    Formation of molecular oxygen in ultracold O + OH reaction

    We discuss the formation of molecular oxygen in ultracold collisions between hydroxyl radicals and atomic oxygen. A time-independent quantum formalism based on hyperspherical coordinates is employed for the calculations. Elastic, inelastic and reactive cross sections as well as the vibrational and rotational populations of the product O2 molecules are reported. A J-shifting approximation is used to compute the rate coefficients. At temperatures T = 10 - 100 mK for which the OH molecules have been cooled and trapped experimentally, the elastic and reactive rate coefficients are of comparable magnitude, while at colder temperatures, T < 1 mK, the formation of molecular oxygen becomes the dominant pathway. The validity of a classical capture model to describe cold collisions of OH and O is also discussed. While very good agreement is found between classical and quantum results at T=0.3 K, at higher temperatures, the quantum calculations predict a larger rate coefficient than the classical model, in agreement with experimental data for the O + OH reaction. The zero-temperature limiting value of the rate coefficient is predicted to be about 6.10^{-12} cm^3 molecule^{-1} s^{-1}, a value comparable to that of barrierless alkali-metal atom - dimer systems and about a factor of five larger than that of the tunneling dominated F + H2 reaction.Comment: 9 pages, 8 figure

    Temporal Variability of Urinary Phthalate Metabolite Levels in Men of Reproductive Age

    Phthalates are a family of multifunctional chemicals widely used in personal care and other consumer products. The ubiquitous use of phthalates results in human exposure through multiple sources and routes, including dietary ingestion, dermal absorption, inhalation, and parenteral exposure from medical devices containing phthalates. We explored the temporal variability over 3 months in urinary phthalate metabolite levels among 11 men who collected up to nine urine samples each during this time period. Eight phthalate metabolites were measured by solid-phase extraction–high-performance liquid chromatography–tandem mass spectrometry. Statistical analyses were performed to determine the between- and within-subject variance apportionment, and the sensitivity and specificity of a single urine sample to classify a subject’s 3-month average exposure. Five of the eight phthalates were frequently detected. Monoethyl phthalate (MEP) was detected in 100% of samples; monobutyl phthalate, monobenzyl phthalate, mono-2-ethylhexyl phthalate (MEHP), and monomethyl phthalate were detected in > 90% of samples. Although we found both substantial day-to-day and month-to-month variability in each individual’s urinary phthalate metabolite levels, a single urine sample was moderately predictive of each subject’s exposure over 3 months. The sensitivities ranged from 0.56 to 0.74. Both the degree of between- and within-subject variance and the predictive ability of a single urine sample differed among phthalate metabolites. In particular, a single urine sample was most predictive for MEP and least predictive for MEHP. These results suggest that the most efficient exposure assessment strategy for a particular study may depend on the phthalates of interest

    On the expressive power of read-once determinants

    We introduce and study the notion of read-kk projections of the determinant: a polynomial fF[x1,,xn]f \in \mathbb{F}[x_1, \ldots, x_n] is called a {\it read-kk projection of determinant} if f=det(M)f=det(M), where entries of matrix MM are either field elements or variables such that each variable appears at most kk times in MM. A monomial set SS is said to be expressible as read-kk projection of determinant if there is a read-kk projection of determinant ff such that the monomial set of ff is equal to SS. We obtain basic results relating read-kk determinantal projections to the well-studied notion of determinantal complexity. We show that for sufficiently large nn, the n×nn \times n permanent polynomial PermnPerm_n and the elementary symmetric polynomials of degree dd on nn variables SndS_n^d for 2dn22 \leq d \leq n-2 are not expressible as read-once projection of determinant, whereas mon(Permn)mon(Perm_n) and mon(Snd)mon(S_n^d) are expressible as read-once projections of determinant. We also give examples of monomial sets which are not expressible as read-once projections of determinant

    Solving the Bethe-Salpeter equation for bound states of scalar theories in Minkowski space

    We apply the perturbation theory integral representation (PTIR) to solve for the bound state Bethe-Salpeter (BS) vertex for an arbitrary scattering kernel, without the need for any Wick rotation. The results derived are applicable to any scalar field theory (without derivative coupling). It is shown that solving directly for the BS vertex, rather than the BS amplitude, has several major advantages, notably its relative simplicity and superior numerical accuracy. In order to illustrate the generality of the approach we obtain numerical solutions using this formalism for a number of scattering kernels, including cases where the Wick rotation is not possible.Comment: 28 pages of LaTeX, uses psfig.sty with 5 figures.     Pseudomoduli Dark Matter

