    Silt curtains - a review of their role in dredging projects

    As environmental mitigation associated with dredging and marine construction activities becomes ever more a focus of attention, the use of silt curtains to contain fine material locally to the dredging operation has increased. A silt curtain is typically simple in design, comprising of a geo-textile sheet attached to floats that are weighed down to the sea floor and anchored in place. The expected result is to prevent the transport of sediment out of the work site and into the surrounding environment. However, few documents exist that consolidate the current understanding of the use of curtains and the controlling factors associated with the deployment of them, including consideration of their purpose, design, development and limitations. A cynic’s view is that silt curtains are often installed to comply with regulatory constraints and may offer limited practical value, especially when they are left unmaintained. Poor understanding of silt curtain design and limitations often means they are installed in unsuitable environments, resulting in unsatisfactory performance. Critically, once a curtain is installed; without good management and regular maintenance, the geo-textile will often perish leading to a significant reduction in its effectiveness. Different installation methods exist along with multiple configurations; consideration of the environmental conditions should be made prior to the design and installation of a silt curtain.     Children’s Use of Comparative Text Signals: The Relationship between Age and Comprehension Ability

    In this study we examined age differences in children and young adolescents’ use of comparative text signals in order to gain insights into the development of signaling knowledge. We predicted that differential patterns of age differences would be found for readers classified as having low, middle, and high comprehension ability, and that the middle group of comprehenders would have the greatest amount of variability with age. 4th-, 6th-, and 9th-grade readers’ use of words employed to mark comparative relationships were compared by means of an open cloze. Results from analyses of competency of use scores, indicated that readers in the middle comprehension group had a larger number of significant increases in competency with age. Fewer age differences in overall competency were found for readers in low and high comprehension groups. Analysis of individual signals indicated that patterns of age differences may also vary in relation to the particular signal being processed. The findings from this study suggest that readers’ overall comprehension ability may influence the acquisition and use of text signals

    The study of nearest- and next-nearest-neighbour magnetic interactions in seven tetragonal compounds V(IV) containing linear chains and square lattices

    A new crystal chemical method was used to calculate the sign and strength not only of the nearest-neighbor (NN)interactions, but also of the next-nearest-neighbor (NNN) ones in tetragonal compounds Zn2(VO)(PO4)2 (I),(VO)(H2PO4)2 (II), (VO)SiP2O8 (III), (VO)SO4 (IV), (VO)MoO4 (V), Li2(VO)SiO4 (VI) and Li2(VO)GeO4 (VII) with similar sublattices of V4+ ions on the basis of the room-temperature structural data. The reason for difference between respective magnetic interactions characteristics of these compounds was established. It is shown that the characteristic feature of these compounds is a strong dependence of the strength of magnetic interactions and the magnetic moments ordering type on slight displacements of XO4 (X = P, Mo, Si or Ge) groups even without change of the crystal symmetry. In addition to extensively studied square lattice, other specific geometrical configurations of V4+ were discovered. These configurations can result in frustration of magnetic interactions, namely linear chains along the c-axis with competing nearest- and next-to-nearest-neighbor interactions; rectangular (in I) and triangular (in II-VII) lattices with non-equivalent nearest-to-neighbor interactions, which can be also considered as n-leg ladders; one extra square lattice in the ab-plane with longer range interactions.     Access to energy is being severely restricted by the cost of living crisis, with almost a quarter of households experiencing fuel poverty, despite existing interventions. Here we draw on a large body of evidence on fuel poverty to summarise likely effects on households this winter. We find there is urgent need for further bill support, energy efficiency and targeted advice for vulnerable households

    In Vitro Oxidative Crosslinking of Recombinant Barnacle Cyprid Cement Gland Proteins

    Barnacle adhesion is a focus for fouling-control technologies as well as the development of bioinspired adhesives, although the mechanisms remain very poorly understood. The barnacle cypris larva is responsible for surface colonisation. Cyprids release cement from paired glands that contain proteins, carbohydrates and lipids, although further compositional details are scant. Several genes coding for cement gland-specific proteins were identified, but only one of these showed database homology. This was a lysyl oxidase-like protein (lcp_LOX). LOX-like enzymes have been previously identified in the proteome of adult barnacle cement secretory tissue. We attempted to produce recombinant LOX in E. coli, in order to identify its role in cyprid cement polymerisation. We also produced two other cement gland proteins (lcp3_36k_3B8 and lcp2_57k_2F5). lcp2_57k_2F5 contained 56 lysine residues and constituted a plausible substrate for LOX. While significant quantities of soluble lcp3_36k_3B8 and lcp2_57k_2F5 were produced in E. coli, production of stably soluble lcp_LOX failed. A commercially sourced human LOX catalysed the crosslinking of lcp2_57k_2F5 into putative dimers and trimers, and this reaction was inhibited by lcp3_36k_3B8. Inhibition of the lcp_LOX:lcp2_57k_2F5 reaction by lcp3_36k_3B8 appeared to be substrate specific, with no inhibitory effect on the oxidation of cadaverine by LOX. The results demonstrate a possible curing mechanism for barnacle cyprid cement and, thus, provide a basis for a more complete understanding of larval adhesion for targeted control of marine biofouling and adhesives for niche applications

