This study responds to the need for measures to mitigate the effects of national actions to slow the spread of COVID-19. National responses are dynamic processes and thus an elusive, albeit important, object of study. The governments of most CIS countries acted promptly and decisively in countering the pandemic. The comprehensive measures have had a serious impact on citizens’ mobility and employment situation. Among the affected are millions of migrants working in the CIS. This article offers a comparative analysis, followed by synthesis, of the negative effects of the COVID-19 pandemic as seen through the prism of employment and the situation of migrant workers in the CIS. Another focus is the restriction and support measures and how they have affected migrants. A range of qualitative and quantitative data was collated on the situation of migrant workers during COVID-19 restriction in the Russian Federation and across the CIS. The findings suggest that the lack of international coordination in tackling COVID-19 has complicated the situation of migrant workers, who suffer from the closure of borders and the absence of adequate social support. The article explores problems faced by migrant workers in the current crisis and proposes measures to alleviate them

Temporal decorrelation of collective oscillations in neural networks with local inhibition and long-range excitation

We consider two neuronal networks coupled by long-range excitatory interactions. Oscillations in the gamma frequency band are generated within each network by local inhibition. When long-range excitation is weak, these oscillations phase-lock with a phase-shift dependent on the strength of local inhibition. Increasing the strength of long-range excitation induces a transition to chaos via period-doubling or quasi-periodic scenarios. In the chaotic regime oscillatory activity undergoes fast temporal decorrelation. The generality of these dynamical properties is assessed in firing-rate models as well as in large networks of conductance-based neurons.Comment: 4 pages, 5 figures. accepted for publication in Physical Review Letter

    Get PDF
Background. An urgent problem is the development and introduction of cultivars for universal use that can meet the demand of animal husbandry for various types of feed and that of food industry for raw materials. Of great interest in this regard is ‘Tobolyak’, a new spring oat cultivar characterized by a high yield of grain and green biomass.Materials and methods. The cultivar was developed at the Research Institute of Agriculture for the Northern TransUrals, a branch of the Tyumen Scientific Centre, Siberian Branch of the RAS, using hybridization techniques with subsequent selection. The cultivars used as source material for hybridization were ‘Tayoznik’ (Narym Agricultural Station, Tomsk Province) and ‘Orion’ (Siberian Research Institute of Agriculture, Omsk Province).Results. It is a mid-ripening cultivar, with the growing season of 71 to 83 days from sprouting to wax ripeness; its plants are medium-tall (89.6 to 120.2 cm), and resistant to lodging. The average grain yield for the years of study (2014–2019) under the environmental conditions of the northern forest-steppe (Tyumen Province) was 5.88 t/ha (+0.41 t/ha to the reference). The maximum grain yield (7.97 t/ha) was obtained in 2019 at the Lower Tavda Variety Testing Plot, Tyumen Province. The cultivar formed a grain with the test weight of 459.5–527.0 g/l and a low hull content of 22.1–25.1%. The yield of green biomass varied from 31.4 to 47.3 t/ha, depending on the growing conditions, and averaged 37.7 t/ha in 2014–2019 (+7.3 t/ha to the reference). Dry matter harvest averaged 11.76 t/ha (+1.54 t/ha to the reference), ranging from 8.62 to 14.56 t/ha.Conclusion. The new spring oat cultivar ‘Tobolyak’ for universal use has been listed the State Register for Selection Achievements since 2020 and recommended for cultivation in regions 10, 11 and 12 of the Russian Federation

    Collective Modes of Tri-Nuclear Molecules

    Get PDF
A geometrical model for tri-nuclear molecules is presented. An analytical solution is obtained provided the nuclei, which are taken to be prolately deformed, are connected in line to each other. Furthermore, the tri-nuclear molecule is composed of two heavy and one light cluster, the later sandwiched between the two heavy clusters. A basis is constructed in which Hamiltonians of more general configurations can be diagonalized. In the calculation of the interaction between the clusters higher multipole deformations are taken into account, including the hexadecupole one. A repulsive nuclear core is introduced in the potential in order to insure a quasi-stable configuration of the system. The model is applied to three nuclear molecules, namely 96^{96}Sr + 10^{10}Be + 146^{146}Ba, 108^{108}Mo + 10^{10}Be + 134^{134}Te and 112^{112}Ru + 10^{10}Be + 130^{130}Sn.Comment: 24 pages, 9 figure

