A study of forced flow separation in rocket nozzle
The characteristics of flow profile in a rocket nozzle during the start transient were investigated as well as possibilities of reducing the side-load thrust by sticking trip wires in the nozzle. To simplify the geometry of flow configuration around the trip wire, it was assumed that the flow is passing through square steps instead of round wires. Since a purely analytic solution is not available, a series of semiempirical solutions was proposed
A Deformation of Twistor Space and a Chiral Mass Term in N=4 Super Yang-Mills Theory
Super twistor space admits a certain (super) complex structure deformation
that preserves the Poincare subgroup of the symmetry group PSL(4|4) and depends
on 10 parameters. In a previous paper [hep-th/0502076], it was proposed that in
twistor string theory this deformation corresponds to augmenting N=4 super
Yang-Mills theory by a mass term for the left-chirality spinors. In this paper
we analyze this proposal in more detail. We calculate 4-particle scattering
amplitudes of fermions, gluons and scalars and show that they are supported on
holomorphic curves in the deformed twistor space.Comment: 52 pages, 15 figure
Cosmological Evolution of a Brane Universe in a Type 0 String Background
We study the cosmological evolution of a D3-brane Universe in a type 0 string
background. We follow the brane-universe along the radial coordinate of the
background and we calculate the energy density which is induced on the brane
because of its motion in the bulk. We find that for some typical values of the
parameters and for a particular range of values of the scale factor of the
brane-universe, the effective energy density is dominated by a term
proportional to indicating a slow varying inflationary
phase. For larger values of the scale factor the effective energy density takes
a constant value and the brane-universe enters its usual inflationary period.Comment: 25 pages,1 figure,LaTex file, final version to appear in Phys. Rev.
Noncommutative Dipole Field Theories And Unitarity
We extend the argument of Gomis and Mehen for violation of unitarity in field
theories with space-time noncommutativity to dipole field theories. In dipole
field theories with a timelike dipole vector, we present 1-loop amplitudes that
violate the optical theorem. A quantum mechanical system with nonlocal
potential of finite extent in time also shows violation of unitarity.Comment: typos corrected, more details added in Sec 5, version to appear in

Active Tension Network model suggests an exotic mechanical state realized in epithelial tissues.
Mechanical interactions play a crucial role in epithelial morphogenesis, yet understanding the complex mechanisms through which stress and deformation affect cell behavior remains an open problem. Here we formulate and analyze the Active Tension Network (ATN) model, which assumes that the mechanical balance of cells within a tissue is dominated by cortical tension and introduces tension-dependent active remodeling of the cortex. We find that ATNs exhibit unusual mechanical properties. Specifically, an ATN behaves as a fluid at short times, but at long times supports external tension like a solid. Furthermore, an ATN has an extensively degenerate equilibrium mechanical state associated with a discrete conformal - "isogonal" - deformation of cells. The ATN model predicts a constraint on equilibrium cell geometries, which we demonstrate to approximately hold in certain epithelial tissues. We further show that isogonal modes are observed in the fruit y embryo, accounting for the striking variability of apical areas of ventral cells and helping understand the early phase of gastrulation. Living matter realizes new and exotic mechanical states, the study of which helps to understand biological phenomena
Hydrodynamics of a 5D Einstein-dilaton black hole solution and the corresponding BPS state
We apply the potential reconstruction approach to generate a series of
asymptotically AdS (aAdS) black hole solutions, with a self-interacting bulk
scalar field. Based on the method, we reproduce the pure AdS solution as a
consistency check and we also generate a simple analytic 5D black hole
solution. We then study various aspects of this solution, such as temperature,
entropy density and conserved charges. Furthermore, we study the hydrodynamics
of this black hole solution in the framework of fluid/gravity duality, e.g. the
ratio of the shear viscosity to the entropy density. In a degenerate case of
the 5D black hole solution, we find that the c function decreases monotonically
from UV to IR as expected. Finally, we investigate the stability of the
degenerate solution by studying the bosonic functional energy of the gravity
and the Witten-Nester energy . We confirm that the degenerate solution
is a BPS domain wall solution. The corresponding superpotential and the
solution of the killing spinor equation are found explicitly.Comment: V2: 23 pages, no figure, minor changes, typos corrected, new

Ultraviolet polarisation sensitivity in the stomatopod crustacean Odontodactylus scyllarus
The ommatidia of crustacean eyes typically contain two classes of photoreceptors with orthogonally oriented microvilli. These receptors provide the basis for two-channel polarisation vision in the blueâgreen spectrum. The retinae of gonodactyloid stomatopod crustaceans possess a great variety of structural specialisations for elaborate polarisation vision. One type of specialisation is found in the small, distally placed R8 cells within the two most ventral rows of the mid-band. These ultraviolet-sensitive photoreceptors produce parallel microvilli, a feature suggestive for polarisation-sensitive photoreceptors. Here, we show by means of intracellular recordings combined with dye-injections that in the gonodactyloid species Odontodactylus scyllarus, the R8 cells of mid-band rows 5 and 6 are sensitive to linear polarised ultraviolet light. We show that mid-band row 5 R8 cells respond maximally to light with an e-vector oriented parallel to the mid-band, whereas mid-band row 6 R8 cells respond maximally to light with an e-vector oriented perpendicular to the mid-band. This orthogonal arrangement of ultraviolet-sensitive receptor cells could support ultraviolet polarisation vision. R8 cells of rows 5 and 6 are known to act as quarter-wave retarders around 500Â nm and thus are the first photoreceptor type described with a potential dual role in polarisation vision
Twistor Strings with Flavour
We explore the tree-level description of a class of N=2 UV-finite SYM
theories with fundamental flavour within a topological B-model twistor string
framework. In particular, we identify the twistor dual of the Sp(N) gauge
theory with one antisymmetric and four fundamental hypermultiplets, as well as
that of the SU(N) theory with 2N hypermultiplets. This is achieved by suitably
orientifolding/orbifolding the original N=4 setup of Witten and adding a
certain number of new topological 'flavour'-branes at the orientifold/orbifold
fixed planes to provide the fundamental matter. We further comment on the
appearance of these objects in the B-model on CP(3|4). An interesting aspect of
our construction is that, unlike the IIB description of these theories in terms
of D3 and D7-branes, on the twistor side part of the global flavour symmetry is
realised geometrically. We provide evidence for this correspondence by
calculating and matching amplitudes on both sides.Comment: 38+12 pages; uses axodraw.sty. v2: References added, minor

N=8 Superspace Constraints for Three-dimensional Gauge Theories
We present a systematic analysis of the N=8 superspace constraints in three
space-time dimensions. The general coupling between vector and scalar
supermultiplets is encoded in an SO(8) tensor W_{AB} which is a function of the
matter fields and subject to a set of algebraic and super-differential
relations. We show how the conformal BLG model as well as three-dimensional
super Yang-Mills theory provide solutions to these constraints and can both be
formulated in this universal framework.Comment: 34 + 10 pages; added references, minor correction
