Sex-specific differences in the impact of heavier body armour worn by law enforcement officers completing occupational tasks: a pilot study
Aim: to assess sex-specific impacts of heavier body armour in law enforcement officers completing occupational tasks.Design: A randomized counter-balanced study.Method: Ten qualified police officers of which six were female (mean height = 167.97 ± 3.67 cm, mean mass= 65.30 ± 10.57 kg) and four were male (mean height = 82.15 ± 6.98 cm, mean weight = 85.55 ± 9.96 kg) completed a functional movement screen for mobility and three occupational tasks wearing a law enforcement (2.1 kg) or military (6.4 kg) body armour system. Following paired samples t-tests, effect sizes(d) were calculated for the between-body armour type comparisons. Bond University Human Research Ethics Committee provided ethics approval (RO15803).Results: When military body armour was worn, female officers experienced a greater impact on their car exit and victim drag (d = 0.37, 0.02 respectively) when compared to males (d = 0.12, -0.41 respectively).Alternatively, male officers experienced a greater impact on their mobility and agility (d = -1.29, 0.57 respectively) when compared to females (d = -0.98, 0.31 respectively).Conclusion: Wearing heavier body armour had a greater effect on female officers in the car exit and victim drag measures and on male officers in the functional movement screen and agility measures. The impacts of wearing heavier body armour should not be considered the same between the sexes.Key Practice Points:• Heavy body armour systems may impede the sexes differently warranting consideration when rehabilitating and reconditioning police officers to return-to-work following injury

Aim: to assess sex-specific differences in wearability and comfort when wearing body armour.Design: A randomized counter-balanced study.Method: Ten participants (females n = 6, mean height = 167.97 ± 3.67 cm, mean mass = 65.30 ± 10.57 kg: males n = 4, mean height = 82.15 ± 6.98 cm, mean weight = 85.55 ± 9.96 kg) were included following eligibility criteria and assessed against occupational tasks for which they gave subjective feedback when wearing a law enforcement (2.1 kg) and military (6.4 kg) body armour system. Subjective feedback was provided on mannequin sketches and compared between sexes and body armour types. Bond University Human Research Ethics Committee provided ethics approval (RO15803).Results: Greater negative feedback was received, subjectively, from both sexes regarding the military body armour. Female participants recorded areas of most discomfort to include the neck, shoulder, chest, and hip, whilst males recorded areas to be the neck, shoulder, and abdomen. Females reported greater subjective concerns than males regarding body armour fit.Conclusion: With levels of discomfort associated with injury in police officers wearing body armour, the comfort and fit of body armour and differences between sexes must be considered. These differences require consideration when returning injured officers back to work, especially following brachial plexus palsy and meralgia paresthetica injuries.</div
Controlling magnetic anisotropy in La<sub>0.7</sub>Sr<sub>0.3</sub>MnO<sub>3</sub> nanostructures
We have developed a chlorine based dry etching process for nanopatterning the ferromagnetic oxide La<sub>0.7</sub>Sr<sub>0.3</sub>MnO<sub>3</sub> (LSMO). Large arrays of millions of identical structures have been fabricated from thin LSMO films by electron-beam lithography and reactive ion etching. SQUID magnetometry demonstrates that patterned nanostructures with lateral dimensions down to 100 nm retain their full magnetization and the Curie temperature of the bulk layer. In addition, their shape anisotropy is sufficient to overcome the crystalline anisotropy of the bulk. High resolution scanning transmission electron microscopy shows that crystallinity is preserved even at the edges of the nanostructures
Semantic Approach in Image Change Detection
International audienceChange detection is a main issue in various domains, and especially for remote sensing purposes. Indeed, plethora of geospatial images are available and can be used to update geographical databases. In this paper, we propose a classification-based method to detect changes between a database and a more recent image. It is based both on an efficient training point selection and a hierarchical decision process. This allows to take into account the intrinsic heterogeneity of the objects and themes composing a database while limiting false detection rates. The reliability of the designed framework method is first assessed on simulated data, and then successfully applied on very high resolution satellite images and two land-cover databases
Primary Proton Spectrum of Cosmic Rays measured with Single Hadrons
The flux of cosmic-ray induced single hadrons near sea level has been
measured with the large hadron calorimeter of the KASCADE experiment. The
measurement corroborates former results obtained with detectors of smaller size
if the enlarged veto of the 304 m^2 calorimeter surface is encounted for. The
program CORSIKA/QGSJET is used to compute the cosmic-ray flux above the
atmosphere. Between E_0=300 GeV and 1 PeV the primary proton spectrum can be
described with a power law parametrized as
dJ/dE_0=(0.15+-0.03)*E_0^{-2.78+-0.03} m^-2 s^-1 sr^-1 TeV^-1. In the TeV
region the proton flux compares well with the results from recent measurements

