    Inference of moisture content in unsaturated media using ultrasonics

    A study is reported which investigates the use of commercial ultrasonics to determine moisture content in geologic and similar materials. Transmission experiments were performed on two of the limiting extremes found in these types of media. In one, tests were made on moistened sand. In the other, fractured media were experimentally simulated with a stack of ceramic tiles with gaps filled with and without water. A simple theoretical model has been developed to estimate velocities and transmitted amplitudes through the tile system, and calculations from this model are compared to the experimental data. It appears that ultrasonics are more sensitive to moisture content in systems where the amount of granular materials is small compared to consolidated media

    Effect of the foam embellishments on the pedestrian safety of the vehicle front protection systems

    Pedestrian safety related compliance requirements are very important in case of design and development of the vehicle front protection systems. Computer aided engineering impact simulations were carried out to evaluate Head Injury Criterion (HIC) of a typical bullbar impacting it with an adult headform and correlated with experimental results. Impact simulations were carried out on the same bullbar covered with semi‐rigid polyurethane foam to study the effect of foam embellishments on the pedestrian safety. Results obtained from the impact simulations were presented in this paper

    The significant relationship between obesity and Type 2 Diabetes has been evidenced since ancient times. Ayurveda, Traditional Indian system of medicine, categorizes Prameha (diabetes) into two types i.e. Sthula prameha (diabetes in obese people) and Krisa prameha (diabetes in lean individuals). The alarming rise in prevalence of these disorders without any sign of decline in near future represents a global burden. Several prospective studies present impaired insulin release, impaired glucose tolerance, low grade inflammation and insulin resistance as the major factors for the development of type 2 diabetes. The low grade inflammation that dominates in obesity is the permanent elevation of plasma FFA and the predominant utilization of lipids by the muscle interfering with the uptake of glucose in skeletal muscle. This review article aims at understanding the potential mechanisms that lead human obesity to type 2 diabetes and therapeutic interventions for treating these disorders with a focus on the side effects of the conventional oral hypoglycemic agents and antiobesity agents. WHO and IDF moving with a goal for prevention of this global dual epidemic rather than curing by emphasizing the targets in various pathways and weight loss interventions. In this context, the review article highlights the potential targets for new therapeutic interventions and significance of weight loss for preventing and decreasing the progression of this multifactorial disorder

    Male Grooming: An Ethnographic Research on Perception and Choice of Male Cosmetics

    The purpose of this study is to explore male perceptions toward cosmetics and their product choice. Applying an ethnographic framework to this study, three males between the ages of 24-30 were interviewed through a series of 141 questions pertaining to their demographics, lifestyle, attitudes toward masculinity, skin care, grooming and cleaning behaviors. The results showed five overarching themes: (1) all of the participants had early experiences with personal care products, (2) the term masculinity was defined with terms such as calm and practical , (3) all participants looked up to their fathers as their key role models, (4) all participants valued loyal friendships, and (5) location convenience drives shopping for cosmetics - participants tend to only shop for cosmetics at a location where they are based at any given point in time, thereby implying an unwillingness to travel to a specialty store for purchasing grooming items. Managerial implications utilizing the results of this research are also discussed

    Dendronylation: Residue-specific chemoselective attachment of oligoglycerol dendrimers on proteins with noncanonical amino acids

    Polyglycerol dendrimers as an important class of polymeric materials especially attractive for covalent attachment to therapeutic proteins as a useful alternative to traditional PEGylation procedures. Herein, we combine in vivo noncanonical amino acid (ncAA) incorporation and chemoselective conjugation in vitro to produce novel hybrid protein–dendrimer conjugates with the defined architectures. We incorporated Azidohomoalanine (Aha) as methionine substitute in vivo into various protein scaffolds to allow non-invasive dendrimer conjugations (dendronylation). Our approach makes recombinant proteins accessible for the design of multivalent dendrimer conjugates since it enables the preparation of many sequences with various positions for regioselective dendronylation

