The Energy of a Plasma in the Classical Limit
When \lambda_{T} << d_{T}, where \lambda_{T} is the de Broglie wavelength and
d_{T}, the distance of closest approach of thermal electrons, a classical
analysis of the energy of a plasma can be made. In all the classical analysis
made until now, it was assumed that the frequency of the fluctuations \omega <<
T (k_{B}=\hbar=1). Using the fluctuation-dissipation theorem, we evaluate the
energy of a plasma, allowing the frequency of the fluctuations to be arbitrary.
We find that the energy density is appreciably larger than previously thought
for many interesting plasmas, such as the plasma of the Universe before the

Effects of early intervention and the moderating effects of brain activity on institutionalized children's social skills at age 8
The present study examined the social skills of previously institutionalized, 8-y-old Romanian children from the Bucharest Early Intervention Project and the influence of attachment security and brain electrical activity (alpha power) on these skills. Participants included children randomized to an intervention involving foster care [Foster Care Group (FCG)], children randomized to remain in institutions [Care As Usual Group (CAUG)], and never-institutionalized children living with their families in the Bucharest community [Never-Institutionalized Group (NIG)]. A continuous rating of children's attachment security to their primary caregiver was assessed at 42 mo of age. When children were 8 y old, teachers rated their social skills, and the children's resting electroencephalogram alpha power was recorded. Teachers rated social skills of FCG children who were placed into foster care before 20 mo of age as no different from NIG children, and both of these groups were higher than CAUG children and FCG children placed after 20 mo. Electroencephalogram alpha power at age 8 significantly moderated the relations between attachment security and social skills. These findings characterize institutionalized children's social skills in middle childhood within the context of a randomized intervention while highlighting the roles of both relational and biological factors in these developmental trajectories

Strangers in the night: Discovery of a dwarf spheroidal galaxy on its first Local Group infall
We present spectroscopic observations of the AndXII dwarf spheroidal galaxy
using DEIMOS/Keck-II, showing it to be moving rapidly through the Local Group
(-556 km/s heliocentric velocity, -281 km/s relative to Andromeda from the MW),
falling into the Local Group from ~115 kpc beyond Andromeda's nucleus. AndXII
therefore represents a dwarf galaxy plausibly falling into the Local Group for
the first time, and never having experienced a dense galactic environment. From
Green Bank Telescope observations, a limit on the H{I} gas mass of <3000 Msun
suggests that AndXII's gas could have been removed prior to experiencing the
tides of the Local Group galaxies. Orbit models suggest the dwarf is close to
the escape velocity of M31 for published mass models. AndXII is our best direct
evidence for the late infall of satellite galaxies, a prediction of

The stellar populations of the bluest low surface brightness galaxies
Using optical/near-IR broadband photometry together with Halpha emission line
data, we attempt to constrain the star formation histories, ages, total stellar
masses and stellar mass-to-light ratios for a sample of extremely blue low
surface brightness galaxies. We find that, under standard assumptions about the
stellar initial mass function, the Halpha equivalent widths of these objects
appear inconsistent with recently suggested scenarios including constant or
increasing star formation rates over cosmological time scales. In a critical
assessment of the prospects of obtaining ages from integrated broadband
photometry, we conclude that even with near-IR data, the ages are poorly
constrained and that current observations cannot rule out the possibility that
these objects formed as recently as 1-2 Gyr ago. Methods which could
potentially improve the age estimates are discussed. The stellar masses of
these galaxies are inferred to lie below 10^10 solar masses. This, in
combination with low ages, could constitute a problem for current hierarchical
models of galaxy formation, which predict objects of this mass to form
predominantly early in the history of the universe. The possibility to use the
ages of the bluest low surface brightness galaxies as a test of such models is