    Energy and symmetry of dddd excitations in undoped layered cuprates measured by Cu L3L_3 resonant inelastic x-ray scattering

    We measured high resolution Cu L3L_3 edge resonant inelastic x-ray scattering (RIXS) of the undoped cuprates La2_2CuO4_4, Sr2_2CuO2_2Cl2_2, CaCuO2_2 and NdBa2_2Cu3_3O6_6. The dominant spectral features were assigned to dddd excitations and we extensively studied their polarization and scattering geometry dependence. In a pure ionic picture, we calculated the theoretical cross sections for those excitations and used them to fit the experimental data with excellent agreement. By doing so, we were able to determine the energy and symmetry of Cu-3dd states for the four systems with unprecedented accuracy and confidence. The values of the effective parameters could be obtained for the single ion crystal field model but not for a simple two-dimensional cluster model. The firm experimental assessment of dddd excitation energies carries important consequences for the physics of high TcT_c superconductors. On one hand, having found that the minimum energy of orbital excitation is always ≥1.4\geq 1.4 eV, i.e., well above the mid-infrared spectral range, leaves to magnetic excitations (up to 300 meV) a major role in Cooper pairing in cuprates. On the other hand, it has become possible to study quantitatively the effective influence of dddd excitations on the superconducting gap in cuprates.Comment: 22 pages, 11 figures, 1 tabl

    In Vivo Regulation of Glycogen Synthase Kinase-3β (GSK3β) by Serotonergic Activity in Mouse Brain

    The goal of this study was to determine if serotonergic activity, which is impaired in depression, regulates the phosphorylation of glycogen synthase kinase-3β (GSK3β) in mouse brain in vivo. GSK3β is inhibited by phosphorylation on serine-9 and is a target of the mood stabilizer lithium. Following administration to mice of d-fenfluramine to stimulate serotonin (5HT) release and reduce its reuptake, and clorgyline to inhibit 5HT catabolism, levels of phospho-Ser9-GSK3β were 300–400% of control levels in the prefrontal cortex, hippocampus, and striatum. Treatment with monoamine reuptake inhibitors fluoxetine and imipramine also increased the level of phospho-Ser9-GSK3β. Using receptor selective agonists and antagonists, 5HT1A receptors were found to mediate increases, and 5HT2 receptors decreases, in phospho-Ser9-GSK3β levels. This indicates that serotonergic regulation of the phosphorylation of GSK3β is achieved by a balance between the opposing actions of these 5HT receptor subtypes. These findings demonstrate for the first time that serotonergic activity regulates the phosphorylation of GSK3β and show that this regulation occurs in mammalian brain in vivo. These results raise the possibility that impaired inhibitory control of GSK3β may occur in conditions where serotonergic activity is dysregulated, such as in mood disorders

    Foreign policy beliefs and support for Stephen Harper and the Conservative Party

    Similar to other recent Canadian elections, foreign policy did not feature prominently in the 2011 federal election campaign. In fact, many doubt Canadian public opinion on international affairs is linked to the actions taken by recent Governments. In this paper, we examine Canadian public opinion toward a range of foreign policy issues and argue that the survey questions measure two latent dimensions —militarism and internationalism. Our survey evidence indicates the existence of an “issue public” which is prepared to endorse military action and is skeptical of human rights and overseas aid programs, and this group is far more supportive of Prime Minister Harper and the Conservative Party than other Canadians. The absence of an elite discussion, either among politicians or between media elites, about the direction of Canadian foreign policy does not prevent the Canadian voter from thinking coherently about questions pertaining to this issue domain and employing these beliefs to support or oppose political parties and their leaders

The diversity of metabotropic 5-HT receptors is increased by alternative splicing that produces isoforms of the 5-HT2A (non-functional), 5-HT2C (non-functional), 5-HT4, 5-HT6 (non-functional) and 5-HT7 receptors. Unique amongst the GPCRs, RNA editing produces 5-HT2C receptor isoforms that differ in function, such as efficiency and specificity of coupling to Gq/11 and also pharmacology [40, 482]. Most 5-HT receptors (except 5-ht1e and 5-ht5b) play specific roles mediating functional responses in different tissues (reviewed by [463, 382])