    A Framework for Web Services Retrieval Using Bio Inspired Clustering

    Efficiently discovering relevant Web services with respect to a specific user query has become a growing challenge owing to the incredible growth in the field of web technologies. In previous works, different clustering models have been used to address these issues. But, most of the traditional clustering techniques are computationally intensive and fail to address all the problems involved. Also, the current standards fail to incorporate the semantic relatedness of Web services during clustering and retrieval resulting in decreased performance. In this paper, we propose a framework for web services retrieval that uses a bottom-up, decentralized and self organising approach to cluster available services. It also provides online, dynamic computation of clusters thus overcoming the drawbacks of traditional clustering methods. We also use the semantic similarity between Web services for the clustering process to enhance the precision and lower the recall

    Controlled self-assembly of stomatosomes by use of single-component fluorinated dendritic amphiphiles

    A series of novel non-ionic amphiphiles with dendritic oligoglycerol head groups of different generations ([G1]–[G3]) and lipophilic/fluorophilic tail segments, comprising single or double tail alkyl chains, C8F17-perfluoro rod segments as well as flexible spacer groups of different lengths were designed and synthesized. We expected that the differences in the size of the dendritic head groups in combination with perfluorinated segments would have an impact on the supramolecular structures formed in aqueous solution if compared with the hydrogenated analogues. Investigating the self-assembly behavior mainly by cryogenic transmission electron microscopy (cryo-TEM) and cryo-electron tomography (cryo-ET) we found as a new result the formation of perforated bilayer vesicles (stomatosomes) and bicontinuous network structures. Surprisingly, we have observed stomatosome formation by self-assembly of single component fluorinated dendritic amphiphiles. These assembly structures turned out to be extremely robust against harsh conditions, although there are strong indications that they represent non-equilibrium structures, which eventually transform into a bicontinuous cubic network structure of double diamond symmetry. In general, the molecular asymmetry of amphiphiles tuned by chemical design induced the expected trend from spherical micelles through worm-like micelles to perforated bilayers and three-dimensional network structures

    Application of bifurcation methods for the prediction of low-speed aircraft ground performance

    The design of aircraft for ground maneuvers is an essential part in satisfying the demanding requirements of the aircraft operators. Extensive analysis is done to ensure that a new civil aircraft type will adhere to these requirements, for which the nonlinear nature of the problem generally adds to the complexity of such calculations. Small perturbations in velocity, steering angle, or brake application may lead to significant differences in the final turn widths that can be achieved. Here, the U-turn maneuver is analyzed in detail, with a comparison between the two ways in which this maneuver is conducted. A comparison is also made between existing turn-width prediction methods that consist mainly of geometric methods and simulations and a proposed new method that uses dynamical systems theory. Some assumptions are made with regard to the transient behavior, for which it is shown that these assumptions are conservative when an upper bound is chosen for the transient distance. Furthermore, we demonstrate that the results from the dynamical systems analysis are sufficiently close to the results from simulations to be used as a valuable design tool. Overall, dynamical systems methods provide an order-of-magnitude increase in analysis speed and capability for the prediction of turn widths on the ground when compared with simulations.     Association of plasma neurofilament light chain with glycaemic control and insulin resistance in middle-aged adults

    Aims: This study aimed to determine the association of plasma neurofilament light (NfL), a marker of neurodegeneration, with diabetes status and glycaemic parameters in people with normal glycaemia (NG), pre-diabetes (PD) and type 2 diabetes (T2D). Methods: Clinical and descriptive data for the diagnostic groups, NG (n=30), PD (n=48) and T2D (n=29), aged between 40 and 75 years were included in this cross-sectional analysis. Plasma NfL levels were analyzed using the ultra-sensitive single-molecule array (Simoa) platform. Results: A positive correlation was evident between plasma NfL and fasting glucose (r = 0.2824; p = 0.0032). Plasma NfL levels were not correlated with fasting insulin and insulin resistance. Plasma Nfl levels were significantly different across the diabetes groups (T2D \u3e PD \u3e NG, p = 0.0046). Post-hoc analysis indicated significantly higher plasma NfL levels in the T2D [12.4 (5.21) pg/mL] group than in the PD [10.2 (4.13) pg/mL] and NG [8.37 (5.65) pg/mL] groups. The relationship between diabetes status and NfL remained significant after adjusting for age, sex, BMI, HOMA-IR and physical activity (adjusted r2 = 0.271, p = 0.035). Conclusions: These results show biomarker evidence of neurodegeneration in adults at risk or with T2D. Larger sample size and longitudinal analysis are required to better understand the application of NfL in people with risk and overt T2D
