Large-Scale Structures Behind the Milky Way from Near-IR Surveys
About 25% of the optical extragalactic sky is obscured by the dust and stars
of our Milky Way. Dynamically important structures might still lie hidden in
this zone. Various approaches are presently being employed to uncover the
galaxy distribution in the Zone of Avoidance (ZOA) but all suffer from
(different) limitations and selection effects.
We investigated the potential of using the DENIS NIR survey for studies of
galaxies behind the obscuration layer of our Milky Way and for mapping the
Galactic extinction. As a pilot study, we recovered DENIS I, J and K band
images of heavily obscured but optically still visible galaxies. We determined
the I, J and K band luminosity functions of galaxies on three DENIS strips that
cross the center of the nearby, low-latitude, rich cluster Abell 3627. The
extinction-corrected I-J and J-K colours of these cluster galaxies compare well
with that of an unobscured cluster. We searched for and identified galaxies at
latitudes where the Milky Way remains fully opaque (|b|
4-5mag) - in a systematic search as well as around positions of galaxies
detected with the blind HI survey of the ZOA currently conducted with the

Multiplicity of fibronectin-binding alpha V integrin receptors in colorectal cancer.
Current data from in vitro and in vivo animal models indicate that fibronectin-binding integrin receptors expressed by colon cancer cells may regulate tumour growth. While individual members of the beta 1 subfamily of integrins have now been clearly identified in colorectal cancer, little information exists with respect to the alpha V subfamily. In the present study we show that alpha V can associate with multiple and different beta subunits capable of binding fibronectin in this tumour type. This is likely to have functional implications for growth and spread of colorectal cancer
Magnetic shape-memory effects in La2-xSrxCuO4 crystals
The magnetic field affects the motion of electrons and the orientation of
spins in solids, but it is believed to have little impact on the crystal
structure. This common perception has been challenged recently by ferromagnetic
shape-memory alloys, where the spin-lattice coupling is so strong that
crystallographic axes even in a fixed sample are forced to rotate, following
the direction of moments. One would, however, least expect any structural
change to be induced in antiferromagnets where spins are antiparallel and give
no net moment. Here we report on such unexpected magnetic shape-memory effects
that take place ironically in one of the best-studied 2D antiferromagnets,
La2-xSrxCuO4 (LSCO). We find that lightly-doped LSCO crystals tend to align
their b axis along the magnetic field, and if the crystal orientation is fixed,
this alignment occurs through the generation and motion of crystallographic
twin boundaries. Both resistivity and magnetic susceptibility exhibit curious
switching and memory effects induced by the crystal-axes rotation; moreover,
clear kinks moving over the crystal surfaces allow one to watch the crystal
rearrangement directly with a microscope or even bare eyes.Comment: 3 pages, 4 figures; shortend version of this paper has been published

Anveshak - A Groundtruth Generation Tool for Foreground Regions of Document Images
We propose a graphical user interface based groundtruth generation tool in
this paper. Here, annotation of an input document image is done based on the
foreground pixels. Foreground pixels are grouped together with user interaction
to form labeling units. These units are then labeled by the user with the user
defined labels. The output produced by the tool is an image with an XML file
containing its metadata information. This annotated data can be further used in

Small bowel malignant melanoma presenting as a perforated jejunal diverticulum: a case report and literature review.
Although usually harmless and asymptomatic, jejuno-ileal diverticulae are associated with various non-specific gastrointestinal symptoms, and rarely cause surgical emergencies. This case report describes the presentation and management of a patient with an acute abdomen, whose jejunal diverticulum was perforated. Unexpectedly, histopathological assessment demonstrated malignant melanoma lining the diverticulum. Whether this was primary or metastatic is discussed, together with a synopsis of the literature on small bowel diverticulae
Predictive feedback control and Fitts' law
Fitts’ law is a well established empirical formula, known for encapsulating the “speed-accuracy trade-off”. For discrete, manual movements from a starting location to a target, Fitts’ law relates movement duration to the distance moved and target size. The widespread empirical success of the formula is suggestive of underlying principles of human movement control. There have been previous attempts to relate Fitts’ law to engineering-type control hypotheses and it has been shown that the law is exactly consistent with the closed-loop step-response of a time-delayed, first-order system. Assuming only the operation of closed-loop feedback, either continuous or intermittent, this paper asks whether such feedback should be predictive or not predictive to be consistent with Fitts law. Since Fitts’ law is equivalent to a time delay separated from a first-order system, known control theory implies that the controller must be predictive. A predictive controller moves the time-delay outside the feedback loop such that the closed-loop response can be separated into a time delay and rational function whereas a non- predictive controller retains a state delay within feedback loop which is not consistent with Fitts’ law. Using sufficient parameters, a high-order non-predictive controller could approximately reproduce Fitts’ law. However, such high-order, “non-parametric” controllers are essentially empirical in nature, without physical meaning, and therefore are conceptually inferior to the predictive controller. It is a new insight that using closed-loop feedback, prediction is required to physically explain Fitts’ law. The implication is that prediction is an inherent part of the “speed-accuracy trade-off”
Holographic Screening Length in a Hot Plasma of Two Sphere
We study the screening length of a quark-antiquark pair moving in a hot
plasma living in two sphere manifold using AdS/CFT correspondence where
the background metric is four dimensional Schwarzschild-AdS black hole. The
geodesic solution of the string ends at the boundary is given by a stationary
motion in the equatorial plane as such the separation length of
quark-antiquark pair is parallel to the angular velocity . The
screening length and the bound energy are computed numerically using
Mathematica. We find that the plots are bounded from below by some functions
related to the momentum transfer of the drag force configuration. We
compare the result by computing the screening length in the quark-antiquark
reference frame where the gravity dual are "Boost-AdS" and Kerr-AdS black
holes. Finding relations of the parameters of both black holes, we argue that
the relation between mass parameters of the Schwarzschild-AdS black
hole and of the Kerr-AdS black hole in high temperature is given by
, where is the angular momentum

Keyword-Based Delegable Proofs of Storage
Cloud users (clients) with limited storage capacity at their end can
outsource bulk data to the cloud storage server. A client can later access her
data by downloading the required data files. However, a large fraction of the
data files the client outsources to the server is often archival in nature that
the client uses for backup purposes and accesses less frequently. An untrusted
server can thus delete some of these archival data files in order to save some
space (and allocate the same to other clients) without being detected by the
client (data owner). Proofs of storage enable the client to audit her data
files uploaded to the server in order to ensure the integrity of those files.
In this work, we introduce one type of (selective) proofs of storage that we
call keyword-based delegable proofs of storage, where the client wants to audit
all her data files containing a specific keyword (e.g., "important"). Moreover,
it satisfies the notion of public verifiability where the client can delegate
the auditing task to a third-party auditor who audits the set of files
corresponding to the keyword on behalf of the client. We formally define the
security of a keyword-based delegable proof-of-storage protocol. We construct
such a protocol based on an existing proof-of-storage scheme and analyze the
security of our protocol. We argue that the techniques we use can be applied
atop any existing publicly verifiable proof-of-storage scheme for static data.

From Matrices to Strings and Back
We discuss an explicit construction of a string dual for the Gaussian matrix
model. Starting from the matrix model and employing Strebel differential
techniques we deduce hints about the structure of the dual string. Next,
following these hints a worldheet theory is constructed. The correlators in
this string theory are assumed to localize on a finite set of points in the
moduli space of Riemann surfaces. To each such point one associates a Feynman
diagram contributing to the correlator in the dual matrix model, and thus
recasts the worldsheet expression as a sum over Feynman diagrams.Comment: 27 pages, 3 figure