Impact of cognitive stimulation on ripples within human epileptic and non-epileptic hippocampus

    Get PDF
Background: Until now there has been no way of distinguishing between physiological and epileptic hippocampal ripples in intracranial recordings. In the present study we addressed this by investigating the effect of cognitive stimulation on interictal high frequency oscillations in the ripple range (80-250 Hz) within epileptic (EH) and non-epileptic hippocampus (NH). Methods: We analyzed depth EEG recordings in 10 patients with intractable epilepsy, in whom hippocampal activity was recorded initially during quiet wakefulness and subsequently during a simple cognitive task. Using automated detection of ripples based on amplitude of the power envelope, we analyzed ripple rate (RR) in the cognitive and resting period, within EH and NH. Results: Compared to quiet wakefulness we observed a significant reduction of RR during cognitive stimulation in EH, while it remained statistically marginal in NH. Further, we investigated the direct impact of cognitive stimuli on ripples (i.e. immediately post-stimulus), which showed a transient statistically significant suppression of ripples in the first second after stimuli onset in NH only. Conclusion: Our results point to a differential reactivity of ripples within EH and NH to cognitive stimulation

INTERACTIONS BETWEEN ANXIETY LEVELS AND LIFE HABITS CHANGES IN GENERAL POPULATION DURING THE PANDEMIC LOCKDOWN: DECREASED PHYSICAL ACTIVITY, FALLING ASLEEP LATE AND INTERNET BROWSING ABOUT COVID-19 ARE RISK FACTORS FOR ANXIETY, WHEREAS SOCIAL MEDIA USE IS NOT

Background. The COVID-19 pandemic has substantially contributed to increased anxiety rates among the general population worldwide. Pandemic-related health anxiety and worries about getting COVID-19 can lead to generalized anxiety and anxiety somatization, which, together with insalubrious daily life habits, are risk factors of worsening somatic health in people with SARS-Cov-2 infection. Subjects and methods: The current study is a part of the COMET-G project (40 countries, n=55589; approved by the Ethics Committee of the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki), which represents an intermediate analysis of data collected anonymously via online links from a national sample of the Russian general population (n=9936, 31.09±12.16 y.o., 58.7% females) to estimate anxiety using STAI-S and self-reported changes in anxiety and life habits (physical activity, nutrition and weight, internet use, sleep) during the lockdown. All statistical calculations (descriptive statistics, between group comparisons using chi-square test, MANOVA, ANOVA, significant at p<0.05) were performed with IBM SPSS 27. Results: Overall STAI-S scores were 29+- 5.4, a subjective feeling of anxiety increase was reported in 40.3% of respondents (43.9% significantly > in females), worsening to clinical anxiety in 2.1% (2.4% > in females). 54.2% of respondents reported decreased physical activity, 33.1% gained weight, 72% used internet more often, 52.6% experienced worries related to the information about COVID-19 (56.8% > in females). 88% experienced worsened sleep quality, 69.2% stayed up until late, 23.2% took sleeping pills, and 31% had nightmares in which they felt trapped. To ANOVA, such life habits as reduced physical activity during the lockdown, increased time spent online, internet browsing about COVID-19, tendency to stay up late, use of sleeping pills and disturbing dreams with scenario of being trapped were significantly related to worsening of clinical anxiety. However, eating behaviour, weight changes, and social media use did not contribute to the clinical anxiety increase. Conclusions: Factors of decreased physical activity and sleep disturbances related to the lockdown, as well as excessive internet browsing for information about COVID-19, emerged as risk factors for increased anxiety, more notably in women than in men. Preventive measures should be targeted against relevant factors imparting anxiety in the vulnerable population