Infrared behavior of the gluon propagator in lattice Landau gauge: the three-dimensional case
We evaluate numerically the three-momentum-space gluon propagator in the
lattice Landau gauge, for three-dimensional pure-SU(2) lattice gauge theory
with periodic boundary conditions. Simulations are done for nine different
values of the coupling , from (strong coupling) to (in the scaling region), and for lattice sizes up to . In the
limit of large lattice volume we observe, in all cases, a gluon propagator
decreasing for momenta smaller than a constant value . From our data
we estimate MeV. The result of a gluon propagator
decreasing in the infrared limit has a straightforward interpretation as
resulting from the proximity of the so-called first Gribov horizon in the

Culture, entrepreneurship and uneven development: a spatial analysis
Interest in the proposed connection between culture and entrepreneurship has grown significantly in recent years. However, less attention has been given to the nature of the overall impact of this proposed association on development outcomes, particularly at a local level. In response, this paper analyses the relationship between the nature of the culture, entrepreneurship and development experienced across localities, proposing that the link between culture and development is mediated by entrepreneurship. It focuses upon the concept of community culture, as well as embracing a notion of development incorporating both economic and social well-being outcomes. Drawing upon a multivariate spatial analysis of data from localities in Great Britain, the findings indicate that differences in rates of entrepreneurship are strongly influenced by the community culture present in these localities. Furthermore, a bidirectional relationship is found to exist between entrepreneurship and economic and social development outcomes. It is concluded that the embeddedness of local community culture presents a significant challenge for those places seeking to promote entrepreneurially-driven development
Swab Materials and Bacillus anthracis Spore Recovery from Nonporous Surfaces
Four swab materials were evaluated for their efficiency in recovery of Bacillus anthracis spores from steel coupons. Cotton, macrofoam, polyester, and rayon swabs were used to sample coupons inoculated with a spore suspension of known concentration. Three methods of processing for the removal of spores from the swabs (vortexing, sonication, or minimal agitation) and two swab preparations (premoistened and dry) were evaluated. Results indicated that premoistened swabs were more efficient at recovering spores than dry swabs (14.3% vs. 4.4%). Vortexing swabs for 2 min during processing resulted in superior extraction of spores when compared to sonicating them for 12 min or subjecting them to minimal agitation. Premoistened macrofoam and cotton swabs that were vortexed during processing recovered the greatest proportions of spores with a mean recovery of 43.6% (standard deviation [SD] 11.1%) and 41.7% (SD 14.6%), respectively. Premoistened and vortexed polyester and rayon swabs were less efficient, at 9.9% (SD 3.8%) and 11.5% (SD 7.9%), respectively
Cysteine aminoethylation enables the site-specific glycosylation analysis of recombinant human erythropoietin using trypsin
Recombinant human erythropoietin (rhEPO) is an important biopharmaceutical for which glycosylation is a critical quality attribute. Therefore, robust analytical methods are needed for the in-depth characterization of rhEPO glycosylation. Currently, the protease GluC is widely established for the site-specific glycosylation analysis of rhEPO. However, this enzyme shows disadvantages, such as its specificity and the characteristics of the resulting (glyco)peptides. The use of trypsin, the gold standard protease in proteomics, as the sole protease for rhEPO is compromised, as no natural tryptic cleavage site is located between the glycosylation sites Asn24 and Asn38. Here, cysteine aminoethylation using 2-bromoethylamine was applied as an alternative alkylation strategy to introduce artificial tryptic cleavage sites at Cys29 and Cys33 in rhEPO. The (glyco)peptides resulting from a subsequent digestion using trypsin were analyzed by reverse-phase liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry. The new trypsin-based workflow was easily implemented by adapting the alkylation step in a conventional workflow and was directly compared to an established approach using GluC. The new method shows an improved specificity, a significantly reduced chromatogram complexity, allows for shorter analysis times, and simplifies data evaluation. Furthermore, the method allows for the monitoring of additional attributes, such as oxidation and deamidation at specific sites in parallel to the site-specific glycosylation analysis of rhEPO.Proteomic
