    Surface composition of BaTiO3/SrTiO3(001) films grown by atomic oxygen plasma assisted molecular beam epitaxy

    We have investigated the growth of BaTiO3 thin films deposited on pure and 1% Nb-doped SrTiO3(001) single crystals using atomic oxygen assisted molecular beam epitaxy (AO-MBE) and dedicated Ba and Ti Knudsen cells. Thicknesses up to 30 nm were investigated for various layer compositions. We demonstrate 2D growth and epitaxial single crystalline BaTiO3 layers up to 10 nm before additional 3D features appear; lattice parameter relaxation occurs during the first few nanometers and is completed at {\guillemotright}10 nm. The presence of a Ba oxide rich top layer that probably favors 2D growth is evidenced for well crystallized layers. We show that the Ba oxide rich top layer can be removed by chemical etching. The present work stresses the importance of stoichiometry and surface composition of BaTiO3 layers, especially in view of their integration in devices.Comment: In press in J. Appl. Phy

    Mortality and Morbidity Following Endovascular Repair of Abdominal Aortic Aneurysms: Analysis of Two Single Centre Experiences

    AbstractObjective to show how differences in anatomical and physiological risk factors can affect the outcome of endovascular repair of AAA by describing the experience of two centres with different selection policies. Methods one hundred and thirty-five patients (group I) were treated at Queen's Medical Centre (Nottingham, U.K.) using 101 in-house made and 34 manufactured stent-grafts. Median diameter, length and angulation of the proximal aneurysm neck were 26 mm, 27 mm, 40°, respectively. Seventy-six patients had ischaemic heart disease, 47 had left ventricular failure, median forced expiratory volume in one second (FEV1) was 83%, median creatinine was 100 μmol/l and median age was 72 years. Fifty patients (group II) were treated at Timone Hospital (Marseilles, France) using seven in-house made and 43 manufactured stent-grafts. Median diameter, length and angulation of the proximal aneurysm neck were 25 mm, 34 mm, 33°, respectively. Thirteen patients had ischaemic heart disease, two had left ventricular failure, median forced expiratory volume in one second was 101%, median creatinine was 108 μmol/l and mean age was 72 years. Results anatomical characteristics of the proximal neck were significantly worse in group I (p=0.02 for the three variables). Cardiac comorbidities were more frequent and mean FEV1 was lower in group I (p<0.0001 and p=0.001, respectively. Median aneurysm diameter was significantly greater in group I (65 mm) than in group II (53 mm) (p<0.001). Postoperative mortality was 9% and 0% in groups I and II respectively (p=0.03). The incidence of technical complications (groin wound complications and side branches endoleaks being excluded) was 20% and 0% in groups I and II, respectively (p=0.0006). Conclusion postoperative mortality and technical complication rates were significantly greater in group I than in group II, readily explained by poorer general condition and worse anatomical characteristics of the proximal neck in group I

    Determination of the cation site distribution of the spinel in multiferroic CoFe2O4 / BaTiO3 layers by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy

    International audienceThe properties of CoFe2O4/BaTiO3 artificial multiferroic multilayers strongly depend on the crystalline structure, the stoichiometry and the cation distribution between octahedral (Oh) and tetrahedral (Td) sites (inversion factor). In the present study, we have investigated epitaxial CoFe2O4 layers grown on BaTiO3, with different Co/Fe ratios. We determined the cation distribution in our samples by X-ray magnetic circular dichroism (XMCD), a well accepted method to do so, and by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), using a fitting method based on physical considerations. We observed that our XPS approach converged on results consistent with XMCD measurements made on the same samples. Thus, within a careful decomposition based on individual chemical environments it is shown that XPS is fully able to determine the actual inversion factor

Recent advance in biological knowledge introduced two different methodological approaches of delivering growth factors and stem cells into the articular environment. Platelet-Rich Plasma and Mesenchimal Stem Cells are supposed to change the way to approach early knee osteoarthritis and chondral lesions, though their indications and limits are yet to be determined

    Homocysteine metabolism pathway is involved in the control of glucose homeostasis: a cystathionine beta synthase deficiency study in mouse

    Cystathionine beta synthase (CBS) catalyzes the first step of the transsulfuration pathway from homocysteine to cystathionine, and its deficiency leads to hyperhomocysteinemia (HHcy) in humans and rodents. To date, scarce information is available about the HHcy effect on insulin secretion, and the link between CBS activity and the setting of type 2 diabetes is still unknown. We aimed to decipher the consequences of an inborn defect in CBS on glucose homeostasis in mice. We used a mouse model heterozygous for CBS (CBS+/-) that presented a mild HHcy. Other groups were supplemented with methionine in drinking water to increase the mild to intermediate HHcy, and were submitted to a high-fat diet (HFD). We measured the food intake, body weight gain, body composition, glucose homeostasis, plasma homocysteine level, and CBS activity. We evidenced a defect in the stimulated insulin secretion in CBS+/- mice with mild and intermediate HHcy, while mice with intermediate HHcy under HFD presented an improvement in insulin sensitivity that compensated for the decreased insulin secretion and permitted them to maintain a glucose tolerance similar to the CBS+/+ mice. Islets isolated from CBS+/- mice maintained their ability to respond to the elevated glucose levels, and we showed that a lower parasympathetic tone could, at least in part, be responsible for the insulin secretion defect. Our results emphasize the important role of Hcy metabolic enzymes in insulin secretion and overall glucose homeostasis

    Differences in allergen-induced T cell activation between allergic asthma and rhinitis: Role of CD28, ICOS and CTLA-4

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Th2 cell activation and T regulatory cell (Treg) deficiency are key features of allergy. This applies for asthma and rhinitis. However with a same atopic background, some patients will develop rhinitis and asthma, whereas others will display rhinitis only. Co-receptors are pivotal in determining the type of T cell activation, but their role in allergic asthma and rhinitis has not been explored. Our objective was to assess whether allergen-induced T cell activation differs from allergic rhinitis to allergic rhinitis with asthma, and explore the role of ICOS, CD28 and CTLA-4.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>T cell co-receptor and cytokine expressions were assessed by flow cytometry in PBMC from 18 house dust mite (HDM) allergic rhinitics (R), 18 HDM allergic rhinitics and asthmatics (AR), 13 non allergic asthmatics (A) and 20 controls, with or without anti-co-receptors antibodies.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>In asthmatics (A+AR), a constitutive decrease of CTLA-4+ and of CD4+CD25+Foxp3+ cells was found, with an increase of IFN-γ+ cells. In allergic subjects (R + AR), allergen stimulation induced CD28 together with IL-4 and IL-13, and decreased the proportion of CTLA-4+, IL-10+ and CD4+CD25+Foxp3+ cells. Anti-ICOS and anti-CD28 antibodies blocked allergen-induced IL-4 and IL-13. IL-13 production also involved CTLA-4.</p> <p>Conclusions</p> <p>T cell activation differs between allergic rhinitis and asthma. In asthma, a constitutive, co-receptor independent, Th1 activation and Treg deficiency is found. In allergic rhinitis, an allergen-induced Treg cell deficiency is seen, as well as an ICOS-, CD28- and CTLA-4-dependent Th2 activation. Allergic asthmatics display both characteristics.</p
