute hepatic injury model induced by acetaminophen in rats

    In this study the protective effect of chicory leaves hydroalcoholic extract (CIE) against acute liver injury induced by a single dose of acetaminophen (700 mg/kg, i.p.) was investigated in rats. The CIE and silymarin treatment (standard reference) were given in a dose of (100 mg/kg, p.o.) for 3 days before and at 1 and 12 h following acetaminophen administration. Treatment with CIE significantly reduced the levels of serum ALT, AST, alkaline phosphatase, bilirubin, total cholesterol, triglycerides, urea, creatinine, TNF-α and hepatic contents of malondialdehyde (MDA), nitric oxide, caspase-3 and hydroxyproline, with significant increases in serum total protein, albumin, HDL- cholesterol and hepatic activities of reduced glutathione (GSH), superoxide dismutase (SOD) and catalase (CAT) as compared with the acetaminophen group. The histopathological alterations mediated by acetaminophen were ameliorated by CIE. It was concluded that CIE protects rat liver against acetaminophen hepatotoxicity, most probably through abrogation of oxidative stress, inflammation and caspase-3 dependent apoptosis

    Merging Galaxies in the SDSS EDR

    We present a new catalog of merging galaxies obtained through an automated systematic search routine. The 1479 new pairs of merging galaxies were found in approximately 462 sq deg of the Sloan Digital Sky Survey Early Data Release (SDSS EDR; Stoughton et al. 2002) photometric data, and the pair catalog is complete for galaxies in the magnitude range 16.0 <= g* <= 20. The selection algorithm, implementing a variation on the original Karachentsev (1972) criteria, proved to be very efficient and fast. Merging galaxies were selected such that the inter-galaxy separations were less than the sum of the component galaxies' radii. We discuss the characteristics of the sample in terms of completeness, pair separation, and the Holmberg effect. We also present an online atlas of images for the SDSS EDR pairs obtained using the corrected frames from the SDSS EDR database. The atlas images also include the relevant data for each pair member. This catalog will be useful for conducting studies of the general characteristics of merging galaxies, their environments, and their component galaxies. The redshifts for a subset of the interacting and merging galaxies and the distribution of angular sizes for these systems indicate the SDSS provides a much deeper sample than almost any other wide-area catalog to date.Comment: 58 pages, which includes 15 figures and 6 tables.     The potential use of service-oriented infrastructure framework to enable transparent vertical scalability of cloud computing infrastructure

    Cloud computing technology has become familiar to most Internet users. Subsequently, there has been an increased growth in the use of cloud computing, including Infrastructure as a Service (IaaS). To ensure that IaaS can easily meet the growing demand, IaaS providers usually increase the capacity of their facilities in a vertical IaaS increase capability and the capacity for local IaaS amenities such as increasing the number of servers, storage and network bandwidth. However, at the same time, horizontal scalability is sometimes not enough and requires additional strategies to ensure that the large number of IaaS service requests can be met. Therefore, strategies requiring horizontal scalability are more complex than the vertical scalability strategies because they involve the interaction of more than one facility at different service centers. To reduce the complexity of the implementation of the horizontal scalability of the IaaS infrastructures, the use of a technology service oriented infrastructure is recommended to ensure that the interaction between two or more different service centers can be done more simply and easily even though it is likely to involve a wide range of communication technologies and different cloud computing management. This is because the service oriented infrastructure acts as a middle man that translates and processes interactions and protocols of different cloud computing infrastructures without the modification of the complex to ensure horizontal scalability can be run easily and smoothly.     Measuring Impact of Air and Agricultural Soil Pollution on Social Development in Saudi Arabia

    This research aimed to measure the impact of air and agricultural soil pollution on social development in Saudi Arabia from the period 1995–2019 by using social development indicators, concentrating on the percentages of expenditure on education and health, and the Human Development Index. In addition, this study uses multiple regressions in estimating the model to study the impact of air pollution and agricultural soil on social development. Results of the study showed that a 10% change in the number of chemical fertilizers and pesticides used in Saudi agriculture leads to a change in the total number of inpatients by 0.7% and 0.5%, respectively. It was also found that an increased percentage of health expenditure to total government spending by 10% leads to a decrease in the total number of patients in the hospital by 1.8%. An increase in air pollution, expressed as a 10% increase in CO2 emissions, increases the total number of hospitalized patients by 11.1%.  The increasing total number of patients by 10% leads to a decrease in the total productivity of the worker, as an indicator of 1.8%. Furthermore, a change of 10% in the ratio of education expenditure to total government expenditure leads to a change in the same direction of the Human Development Index by 9.6%. In light of these results, it can be recommended that the country need to reduce air pollution by expanding the use of natural gas in the industrial and transportation sectors, in addition to reducing the use of nitrogenous fertilizers and pesticides in Saudi agriculture through the expansion of clean farming and good agricultural practices