    We point out that pseudomoduli -- tree-level flat directions that often accompany dynamical supersymmetry breaking -- can be natural candidates for TeV-scale dark matter in models of gauge mediation. The idea is general and can be applied to different dark matter scenarios, including (but not limited to) those of potential relevance to recent cosmic ray anomalies. We describe the requirements for a viable model of pseudomoduli dark matter, and we analyze two example models to illustrate the general mechanism -- one where the pseudomoduli carry Higgsino-like quantum numbers, and another where they are SM singlets but are charged under a hidden-sector U(1)U(1)' gauge group.Comment: 20 pages, refs adde

    This local study of the impact of political violence on a Maya Indian village is based on twenty months intensive fieldwork. It examines the processes of fragmentation and realignment in a community undergoing rapid and violent change. The thesis relates local, social, cultural and psychological phenomena to the impact of the contemporary "dirty war" on widows' lives. Victims are mostly civilians caught between guerrilla and government forces. Violence is treated not as a socio-culturally fragmented phenomenon occurring "outside" everyday life, but as part and parcel of victims' lives. The thesis combines a narrative, life-history approach with anthropological analysis, emphasizing the ways locals talk about and explain the violence. The cultural articulation of conflict and the expression of anxiety in cultural performance are examined. I explore the mechanisms and effects of continuing terror and repression, silenced and disguised at the local level. The survival strategies of widows and their attempts to reconstruct their lives on a physical level and in terms of meaning are examined. I privilege the unofficial oral testimony of Indian women. Memories are presented in narratives which not only reflect the narrator's perception but actively reconstitute their reality. "Re-membering" is not simply the automatic engagement of the past within the present but a process of self empowerment. Widows discover new possibilities in terms of potential for action and their position in society, though attempts at resistant actions are limited by the risks of further danger

    THE SPECTRAL CONTRIBUTION OF CAROTENOIDS TO LIGHT ABSORPTION AND REFLECTANCE IN GREEN LEAVES

    Absorbance and reflectance spectra in the visible and near infrared range of the spectrum, acquired for maple (Acer platanoides L.) leaves were studied. Standard deviation of absorbance spectra showed that in yellow to green leaves, with chlorophyll content at least up to 30 nmol/cm2, there is a spectral feature at 520 nm attributable to carotenoids. Reflectance around 520 nm also correlates closely with carotenoids content in yellow to green leaves. Thus, this spectral feature at 520 nm could be used as a measure of carotenoids content in green leaves and plants

    Cytology and mating systems in the climbing cacti Hylocereus and Selenicereus

    Chromosome numbers and meiotic behavior are reported for the climbing cacti species Hylocereus undatus, Hylocereus polyrhizus, and Selenicereus megalanthus. The Hylocereus spp. are diploid (2n 5 22), while S. megalanthus is a tetraploid (2n 5 44). Irregular chromosome disjunction at anaphase I in pollen mother cells of S. megalanthus is probably the major cause of its reduced pollen viability and may contribute to low seed set, low number of viable seeds and, consequently, low fruit mass. A pollination study confirmed self-incompatibility in H. polyrhizus and a weakened incompatibility reaction in H. undatus and S. megalanthus. Major crossability barriers do not exist between the Hylocereus spp. investigated. Reciprocal intergeneric crosses were successful between Hylocereus spp. and S. megalanthus, suggesting that an Hylocereus sp. Might be one of the diploid progenitors of the tetraploid S. megalanthus. The implications of the results on cacti nomenclature and systematics are briefly discussed

    Inhomogeneous magnetism in single crystalline Sr3_3CuIrO6+δ_{6+\delta}: Implications to phase-separation concepts

    The single crystalline form of an insulator, Sr3_3CuIrO6+δ_{6+\delta}, is shown to exhibit unexpectedly more than one magnetic transition (at 5 and 19 K) with spin-glass-like magnetic susceptibility behaviour. On the basis of this finding, viz., inhomogeneous magnetism in a chemically homogeneous material, we propose that the idea of "phase- separation" described for manganites [1] is more widespread in different ways. The observed experimental features enable us to make a comparison with the predictions of a recent toy model [2] on {\it magnetic} phase separation in an insulating environment.Comment: 4 pages, 4 figure
