Andreev bound states and tunneling characteristics of a non-centrosymmetric superconductor
The tunneling characteristics of planar junctions between a normal metal and
a non-centrosymmetric superconductor like CePt3Si are examined. It is shown
that the superconducting phase with mixed parity can give rise to
characteristic zero-bias anomalies in certain junction directions. The origin
of these zero-bias anomalies are Andreev bound states at the interface. The
tunneling characteristics for different directions allow to test the structure
of the parity-mixed pairing state.Comment: 4 pages, 3 figure
Observation of local atomic displacements intrinsic to the double zigzag chain structure of 1T-MTe2 (M = V, Nb, Ta)
We describe the existence of local distortion discovered in the synchrotron
x-ray single-crystal structure analysis of layered ditelluride 1T-MTe2 (M = V,
Nb, Ta). In 1T-TaTe2, the double zigzag chain structure of Ta is deformed at
about 170 K, and heptamer molecules are formed periodically at low
temperatures. We found that some of the Ta atoms that compose the double zigzag
chain structure appearing at high temperatures are locally displaced, resulting
in local dimerization. This tendency weakens when Ta is replaced by V or Nb.
Our results indicate that the local distortion persistently survives in these
ditellurides, where the electronic degrees of freedom, including orbitals, are
weakened. We further discuss the origin of local distortion in these
ditellurides, which is different from many usual material systems where

Synchrotron Radiation XRD Analysis of Indialite in Y-82094 Ungrouped Carbonaceous Chondrite
Y-82094 is an ungrouped type 3.2 carbonaceous chondrite, with abundant chondrules making 78 vol.% of the rock. Among these chondrules, an unusual porphyritic Al-rich magnesian chondrule is reported that consists of a cordierite-like phase, Al-rich orthopyroxene, cristobalite, and spinel surrounded by an anorthitic mesostasis. The reported chemical formula of the cordierite-like phase is Na(0.19)Mg(1.95)Fe(0.02)Al(3.66)Si(5.19)O18, which is close to stoichiometric cordierite (Mg2Al3[AlSi5O18]). Although cordierite can be present in Al-rich chondrules, it has a high temperature polymorph (indialite) and it is therefore necessary to determine whether it is cordierite or indialite in order to better constrain its formation conditions. Order parameter oscillations in Fe/Ag/Bi2Sr2CaCu2O{8+delta} tunnel junctions
We have performed temperature dependent tunneling conductance spectroscopy on
Fe/Ag/Bi2Sr2CaCu2O8 (BSCCO) planar junctions. The multilayered Fe
counterelectrode was designed to probe the proximity region of the ab-plane of
BSCCO. The spectra manifested a coherent oscillatory behavior with magnitude
and sign dependent on the energy, decaying with increasing distance from the
junction barrier, in conjunction with the theoretical predictions involving
d-wave superconductors coupled with ferromagnets. The conductance oscillates in
antiphase at E = 0 and E = +/-Delta. Spectral features characteristic to a
broken time-reversal pairing symmetry are detected and they do not depend on
the geometrical characteristics of the ferromagnetic film.Comment: 4 pages and 4 figures Submitted to Physical Review Letter
Pressure suppression of the excitonic insulator state in Ta2NiSe5 observed by optical conductivity
The layered chalcogenide Ta2NiSe5 has recently attracted much interest as a strong candidate for a long-sought excitonic insulator (EI). Since the physical properties of an EI are expected to depend sensitively on the external pressure (P), it is important to clarify the P evolution of a microscopic electronic state in Ta2NiSe5. Here we report the optical conductivity [σ (ω)] of Ta2NiSe5 measured at high P to 10 GPa and at low temperatures to 8 K. With cooling at P = 0, σ (ω) develops an energy gap of about 0.17 eV and a pronounced excitonic peak at 0.38 eV as reported previously. With increasing P, the energy gap becomes narrower and the excitonic peak is diminished. Above a structural transition at Ps ≃ 3 GPa, the energy gap becomes partially filled, indicating that Ta2NiSe5 is a semimetal after the EI state is suppressed by P. At higher P, σ (ω) exhibits metallic characteristics with no energy gap. The detailed P evolution of the energy gap and σ (ω) is presented, and discussed mainly in terms of a weakening of excitonic correlation with P
Total synthesis and biological evaluation of the tetramic acid based natural product harzianic acid and its stereoisomers
Financial support for this project was provided by Cancer Research UK (Grant No. C21383/A6950)The bioactive natural product harzianic acid was prepared for the first time in just six steps (longest linear sequence) with an overall yield of 22%. The identification of conditions to telescope amide bond formation and a Lacey-Dieckmann reaction into one pot proved important. The three stereoisomers of harzianic acid were also prepared, providing material for comparison of their biological activity. While all of the isomers promoted root growth, improved antifungal activity was unexpectedly associated with isomers in the enantiomeric series opposite that of harzianic acid.Publisher PDFPeer reviewe
T helper cell subsets specific for pseudomonas aeruginosa in healthy individuals and patients with cystic fibrosis
Background: We set out to determine the magnitude of antigen-specific memory T helper cell responses to Pseudomonas aeruginosa in healthy humans and patients with cystic fibrosis.
Methods: Peripheral blood human memory CD4+ T cells were co-cultured with dendritic cells that had been infected with different strains of Pseudomonas aeruginosa. The T helper response was determined by measuring proliferation, immunoassay of cytokine output, and immunostaining of intracellular cytokines.
Results: Healthy individuals and patients with cystic fibrosis had robust antigen-specific memory CD4+ T cell responses to Pseudomonas aeruginosa that not only contained a Th1 and Th17 component but also Th22 cells. In contrast to previous descriptions of human Th22 cells, these Pseudomonal-specific Th22 cells lacked the skin homing markers CCR4 or CCR10, although were CCR6+. Healthy individuals and patients with cystic fibrosis had similar levels of Th22 cells, but the patient group had significantly fewer Th17 cells in peripheral blood.
Conclusions: Th22 cells specific to Pseudomonas aeruginosa are induced in both healthy individuals and patients with cystic fibrosis. Along with Th17 cells, they may play an important role in the pulmonary response to this microbe in patients with cystic fibrosis and other conditions
