Ferromagnetic imprinting of spin polarization in a semiconductor
We present a theory of the imprinting of the electron spin coherence and
population in an n-doped semiconductor which forms a junction with a
ferromagnet. The reflection of non-equilibrium semiconductor electrons at the
interface provides a mechanism to manipulate the spin polarization vector. In
the case of unpolarized excitation, this ballistic effect produces spontaneous
electron spin coherence and nuclear polarization in the semiconductor, as
recently observed by time-resolved Faraday rotation experiments. We investigate
the dependence of the spin reflection on the Schottky barrier height and the
doping concentration in the semiconductor and suggest control mechanisms for
possible device applications.Comment: 4 pages with 2 figure
Quasiparticle Band Structure and Density Functional Theory: Single-Particle Excitations and Band Gaps in Lattice Models
We compare the quasiparticle band structure for a model insulator obtained
from the fluctuation exchange approximation (FEA) with the eigenvalues of the
corresponding density functional theory (DFT) and local density approximation
(LDA). The discontinuity in the exchange-correlation potential for this model
is small and the FEA and DFT band structures are in good agreement. In contrast
to conventional wisdom, the LDA for this model overestimates the size of the
band gap. We argue that this is a consequence of an FEA self-energy that is
strongly frequency dependent, but essentially local.Comment: 8 pages, and 5 figure
Causal Relationship Between Oral Performance and Communication Apprehension
This study investigates the causal relationship between the form students who have passed in School-Based Oral Evaluation (SBOE) with communication apprehension. The participants are 302 of form four male and female students from the government secondary schools in Putrajaya Federal Territory, Malaysia. The purpose of this study is to determine the effectiveness of SBOE and its relationship with communication apprehension. This study is an explanatory sequential mixed method design in which quantitative and qualitative [11] data were collected in sequential, analyzed separately, and then explained. The quantitative data were collected by using FLCAS, SBOE results and the qualitative data were collected from the semi-structured interviews with the English teachers. The quantitative data were analysed by descriptive analysis (SPSS) and the qualitative data were analysed by content analysis. The results revealed that the students had scored high results in SBOE in the mid-term examination 2017. The findings from the quantitative and qualitative methods showed that students experience low level of communication apprehension. High oral performance affects communication apprehension. This study recommends a new oral-based English curriculum for the secondary schools.

Involuntary Orienting and Conflict Resolution during Auditory Attention: The Role of Ventral and Dorsal Streams
Selective attention to sound object features such as pitch and location is associated with enhanced brain activity in ventral and dorsal streams, respectively. We examined the role of these pathways in involuntary orienting and conflict resolution using fMRI. Participants were presented with two tones that may, or may not, share the same nonspatial (frequency) or spatial (location) auditory features. In separate blocks of trials, participants were asked to attend to sound frequency or sound location and ignore the change in the task-irrelevant feature. In both attend-frequency and attend-location tasks, RTs were slower when the task-irrelevant feature changed than when it stayed the same (involuntary orienting). This behavioral cost coincided with enhanced activity in the pFC and superior temporal gyrus. Conflict resolution was examined by comparing situations where the change in stimulus features was congruent (both features changed) and incongruent (only one feature changed). Participants were slower and less accurate for incongruent than congruent sound features. This congruency effect was associated with enhanced activity in the pFC and was greater in the right superior temporal gyrus and medial frontal cortex during the attend-location task than during the attend-frequency task. Together, these findings do not support a strict division of “labor” into ventral and dorsal streams but rather suggest interactions between these pathways in situations involving changes in task-irrelevant sound feature and conflict resolution. These findings also validate the Test of Attention in Listening task by revealing distinct neural correlates for involuntary orienting and conflict resolution
Indirect coupling between spins in semiconductor quantum dots
The optically induced indirect exchange interaction between spins in two
quantum dots is investigated theoretically. We present a microscopic
formulation of the interaction between the localized spin and the itinerant
carriers including the effects of correlation, using a set of canonical
transformations. Correlation effects are found to be of comparable magnitude as
the direct exchange. We give quantitative results for realistic quantum dot
geometries and find the largest couplings for one dimensional systems.Comment: 4 pages, 3 figure
Auto/cross-regulation of Hoxb3 expression in posterior hindbrain and spinal cord
