Reducing Stigma toward the Transgender Community: An Evaluation of a Humanizing and Perspective-Taking Intervention
Transgender (TG) individuals are an understudied group at high risk of experiencing discrimination and associated adverse mental health outcomes (IOM, 2011). Although many studies demonstrate that contact reduces negative attitudes toward out-groups, few studies have examined the link between contact and attitudes toward the TG community (Hill & Willoughby, 2005; Walchet al., 2012). This study represents one of the first attempts to understand how to effectively reduce stigma toward the TG community. Results indicate that education alone is not enough to change attitudes; in fact, there is some evidence that associating transgenderism with psychopathology may heighten stigma. Consistent with prior research on stigma towards the mentally ill, the current study suggests that both exposure to intimate media depictions of the âotherâ (Reinke et al., 2004) and perspective-taking (Mann & Himelein, 2008) could strengthen educational campaigns designed to combat stigma
Ternary content addressable memory for longest prefix matching based on random access memory on field programmable gate array
Conventional ternary content addressable memory (TCAM) provides access to stored data, which consists of '0', '1' and âdon't careâ, and outputs the matched address. Content lookup in TCAM can be done in a single cycle, which makes it very important in applications such as address lookup and deep-packet inspection. This paper proposes an improved TCAM architecture with fast update functionality. To support longest prefix matching (LPM), LPM logic are needed to the proposed TCAM. The latency of the proposed LPM logic is dependent on the number of matching addresses in address prefix comparison. In order to improve the throughput, parallel LPM logic is added to improve the throughput by 10Ă compared to the one without. Although with resource overhead, the cost of throughput per bit is less as compared to the one without parallel LPM logic
Cellular Ability to Sense Spatial Gradients in the Presence of Multiple Competitive Ligands
Many eukaryotic and prokaryotic cells can exhibit remarkable sensing ability
under small gradient of chemical compound. In this study, we approach this
phenomenon by considering the contribution of multiple ligands to the chemical
kinetics within Michaelis-Menten model. This work was inspired by the recent
theoretical findings from Bo Hu et al. [Phys. Rev. Lett. 105, 048104 (2010)],
our treatment with practical binding energies and chemical potential provides

Quantum Chinos Game: winning strategies through quantum fluctuations
We apply several quantization schemes to simple versions of the Chinos game.
Classically, for two players with one coin each, there is a symmetric stable
strategy that allows each player to win half of the times on average. A partial
quantization of the game (semiclassical) allows us to find a winning strategy
for the second player, but it is unstable w.r.t. the classical strategy.
However, in a fully quantum version of the game we find a winning strategy for
the first player that is optimal: the symmetric classical situation is broken

Dietary dairy product intake and incident type 2 diabetes: a prospective study using dietary data from a 7-day food diary
The consumption of specific dairy types may be beneficial for the prevention of diabetes.
Abstract: The aim of this study was to investigate the association between total and types of dairy product intake and risk of developing incident type 2 diabetes, using a food diary.
Methods: A nested case-cohort within the EPIC-Norfolk Study was examined, including a random subcohort
(n=4,000) and cases of incident diabetes (n=892, including 143 cases in the subcohort) followed-up for 11 years. Diet was assessed using a prospective 7-day food diary. Total dairy intake (g/day) was estimated and categorised into high-fat
(â„3.9%) and low-fat (<3.9% fat) dairy, and by subtype into yoghurt, cheese and milk. Combined fermented dairy product
intake (yoghurt, cheese, sour cream) was estimated and categorised into high- and low-fat. Prentice-weighted Cox
regression HRs were calculated.
Results: Total dairy, high-fat dairy, milk, cheese and high-fat fermented dairy product intakes were not associated with the
development of incident diabetes. Low-fat dairy intake was inversely associated with diabetes in age- and sex-adjusted
analyses (tertile [T] 3 vs T1, HR 0.81 [95% CI 0.66, 0.98]), but further adjustment for anthropometric, dietary and diabetes
risk factors attenuated this association. In addition, an inverse association was found between diabetes and low-fat
fermented dairy product intake (T3 vs T1, HR 0.76 [95% CI 0.60, 0.99]; ptrend=0.049) and specifically with yoghurt intake
(HR 0.72 [95% CI 0.55, 0.95]; ptrend=0.017) in multivariable adjusted analyses.
Conclusions/interpretation: Greater low-fat fermented dairy product intake, largely driven by yoghurt intake, was associated with a decreased risk of type 2 diabetes development in prospective analyses. These findings suggest that the consumption of specific dairy types may be beneficial for the prevention of diabetes, highlighting the importance of food
group subtypes for public health messages
Optimal purification of thermal graph states
In this paper, a purification protocol is presented and its performance is
proven to be optimal when applied to a particular subset of graph states that
are subject to local Z-noise. Such mixed states can be produced by bringing a
system into thermal equilibrium, when it is described by a Hamiltonian which
has a particular graph state as its unique ground state. From this protocol, we
derive the exact value of the critical temperature above which purification is
impossible, as well as the related optimal purification rates. A possible
simulation of graph Hamiltonians is proposed, which requires only bipartite
interactions and local magnetic fields, enabling the tuning of the system

Spectropolarimetry of the Luminous Narrow-Line Seyfert Galaxies IRAS 20181-2244 and IRAS 13224-3809
We observed the narrow-line Seyfert 1 galaxies IRAS 20181-2244 and IRAS
13324-3809 with a new spectropolarimeter on the RC spectrograph at the CTIO 4m
telescope. Previously it had been suggested that IRAS 20181-2244 was a Type 2
QSO and thus might contain an obscured broad-line region which could be
detected by the presence of broad Balmer lines in the polarized flux. We found
the object to be polarized at about 2%, and constant with wavelength, (unlike
most narrow-line Seyfert 1s), but with no evidence of broad Balmer lines in
polarized flux. The spectropolarimetry indicates that the scattering material
is inside the BLR. IRAS 13224-3809, notable for its high variability in X-ray
and UV wavelengths, has a low polarization consistent with a Galactic

One-way quantum computing in a decoherence-free subspace
We introduce a novel scheme for one-way quantum computing (QC) based on the
use of information encoded qubits in an effective cluster state resource. With
the correct encoding structure, we show that it is possible to protect the
entangled resource from phase damping decoherence, where the effective cluster
state can be described as residing in a Decoherence-Free Subspace (DFS) of its
supporting quantum system. One-way QC then requires either single or two-qubit
adaptive measurements. As an example where this proposal can be realized, we
describe an optical lattice setup where the scheme provides robust quantum
information processing. We also outline how one can adapt the model to provide