    Rest-Frame Optical Spectra of Three Strongly Lensed Galaxies at z~2

    We present Keck II NIRSPEC rest-frame optical spectra for three recently discovered lensed galaxies: the Cosmic Horseshoe (z = 2.38), the Clone (z = 2.00), and SDSS J090122.37+181432.3 (z = 2.26). The boost in signal-to-noise ratio (S/N) from gravitational lensing provides an unusually detailed view of the physical conditions in these objects. A full complement of high S/N rest-frame optical emission lines is measured, spanning from rest-frame 3600 to 6800AA, including robust detections of fainter lines such as H-gamma, [SII]6717,6732, and in one instance [NeII]3869. SDSS J090122.37+181432.3 shows evidence for AGN activity, and therefore we focus our analysis on star-forming regions in the Cosmic Horseshoe and the Clone. For these two objects, we estimate a wide range of physical properties, including star-formation rate (SFR), metallicity, dynamical mass, and dust extinction. In all respects, the lensed objects appear fairly typical of UV-selected star-forming galaxies at z~2. The Clone occupies a position on the emission-line diagnostic diagram of [OIII]/H-beta vs. [NII]/H-alpha that is offset from the locations of z~0 galaxies. Our new NIRSPEC measurements may provide quantitative insights into why high-redshift objects display such properties. From the [SII] line ratio, high electron densities (~1000 cm^(-3)) are inferred compared to local galaxies, and [OIII]/[OII] line ratios indicate higher ionization parameters compared to the local population. Building on previous similar results at z~2, these measurements provide further evidence (at high S/N) that star-forming regions are significantly different in high-redshift galaxies, compared to their local counterparts (abridged).Comment: 16 pages, 8 figures.     Isolation, characterisation and in vitro evaluation of bacteriocins-producing lactiv acid bacteria from fermented products of Northern Borneo for their beneficial roles in food industry

    In this study, lactic acid bacteria (LAB) isolated from traditional fermented foods namely coco bean, fermented cabbage, salted vegetable, tempeh, tempoyak, tapai ubi and tapai nasi were screened for production of bacteriocin. Characterisation and in vitro evaluation of them were carried out to assess their potential use in food industry. Towards these objectives, the inhibitory spectra of the isolates against Listeria monocytogenes ATCC13932, resistance to phenol, amylolytic and proteolytic activities, ability to produce acid and coagulate milk, antibiotic susceptibility and tolerance in the presence of various concentration of NaCl and at different temperatures were evaluated. Two out of 15 LAB strains were able to inhibit the growth of food-borne pathogen, L. monocytogenes ATCC 13932 and produce bacteriocin-like inhibitory substances. The strains were identified as Pediococcus acidilactici TN1 (from tapai nasi) and Lactobacillus farciminis TY1 (from tempoyak). Biochemical and physiological tests demonstrated that, both strains were able to grow at wide range of NaCl concentrations (0.5 - 5.0 %, w/v) and temperatures (28 - 70 ˚C), and capable to degrade protein. They lowered the pH level and coagulate milk after 24 h of incubation. Both strains showed intrinsic mechanisms of antibiotic resistance towards streptomycin, norfloxacin, erythromycin, amikacin and nalidixic acid. They also were able to grow in 0.3% (w/v) of bile salts and tolerate up to 0.5% (w/v) phenol. The findings from this study revealed the presence of LAB strains in fermented foods of Northern Borneo which have an antimicrobial activity towards the food-borne pathogen. Even though this study had generated extensive information to validate Pediococcus acidilactici TN1 and Lactobacillus farciminis TY1 as potential probiotic strains for application in the food industry, the study is by no means comprehensive nor complete. More laboratory, particularly in vivo studies, are needed before this product could be accepted by the food industry and most importantly to explore its novel health promoting functions as well as its colonization behaviour in the gut

Bisulfite sequencing studies have identified 5-methylcytosine (5 mC) DNA methylation as one of the epigenetic changes that may be involved in this process. However, analysis of samples by bisulfite sequencing is a time-consuming procedure.     Assessment of Protective Clothing Used by Chemical Industry Workers in Pakistan

    Protective clothing serves as a barrier against many hazards faced by workers in the industry. This study aimed to investigate the performance of locally manufactured clothing used by workers in the chemical industries in Pakistan. The construction parameters were determined using international test procedures for all samples. Then, these were assessed for their chemical resistance behavior after various laundering intervals, following the ISO 6530:2005 test method. After the investigation, it was observed that the collected samples failed to meet the minimum criteria for penetration and repellency through their structure. The samples were unable to repel a minimum of 95% liquid chemical and penetrated it more than 5%, even at zero wash. These conditions worsened with each washing interval. Clothing materials should always be checked for their performance before use to protect workers at workplace