The complex and dynamic pattern of Hoxb3 expression in the developing hindbrain and the associated neural crest of mouse embryos is controlled by three separate cis-regulatory elements: element I (region A), element IIIa, and the r5 enhancer (element IVa). We have examined the cis-regulatory element IIIa by transgenic and mutational analysis to determine the upstream trans-acting factors and mechanisms that are involved in controlling the expression of the mouse Hoxb3 gene in the anterior spinal cord and hindbrain up to the r5/r6 boundary, as well as the associated neural crest which migrate to the third and posterior branchial arches and to the gut. By deletion analysis, we have identified the sequence requirements within a 482-bp element III482. Two Hox binding sites are identified in element III482 and we have shown that in vitro both Hoxb3 and Hoxb4 proteins can interact with these Hox binding sites, suggesting that auto/cross-regulation is required for establishing the expression of Hoxb3 in the neural tube domain. Interestingly, we have identified a novel GCCAGGC sequence motif within element III482, which is also required to direct gene expression to a subset of the expression domains except for rhombomere 6 and the associated neural crest migrating to the third and posterior branchial arches. Element III482 can direct a higher level of reporter gene expression in r6, which led us to investigate whether kreisler is involved in regulating Hoxb3 expression in r6 through this element. However, our transgenic and mutational analysis has demonstrated that, although kreisler binding sites are present, they are not required for the establishment or maintenance of reporter gene expression in r6. Our results have provided evidence that the expression of Hoxb3 in the neural tube up to the r5/r6 boundary is auto/cross-regulated by Hox genes and expression of Hoxb3 in r6 does not require kreisler. © 2002 Elsevier Science (USA).published_or_final_versio

Numerical investigation of oil injection in a Roots blower operated as expander
The adoption of positive displacement machines as expanders in Organic Rankine Cycles (ORCs) is increasingly common, especially in the low to medium power range. At the same time, these devices often serve as compressor in Vapor-Compression Refrigeration Systems. In both cases, the application of Computation Fluid Dynamics (CFD) to optimize such machines has become an integrated tool in the design process. As a consequence, several challenges associated with the numerical simulation have to be taken into account. For example, the modeling of the gap represents a challenge for the stability of the numerical analysis. The dynamic of the process, combined with deformations of the clearances and of the working chamber has to be considered with extra care. To raise the efficiency of the machine, oil is typically injected. Its numerical modeling imply an extra challenge in the simulation of the actual operation of the machine. The present work is mainly focused on the multi-phase nature of the flow, with a particular analysis of the lubricant oil injected. In this work, a two-lobe Roots blower operated as expander has been simulated with the open-source software OpenFOAM-v1812, using the SCORG-V5.2.2. This analysis highlights the areas that are affected the most by the oil presence in order to highlight the sealing effect it provides
Nanodot-Cavity Electrodynamics and Photon Entanglement
Quantum electrodynamics of excitons in a cavity is shown to be relevant to
quantum operations. We present a theory of an integrable solid-state quantum
controlled-phase gate for generating entanglement of two photons using a
coupled nanodot-microcavity-fiber structure. A conditional phase shift of
is calculated to be the consequence of the giant optical
nonlinearity keyed by the excitons in the cavities. Structural design and
active control, such as electromagnetic induced transparency and pulse shaping,
optimize the quantum efficiency of the gate operation.Comment: 4 pages 3 figure
Theory of Umklapp-assisted recombination of bound excitons in Si:P
We present the calculations for the oscillator strength of the recombination
of excitons bound to phosphorous donors in silicon. We show that the direct
recombination of the bound exciton cannot account for the experimentally
measured oscillator strength of the no-phonon line. Instead, the recombination
process is assisted by an umklapp process of the donor electron state. We make
use of the empirical pseudopotential method to evaluate the Umklapp-assisted
recombination matrix element in second-order perturbation theory. Our result is
in excellent agreement with the experiment. We also present two methods to
improve the optical resolution of the optical detection of the spin state of a
single nucleus in silicon.Comment: 9 pages, 6 EPS figures, Revtex
Kondo Insulator: p-wave Bose Condensate of Excitons
In the Anderson lattice model for a mixed-valent system, the
hybridization can possess a -wave symmetry. The strongly-correlated
insulating phase in the mean-field approximation is shown to be a -wave Bose
condensate of excitons with a spontaneous lattice deformation. We study the
equilibrium and linear response properties across the insulator-metal
transition. Our theory supports the empirical correlation between the lattice
deformation and the magnetic susceptibility and predicts measurable ultrasonic
and high-frequency phonon behavior in mixed-valent semiconductors.Comment: 5 pages, 3 encapsulated PostScript figure
